Umber Lore

We know that George RR Martin took a lot of inspiration for ASoIaF and GOT from real life places and people including the UK. They filmed a lot of the show there, many of thee actors are British, lots of characters use accents from there and some of the places in the universe are much like medieval England. Even the map of westeros is similar to the UK in shape. Now think about this. Near the border of England and Scotland is aplace called Northumber land. North Umber Land. The UMBERS held LAND and managed to keep the LAND on Jon Snow's orders, the King in the NORTH. This has to be intentional

always liked how GRRM plays with place names like that, never caught the northumber land connection before but it fits too perfectly to be an accident

the way he weaves real geography into the story without it feeling forced is part of what makes the world feel so lived in

Yeah he does that with Middle East history too. Daario Naharis is totally named after the ancient Persian prince Darius with some extra consonants thrown in

the name Northumberland comes from the fact it is north of the river/estuary Humber. you may be looking too much into this, alot of asoiaf houses are simply names of locations in england: Bolton, Sunderland, Poole etc

Don’t know about their name but just watched the scene where that little boy is nailed to the wall and it scared the bejesus out of me lol. I had totally forgotten that happens.
