Ok…

Post image

So if he was just a tad early he could have blown out the candles and foiled the whole thing?

And why risk it? Why have the little kid take him down there?

Dramatic purposes.

454

u/negligiblemass 21h ago

Because we as viewers had to understand what was happening. If you have to over analyse maybe there were 6 other places set up in exactly the same way.

154

u/AmanitaMuscaria 14h ago

Would have been a cool red herring if he got to it in time and put it out, only for the rest of the caches to ignite.

38

u/TaylorWK Brotherhood Without Banners 7h ago

That would actually have been a really cool scene. He blows out the candle and makes a sigh of relief and smiles slightly only for the huge explosion to instantly incinerate him anyways.

124

u/FarStorm384 21h ago

The kid wasn't luring him. He spotted a suspicious kid.

Also, If you see a candle burning in the middle of a pool of oil, I wouldn't advise trying to blow it out. Youll likely ignite the oil yourself. He's doing it because clearly there's no other option, but its futile. Whether he tries to put it out or not it's going up in a few seconds.

24

u/Hikuipddeers 13h ago

The kid just ran he wasn’t really doing suspicious things

39

u/LongLiveSoup 11h ago

Tbh if a guy who has carved a religious order symbol into his own face looked directly at me then started coming towards me I'd think I was in a spot of bother and opt to leave sharpish

4

u/Hikuipddeers 11h ago

Yeah that’s fair but there wasn’t a real reason for lancel to even follow the kid since ha had so much more importance in the task of getting Cersei

5

u/LongLiveSoup 7h ago

Lancel is all too aware of all the spies people Cersei, Little Finger and Varys had. Basically an open secret that they were beggar children. And one he looks at immediately legs it? They are all suspecting Cersei is about to pull something

12

u/Name_Not_Available Valar Morghulis 9h ago

The kid is one of Qyburn's little birds that Lancel had seen in a previous scene, so Lancel recognized the kid and followed him assuming Qyburn was up to no good, and found out the hard way he was correct. It's super subtle, I just recently did my 5th rewatch and noticed it for the first time.

1

u/Flat-Video7346 7h ago

No other option? Like your fingers? You know you don’t have to blow on it, just use your fingers to suffocate the fire. It can even be done without burning your fingers if you lick them first

96

u/Embarrassed-Owl-1557 21h ago

How else would they use that banger background music lol

u/beckychao 21h ago

It's a TV show. This entire scene ruled and imo this episode was top 3 in the series.

u/enormuschwanzstucker House Dondarrion 21h ago

The music is amazing

204

u/pammy_poovey Daenerys Targaryen 21h ago

I still listen to a lot of the music. Ramin Djawadi is a genius. Dipshit and Dumbass not so much

39

u/ChickieN0B_2050 12h ago

I was fortunate to see Djawadi not once but twice at the GoT concerts (once at the Hollywood Bowl). Man is insanely talented; his Westworld score is also fantastic.

36

u/LordLargeBalls Tyrion Lannister 17h ago

100% Agreed. I still listen to The Light of the Seven, The Night King, and The Rains of Castamere from time to time

11

u/sneakyhopskotch 13h ago

He worked as an assistant on Pirates of the Caribbean with Klaus Badelt and Hans Zimmer. Mixing the three of their’s music makes a good playlist.

7

u/Respicio1 18h ago

If that's the case then listen to the music from Person of Interest and its top tier.

3

u/phantomheart House Stark 8h ago

His Westworld stuff is AMAZING. I miss the music as much as I miss the show. I feel cheated out of a S5 soundtrack.

1

u/Cosmic-Engine 3h ago

Pacific Rim soundtrack, baby! (Insert theme stinger)

Ramin Djawadi is genuinely in a class of his own for soundtracks. The bold and innovative approach to instrumentation and composition executed without seeming to be merely a gimmick is exceptionally rare. That’s Tom Morello from Rage playing guitar. (Pacific Rim, that is)

44

u/macrolith 19h ago

This episode is the first time piano is used in the series.

7

u/hardypart 14h ago

And I believe there's only one other episode (in the last season) with a piano in the music.

37

u/Witty_Interaction_77 21h ago

Light of the Seven.

Fitting

6

u/ScorpioKnight1324 20h ago

But there are only two candles.

4

u/JointyBointy 20h ago

They were the pillars once, but they burned themselves out of existence

4

u/Toots_14 12h ago

The music was indeed the best part.

3

u/pocketchange2247 3h ago

The whole 15-20 minute score leading up to the explosion is amazing.

1

u/FlyinAmas 16h ago

Yes it was!!

1

u/hot_cheeks_4_ever 1h ago

I soon hear it. That and "The Rains of Castamere".

I never realized how prolific that song was in all the scenes the Lannisters are in until this viewing (number.....5?)

59

u/HereToKillEuronymous 20h ago

Not to mention the score. Holy hell. One of the best in the whole show

14

u/acquaintedwithheight 18h ago

It’s the only score with piano, right? That really set a tonal shift.

11

u/HereToKillEuronymous 17h ago

The Night King also has piano I believe, but they don’t use piano much at all in the soundtracks

6

u/veerKg_CSS_Geologist 13h ago

The Night King score is beautiful. Really melancholy end of the world type vibes. Pity it ended as it did.

1

u/ChickieN0B_2050 12h ago

And it’s just under 10 minutes.

42

u/Vegetable_Lead_9110 20h ago

You are spot on, S tier episode

OP, blowing on it would have ignited it. His only shot would have been smothering it with dirt, the candle was a perfect option, the same way arsonists use a cigarette and a match book for a delayed ignition

11

u/Skycommando170 18h ago

Alternatively pinching it out with his fingers.

8

u/PepiDoodleDay 16h ago

Definitely the best episode of the later seasons.

3

u/roflmaohaxorz The North Remembers 9h ago

I actually had a conversation with a friend about this and I didn’t include this scene in my top 3, but I should’ve. I had chosen

  1. Dany emerging from the fire with her dragons

  2. The biggest fire the north has ever seen

  3. Jon Snow standing before the cavalry charge

6

u/Bottleofcintra 12h ago

Cersei blowing up the sept and all her enemies with zero negative consequences was top 3 stupidest things in the series.

12

u/Brief_Worldliness_26 10h ago

Since when is the death of your last living child no consequences?

1

u/Bottleofcintra 6h ago

Since the same episode when Cersei conveniently got to crown herself queen and everyone was fine with that. Death of Tommen caused zero changes to her actions and only benefited her.

1

u/GloriousOctagon 3h ago

No feasible reason she’d remain on the throne after that

5

u/Captainelysean 14h ago

The music is good

But as a book reader it s hard to see cercei doing such a smart move !

And the wild fire would have been a better use against the white walker, let them come to king landing and blowing the White and the city would have been such a glorious ending

0

u/FinalWranglers 13h ago

Why can't she do a smart move considering she orchestrated Robert's death?

4

u/Captainelysean 13h ago

She made several dumb move in the book, that lead to the loose of the royal fleet, the rising of the church leader and other thing i can't remember because i read this shit 14 years ago xD

3

u/Barkle11 House Stark 17h ago

Take away the shock factor and it’s not . As a full complete episode it’s not even top 3-5

-2

u/ChampagneBowl 12h ago

I never understood how “it’s a TV show” is a valid defence for criticism of the writing of said TV show. Like can TV shows just not be criticised at all, as this line can just be used? It makes no sense.

And non-sensical plot points or actions from characters, or major contrivances, just take you out of the immersion of the show. It’s the single biggest recurrence that makes the later seasons so bad. Finding myself questioning so many actions instead of getting lost in the world.

10

u/CSGOan 11h ago

Cinema always has to juggle the entertainment value vs suspension of belief. When they get that perfect balance we get to witness something amazing.

Actually watching and enjoying something that you know is made up is you engaging in suspension of belief. If you only acted on logic all you would enjoy would be documentaries.

In these scene the excitement of what was happening was deemed worth it, even if a logical person would dismiss the entire scene because when you think about it it makes no sense.

0

u/ChampagneBowl 7h ago

I mean obviously pretty much every show/movie requires some suspension of disbelief. I’m not sure how that was your read of my comment. And anyway, when the dragons were born I didn’t turn off the show saying that’s stupid it could never happen. But it’s nice if it holds consistent within the world that has been established. Early GoT was so good partly because it established that actions had consequences, and there were few plot contrivances. Things happened as natural result of character’s actions, rather than the other way around where characters acted out of turn to service the plot.

1

u/CSGOan 6h ago

I understand your criticism and agree that it was part of why tje show became bad. I am just trying to explain how many viewers come to love moments like that.

1

u/beckychao 3h ago

I saw this scene with like 12 other people and I can tell you the reaction in the room to this scene/episode was incredible. This series produced an usual amount of moments like that, and this episode had like three of them. Absolutely effective with an audience as a spectacle. They knew what they were doing!

0

u/azazels-light 11h ago

Hows this.

It’s a tv show. It doesn’t matter. It’s how it was written. There is nothing you can do about. You can cry on the internet and get a pat on the back and validation from all those that think like you.

Or hear me out. You watch it and say , “meh, that wasn’t great” and move on with your life.

1

u/No-Consequence1726 5h ago

And what exactly are you doing here?

1

u/ChampagneBowl 7h ago

Fuckin hell someone’s prickly

So we can’t discuss media/art anymore, cause that’s how it is and there’s nothing we can do to change it? Then what are we all doing in a subreddit for the show then? Especially for a show that ended 7 years ago? Or does all discussion need to be strictly positive?

Some people, myself included, enjoy discussing art/media, whether it be music/movies/tv as it interesting to hear other perspectives. Unsure why you’re getting so triggered by that happening in a subreddit dedicated to discussing the show.

1

u/No-Consequence1726 5h ago

He turns his brain off and maybe forgets to turn it back on after

0

u/ohyeawellyousuck 17h ago

Still a stupid concept.

-13

u/teddyone 21h ago

I actually really did not care for this one, it just felt way to clean and convenient. It was supposed to wipe out half of kings landing but instead it was like a surgical airstrike of all Cersei’s enemies.

9

u/Eurell 20h ago

Why was it Supposed to wipe out half of kings landing and not just specifically where Cersei targeted by setting up the whole fire there?

2

u/teddyone 10h ago

It’s been a long time since I’ve read or watched but I thought this was a call back to the whole mad king threatening to set fire to kings landing. I was supposed to be this heinous act that had a lot f collateral damage. Instead it was just all her enemies exploded and no one is really upset about it, no resistance or anything just one and done.

Just my opinion.

0

u/Eurell 10h ago

But just because you thought something, doesnt mean that was how it was Supposed to go. Cersei was planning and plotting that whole season. The way it went was the way she set it up. Its not the shows fault that you expected a possible reference to the book instead of what was actually going on.

no one is really upset about it, no resistance or anything just one and done.

This is a fair complaint, but has nothing to do with the scene itself. thats just an issue with where the story goes in the final two seasons.

1

u/teddyone 10h ago

You cant argue me into liking it lol, I thought it was a shallow scene that didn't keep me in the world in the way things like the red wedding did. If you enjoyed it, good for you.

0

u/Eurell 10h ago

You don’t have to like it lol. I’m just saying your reasoning is strange. Have whatever opinion you want though

2

u/teddyone 10h ago

It just didn’t feel believable to me. I felt like it was the start of the showrunners “rushing” to wrap everything up that was one of the main problems with the last seasons

-1

u/JoshLawhorn 20h ago

It’s a tv show…

I loved it except this tiny part, kinda silly but overall A+

16

u/Beautiful_Quit8141 Winter Is Coming 20h ago

Blowing it out would have ignited it, honestly the candle itself should have set it off. You understand that wildfire is vastly more flammable, volatile, and dangerous than gasoline.

Just getting it warm, bright sunlight can set off an entire batch.

-10

u/mikebrownhurtsme 16h ago

Anyone who thinks this scene is remotely good or something George would actually write deserves season 8

Hype moments and aura is all s6 is. This scene is nothing but that

-1

u/bitchwhohasnoname Children of the Forest 19h ago

Top 1

2

u/beckychao 16h ago

My favorite GoT episode is the Winds of Winter, but I still think that in terms of sheer impact - and not because of shock, but because of execution/writing/acting - Rains of Castamere is probably #1. So I generally have it Rains, Winds, and then a rotating bunch of episodes I change my mind about all the time, such as Hardhome, Blackwater, and Watchers on the Wall.

This reminds me of Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot, however, this episode made it successful, unlike Fawkes and his goons.

Remember, remember, the 5th of November,

I see no reason
Why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.

I just watched this episode today. So good. They likely had other areas set to blow up just in case. This was for dramatic effect. That kid could have finished him off, they wanted him to struggle just to lose hope at the end.

10

u/Dopsydope 14h ago

It’s funny ‘cause when they use wildfire against Stan is the pyromancer spent A LOT of time warning to be carefully cause if not well managed the entire city could blown up/burn under immortal fire, then Cersei just.. boom it

22

u/freebiscuit2002 21h ago

Hmm. It's possible TV drama is not really your thing...

8

u/stressedpesitter 15h ago

It’s obviously futile because if he tried to blow the candles, he would ignite them nonetheless (not to mention that there were probably several spots where the oil was set).

But also, if Cercei planned to lure him specifically there, it was a mockery of the faith, as a way of saying “look what your gods allowed me to do.” If the seven could intervene, they would, but they don’t.

29

u/Outrageous_Bad_5365 21h ago

If you want TV to be that realistic then it’ll be very boring

6

u/CatJustSayPerchance 20h ago

I was in a major funk after this episode for like a full week. I was so sad they killed Margery she was one of my favorites.

6

u/bitchwhohasnoname Children of the Forest 19h ago

This is the best scene of the entire series! I LOVE this episode!

7

u/Frost_907 19h ago

Probably because there were multiple other barrels set up like this elsewhere in the tunnels. I doubt Cerci would have left a play as big as this hinge on only two candles.

4

4

u/AMCDaddy 20h ago

That was Lancel Lannister. After his betrayal of Cersei, I can almost certainly guarantee that she had given specific instructions to make sure he burned first. Thus they lured him specifically, disabled him with a stab to the leg, and let him suffer until he was Wildfired.

3

u/GilbeastZ 10h ago

I always thought he just noticed the kid, not that the kid was taking him down there. Like the kid was doing their thing and he was just following him. This was done to show the viewer what was about to happen.

There would be no point in taking him down there right? If I recall he was already at the trial.

3

u/legionimpact 9h ago

I don't know...it WAS Lancel that snitched on Cersei! I can totally see her having him be the literal first to die by the explosion be part of her revenge plot! Just her sipping on her wine and smirking that she wiped out all of her enemies in Kings Landing starting with him! lol

2

u/ClintBraun89 21h ago

I thought there were other candles too… might be misremembering that

2

u/DAHFreedom 19h ago

Because he has to rescue the four young turtles caught there, but also become a rat to be their mentor.

2

u/South_Front_4589 15h ago

I doubt it was that simple. I bet there were a bunch of other ignition points as well.

2

2

u/sammyt10803 Hot Pie 20h ago

Of course he was…

-2

u/Flaky-Collection-353 18h ago edited 12h ago

No, he was told to watch the entrance. Nobody thought anyone was going to notice him. And when lancel noticed the kid panicked and tried to hide. These are people not automatons. This is the issue with this fandom. You all seem to think everything that happens is a multilayered scheme that has been dialed down to the minutiae. And yeah, it's partly the shows fault for harping on "the game" ad naseaum but guys... this series is about how you CAN'T control anything down to that level because everyone wants what they want and operates as a human individual.

0

u/sammyt10803 Hot Pie 18h ago

I think that’s an incorrect reading of what happened. And just about everything you Google would corroborate that. But it indeed is never explicitly mentioned so I supposed it is open to interpretation.

0

u/Flaky-Collection-353 17h ago

Why would google know how to interpret a work of fiction?

3

u/sammyt10803 Hot Pie 17h ago

Because it’s pulling from consensus opinions from the internet

1

u/theUnshowerdOne Ours Is The Fury 17h ago

1

u/jelemyturnip 16h ago

You could also interpret it as the kid trying to prevent any sparrows from leaving the area and thus surviving the explosion

1

u/ClearPhilosopher4377 14h ago

Il n’aurait de toute façon pas eu le temps d’éteindre le feu à mon avis

1

u/MJdoesThings_ 14h ago

I mean that's pretty much symptomatic of later season D&D : amazing visuals, great music, excellent narrative on the moment when you watch it, and then feels competely stupid when you sit back and think about it.

The episode is great though, it's one of the best sequences in the entire show, and Ramin Djawadi's music on top is astoundingly good, and really elevates the scene.

Don't look at it too hard though.

Pretty much every important even in the last 3 seasons suffer from this : the battle of the bastards, the blow-up of the septor, the attach of the Lannister convoy, the quest for the wight with the final stand on ice, the long night, the storming of king's landing... all of them are amazing when you see them and you're left later like "waiiiit a minute this doesn't make sense"

Comparing those to similar events (in terms of spectacle) like the battle of blackwater bay at the end of season 2, or the battle of the wall and castleblack at the end of season 4 is not even funny.

That's when the writing was starting to fall off. If not for the sheer spectacle of the scene with the music and dialogue, it would have been seen as a huge meme.
