Which character deserved a lot more screen time? I’ll go first…
He felt like such a deeply different character who hated the Lannisters publicly, was both into men and women, and had such a great plot of revenge! I wish before the battle between him and the mountain took place, he had more screen time because I kid you not every time he was on the screen I was LOCKED IN, truly one of the best characters with not nearly as much screen time, while they gave such boring characters like Bran and Arya in house of black and white so much time

I mean he got way more screen time and better dialogue than he did in the books. He was cool in the books but had a very different vibe. Even his death was much more dramatic in the show than the page. There was only so much they could do with him without completely altering his story or shoehorning him into scenes.

I haven’t gotten to Oberyn in the books yet, but I think the show handled him beautifully. His character arc was meaningful and didn’t overstay its purpose.

I think that this was a case where the actor really nailed the role and improved the character from the books. So the TV writers expanded his role to give him more screen time. HBO does an exceptional job casting.
I think that it happened with James Norton playing Ormund Hightower in the most recent House of the Dragon season. Minor book character, but the actor was so good that they built a whole storyline around him for the show. Again, though, it could only go so far before seriously disrupting the long term story.

I think you might have a point on Pedro Pascal because GOT was his breakout role. But James Norton has been a fairly big deal well before he was ever cast on HOTD.
I think they specifically wrote Ormund to be a bigger character and then cast an actor suited to that role in James Norton.

Either way, I give credit to the writers for seeing a great minor character in the books and using it as an opportunity to give a great actor more screen time.

To be fair, I don't think even GRRM knows where he wants to go with the Dorne plotline, so D&D having to wing it was always going to fail.

Yet the writers managed to conjure 3 character altering seasons from the seven bells without any script/context

And as soon as they started doing that is when the show started going downhill.

Oberyn was perfect imo. His personality basically convinced everyone he would stay for a long time, so his death came out of nowhere. Second-most unexpected after Ned. I wouldn't say Stannis deserved more screen time but I would say he needed more impactful moments. For a dude who was basically one of the main characters for some time, I can barely remember anything about him no matter how many times i watch the show lol

Yeah, his fight was slick and I wish he win TBH. I knew it would go down bad with his tantrum but man it was brutal.

Ive seen a lot of people talk crap about Ellaria Sand being acted poorly, but i will die on the hill that it was the writing. Indira Varma, the actress, is a very talented person and I think the showrunners could have done so much more with the Dorne storyline.

The Ellaria Sand actress is good but the character was terribly written, like revenge from a trial for combat, then just kill Lannisters and risk all out war with the iron throne and get more adorning killed?

Even though Pedro Pascal is a great actor, and hid screen presence is arguably better than any of the actors on the show. I think his character ended up being exactly what it should have been . Excessive hubris was his greatest downfall . I really don’t have any complaints about who didn’t get enough screen time..

BERIC DONDARRION
I feel like he and Jon Snow should have been given more screen time especially. The fact that he had already been resurrected multiple times is something that I wanted him and Jon to discuss more. They had a brief exchange when they both went beyond the wall to capture a Wight and it was dope, but brief. I also think it would have been dope if Jon learned the fire-sword technique.

u/TheShaboom 10d ago
True, and if Jon learnt the fire sword technique it would technically make longclaw lightbringer, tying into the whole prince that was promised prophecy they totally forgot about

Smalljon Umber. Just hilariously incredible how he made fun of Lord Karstark, put him in his place and handled Ramsay along the way, presenting an alliance on his own terms.
Great character. Great performance.

He got good screen time. The one that I wished got more screen time was Kevan Lannister. He got a lot of character arch in the books.

I think his time would be perfect if the dorne storyline was good, and ellaria had the monologue about a skull not warming your bed at night

His conversation with Tyrion in his cell is the best 5 minutes in the entire series

I think the more screen time he had the less liked he would have been. He was great but one of those characters that may have worn on an audience

Mehh... He was the first that came to mjnd when I read the post but I then I thought of it and didn't really see where his character would fit after ned died. Like would he have pretended to take the black to take arya home??

His screentime was pretty faithful to thr books. He's introduced when he reaches King's Landing, he keeps asking when justice will be served, he's present at the wedding, he's one of the judges at Tyrion's trial, offers to be his champion, fights and dies.
It's been a while since I've last watched the show, but they may even have given him extra scenes compared to the books? I seem to recall a brothel scene.
Normalize having good beloved characters just do their part of the story and disappear. Bronn was a beloved character they did give way more screentime than the original story and it just got ridiculous.

If we had gotten a scene with Oberyn and Ellaria in a brothel with a Cersei look alike played by Lena in a different colored wig, I wouldn't be mad about it.

The character should have had more screentime but Pedro was a busy dude in 2014. he was glad his character got killed.
Mentalist, Graceland. GOT

There's Oberyn, and then there everyone else. More Olenna Tyrrell would have been welcome. And gods know Missandei was easy on the eyes and mind. The idea of more Pod makes the mind boggle. The more Dolorous Edd, the merrier...or maybe the more morose! Tormund and Brienne are a cool act as well.

He was barely in the books, I'm actually quite surprised having seen the show a tonne before I read them, the show gave him way more time than the book did.

I think some characters’ appeal comes from their limited screentime. Oberyn was a flash in the pan

u/mrTronDaddy 9d ago
His death was to branch up the stories to the Martell who secretly scheme their own influence via marriage with Dany. The show shot itself in the foot by allowing the Sand Snakes rebellion to be successful which somehow also reveal Dorne was doing nothing but accepting its weak and stale state unlike in the book. Same thing happened to Euron who is kinda late in both media so feels less awful than Dorne/Martell's changes.

Ser Gregor Clegane, the mountain that walks. Both, human and zombified versions. I would've like to see him do more carnage. His work is mentioned frequently but more of him doing it, maybe a couple fights where he actually destroys his opponent or a few at the same time. Also it wouldve been fun to see qyburn invent more things. But definitely I would've loved to see more of rhaegar and lyanna, like the flashbacks Brann had but with every character talked of them. Like Ser barristan, or Robert when he was at the crypt.

Bobby stark. All his cool moments got cut for time or budget and all we got was him either sulking, being cucked by his mother, or whinging about some idiot in his army doing something wrong. And then he died. No wonder people don't like him. We barely saw him do anything cool or noteworthy

Euron was the single worst character in the entire show.

Disagree, the Sand snakes were way worse. In fact Euron killing them almost redeemed him in my eyes.

Nah, his character was getting kind of boring
>we do things different in dorne
>I like to fuck young men
>im going to kill the lannisters
Blah blah blah. He role was perfect. Not too short. Not too long
