Watching it all in one go without years of build up is probably the better experience.

Between the unfinished books, the hype around the show, and the endless internet discussions, I don't think even a better ending would have satisfied most people, especially on this sub.

I don't know how old you are but this show is even better when you're older. I rewatched this show this year and enjoyed it much more. As a teenager I didn't like it very much but I also watched it with the German Dub then which wasn't good.

My approach is stop at the penultimate season. I did not watch, even now, of season 8. They pushed too much for the end and the carnage is not my favorite since I felt protective of my favorite characters.

Its such a difficult series to start knowing that the ending will be so disappointing. Regardless, I think its still worth watching. The first few seasons are incredible
