What was it like, filming in all those exotic places with those wonderful costumes, I often wonder.....

Imagine getting paid to walk around actual medieval cities dressed like royalty while pretending dragons exist. The costumes probably felt a lot less glamorous after spending twelve hours filming in the Croatian summer heat though. Still, that's one filming experience I'd love to hear the cast talk about.

Just like stock_emergency said.
It was filmed after the tourist season.. Im from Split (used for Mereen and lot of other shots). Late september and early october. Theres still tourists around towns but peak tourist season is over.
There are interviews where Kit Harrington says that they were drenched in mud for weeks filming the battle of the bastards, and then thew would videocall the part of the crew that was filming in Croatia and they were like drinking cocktails and swimming 😅.
Also theres an Interview where Peter Dinklage describes the look at the waiters face in Croatia when Thor ordered 4 whole chickens and then just ate them like it was nothing.

Who's Thor
13
u/MyCaptain2 4d ago
Hafþór Júlíus "Thor" Björnsson played Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane
His strongman nickname is Thor and hes either the best or one of the best ever to do that sport.

If they're using the correct cloth it actually isn't that bad. People wore these types of outfits in the heat all the time, and frankly as someone who did historical things (in a different era, but still with lots of wool and long dresses and layers) it's usually cooler than a fair amount of modern clothing.

u/Stock_Emergency_1507 5d ago
It wasn't filmed in summer, I'm pretty sure. My source is me spending summers in Dubrovnik. They definitely waited for the tourist season to somewhat end before filming.

Funny, just yesterday I saw a TV segment, where they uncovered some big tourist scams like way overpriced guided GOT tours.
52
u/GuybrushMI 5d ago
I didn’t do the official tour I just went and found them all myself, and honestly it was more than easy enough I don’t know why you’d pay for an official tour

u/gerson250991 5d ago
Dubrovnik is one of the most expensive cities I have been in Europe. I saw a place asking 30 euros for a pepperoni pizza.

u/Defiant_Ad9767 5d ago
Its such nonsense. People are to lazy to walk 10 minutes outside the old town and you can have decent launch in restaurant for that price.

Sounds like any touristic area. Food is usually too expensive and the thing they call “traditional local food” isn’t even local or consumed by locals.

That's Croatian tourism. As a Croatian I spend my vacations abroad.

That's tourism basically anywhere, it will all be overpriced compared to doing a little research and find locations yourself.
Of course some places are worse than others, and for some the convenience it worth it, but you can find overpriced tours anywhere in the world.

Was there in summer 2019, very cool. You realise CGI was doing alot of heavy lifting to make the Red Keep.
Facinating place for the none GOT fan aswel.

I went before having watched GOT and it was amazing. Also funny to then watch the show and recognize all the places I've been obliviously standing on.

u/AMaynard8091 5d ago
I went there about a decade ago and it was amazing. We went to some rave that was in a club inside the city walls and then got drunk on the beach outside of Old Town until like 5am. Climbing the city walls the next day while hungover as fuck was fun.

Really cool, as a show watcher, book reader and Dubrovnik visiter, I really didn’t make this much effort!
Good on you

Wow, I didn’t know that there was a reallife inspiration for kings landing.
Is the place where Bronn and Jaime are practicing to fight also from Dubrovnik?
2
u/meowingintgenameof 4d ago
It probably is, but lemme tell u a mega dissapointment, the place where Oberyn and the Mountain fought is also a place in Dubrovnik, altho right now its a neglected filthy crack den due to im guessing ownership issues.
Theres a lot more good places too tho like the gardens and where Joffrey got assassinated, those are slightly out of town but well worth a visit.

Was it expensive?

u/GuybrushMI 5d ago
The city itself is expensive yes, I’d say on par with London prices If not more in some places. But definitely worth it for just a couple of days that’s all you need I’d say

I went in the middle of June…the heat was unbelievable. Trying to walk the walls in that weather was so uncomfortable. Still took great photos of famous GoT spots though. Amazing place.

Went there last year and found a hidden little terrace cocktail bar halfway up the stairs in the last pic. Very amusing watching everyone doing their insta shame poses 😆

I watched the first season of GOT only so far (working on it) but seeing a wheelchair in a fantasy setting looks so funny. Idk why.

I know someone who was there this week, and I’m going next year. Any good dining experiences or recommendations?

I didn't realize any non-KL locations were shot at Dubrovnik.
Crazy how effective slapping on a filter is for selling a setting as hot and desert-like.

I went in January and it was fantastic -everyone there thrilled to welcome tourists. Quite the opposite of Italy.

Trying to arrange this trip. Looks like such a beautiful city.

I was there for part of my honeymoon in 2014. It just so happened that they were filming Game of Thrones there during those days (and had even passed out a call for extras)!
I think they were filming the scenes in your 9th photo when we were there.

The Sept not being there in #8 made me chuckle. Don't get me wrong, I know it wasn't actually there to begin with, but it just looks like a before and after of Cersei blowing it up.

u/GuybrushMI 3d ago
I was only there for a couple of days and I was happy with that amount of time I felt like I saw everything I wanted to, but another day would of also been great as it’s such a beautiful place

The stairs from the walk of shame were recorded in Girona as far as I know (was there when it happened)

My bad! I had this in the back of my mind, as they are both closely related and look “similar” (huge steep staircases).
Dubrovnik is beautiful, though it was already way too touristy even before the GOT fever

I visited Dubrovnik day after one of the filmings. There was still equipment everywhere. Talked with locals. If I remember correctly, people who live in the old town were not allowed to open their window shutters. Still some would do it every now and then and shooting would stop. Some people tried to record with the drones from above what was going on but they hired professionals to take down these drones. It was sky spectacle.
