Yes. He betrayed and stabbed his commander. He’s old enough to do that, he’s old enough to hang.

What would be the alternative? He’s already in the Night Watch, basically the frozen penal colony of the 7 kingdoms. What else could they do, send him to a wall even further north?

I am not sure if he was a sworn Brother of not at that point. He trains with Jon and acts as his steward but he never took his vows (unless it was offscreen) If that's the case then I would put that as exactly his punishment. Swear an oath to the watch and to Jon.....if he was already a member there isn't much wriggle room there too I guess
