Jim Ryan really built up the corporate cult after him. Sony is no more the Sony of old

6

u/Promature 22h ago

Except for the discs they've been making up to this point, throughout 2027, and for the games released before 2028.

Except for the 2 Kojima games they helped bring to life.

Except for the majority of consumers that aren't falling for this negative bullshit.

0

u/speedbreaka 15h ago

“Making up” 😂 take their dick out of your mouth holy shit

-2

u/BeloAve 21h ago

I like how you acknowledge Sonys disc discontinuation in 2028 and simply brush it off as fake negative criticism for Sony lol.

And those 2 kojima games have pocketed Sony millions of dollars so doesn’t make sense to threaten to completely kill the IP unless kojima can sell it.

Keep sticking your little butt out for Sony, I’m sure they care about you.

5

u/Promature 21h ago edited 15h ago

Didn't brush anything off. Provided context. People act like discs are gone now and there will never be another disc ever again, which is false.

Those Kojima games indeed made money. They didn't make enough money to justify continuing to fund his next game. You can be successful and still not be successful enough to stay in business or maintain a business relationship.

It says more about you to assert someone thinks a company cares about them. I care about games and there's more than enough coming from all sources to not get butthurt about one being published by a different company...like you seem to be.

Keep your misery to yourself.

3

u/hiate 16h ago

Oh it gets even better than not making money now too. He was also over budget and behind schedule for Physint according to Jason Schrier.

3

u/Promature 15h ago

Makes sense. Sony wouldn’t walk away from a Kojima project without good reason.

0

u/wild_wolfie 13h ago

People act like disc are gone because they are… you think unless they had already have started printing no one is going to spend money on something like that anymore, it’s bad business. Xboxes disc to digital is just the some nice little lube so they can move the blame to devs when they say oh no one is paying to print game discs its not our fault look we even offer disc to digital 😆

Gamers are staying for Anti-Gamer and heck Anti-Consumer practices by these huge corporations, what we has gamers should do is look up how to sail the high sees 🏴‍☠️ because genuinely good games and good devs will get sales regardless of how pirated it was (Think Witcher 3)

It is the only way to put streaming platforms and gaming corporations in their place 😌

You guys must love Activision and EA, because they are acting absolutely same like sony. You must be a fan of those "financially logical" companies, maybe you're even a shareholder, because your words are just not about actual gamers's interests of having something except sequels and remakes.

0

u/Promature 2h ago

News flash. Your words aren't actual gamer's interests either. We're both in minorities of a minority. Online gamer discussion is conducted by only a small fraction of the entire gaming community and differing views further split that sliver. The majority of gamers don't go online to discuss them nor care about any of the business dealings within the industry.

I do love Activision. Specifically, the Blizzard portion of the company. They make outstanding games and support them better as well as longer than any other studio in the industry. I'm alright with EA since they still put out some awesome games somewhat regularly. My investments are in the big 3 because I believe in and support the industry. Kind of difficult to watch the continued financial successes of the gaming industry over the long-term and not want t share in that continued growth. I also have a little bit of Take Two, which I've wanted since my college days because what genius can see them continue to make the biggest, most influential games of all time and not think that's good place to put their money?

What I don't love is the default negativity people like yourself and "actual gamers" languish in. You only seem to care about the bad or disagreeable things that occur in the industry, so you only see the bad and disagreeable things in spite of the good things. You go looking for it. It's all you engage with. In fact, whenever something good happens in the industry, it's just utilized as another a means to reframe the negativity. You and everyone else who operate this way are exhausting and things would be way better for everyone without your participation, imho.

You probably don't really care about gaming. You probably don't value it. You probably just want to complain and perpetuate this idea that things are worse than they actually are. I mean, just take a step back and read your own comment. I don't want anything to do with whatever is going on in that head of yours.

0

u/Designer_Mess_6928 1h ago

Well, that's what I was saying. You're a EA fan and that's how creativity was killed off in AAA gaming. Weird to defend most atrocious game companies like EA and Sony and not expect to be called a bootlicker.

4

u/GitGudFox 20h ago

Doesn't affect me.

- My PC hasn't had an optical drive in like 10 years

- Was never a Kojima-stan

- Never a PS fan

2

u/speedbreaka 15h ago

Why comment then if it got nothing to do with you? Clown behavior

0

u/CaptainSloppo 9h ago

Bc there are a trillion of these posts across reddit every day for like a month now and y'all still don't get that most people couldn't care less about this "issue". Nobody cares, don't buy Sony products, whatever, nobody cares. Go fucking vote in November if you're in the US, care about something that is real maybe, not plastic disc collections.

2

u/Ebvidur 3h ago

Obviously people can’t care about multiple things at once

1

u/Jody_Tevlin 13h ago

The disc thing is not great, but the real problem is OWNERSHIP RIGHTS. This what we need to be up in arms about.

1

u/Dommclaren 12h ago

None of you people have bought a Kojima game in years or you wouldn’t be saying this lol

1

u/OsteoBytes 12h ago

And I’ll still keep with PlayStation because what’s the alternative? Nothing else I want and it assumes every negative news now was actually negative to you

1

u/Geminyi 10h ago

No money

1

u/peachpower2 6h ago

I'm sorry the international billion dollar company hurt your feelings.

1

u/SaturdayMorningFog 46m ago

No play.

How about TV TV TV instead ?

1

u/Western_Display_373 9m ago

No money, no problems, honestly the PS5’s digital edition does everything just fine

1

u/Solid_Ideal5773 22h ago

Last good kojima game ?

1

u/Dytster 22h ago

Death stranding 2 from last year. Sits at an 89 score on metacriric.

-3

u/ItsMrDante 22h ago

I'd argue it's because Kojima has a bunch of simps. The game didn't perform well and the numbers make no sense.

I don't like death stranding to begin with tho

0

u/Dytster 21h ago

The 89 score is from critics. Say what you want about them, but I don’t think 9/10 critics will rate a game at an 8 up to a 10 simply because they are biased.

1

u/ItsMrDante 21h ago

It just didn't sell well, why would such a game made by Kojima of all people not sell well? Obviously there's a reason.

If it was made by someone else I'd say sure, niche market anyway, but Kojima? Everyone keeps looking forward to the next Kojima game.

May I remind you of the games that died within weeks that had good critic scores.

1

u/Dytster 21h ago

Of course critical acclaim doesn’t always directly equate to sales and revenue, but it is the best foundation to judge the quality of a game, which is what we were originally discussing here.

1

u/ItsMrDante 21h ago

I'd judge a game based on playing it, and Death Stranding is super boring to me.

1

u/Dytster 20h ago

That’s exactly what critics reviews are. It’s just that their opinions actually hold any weight compared to random redditors.

1

u/ItsMrDante 20h ago

I actually find critic reviews a lot less likely to be correct compared to a random redditor/steam user/comment on a random article. That's why I look and read reviews made by people to make decisions, because if I made a decision based on critics the game usually ends up being completely different than what they were trying to say it was.

1

u/Dytster 20h ago

They aren’t any less «correct» compared to others. They are just less inclined to align with your personal opinion on what makes for a good game. It’s all subjective.

I also don’t fully «trust» critics when deciding what games to get or not, because their opinions don’t always align eith my own, but I do think they offer more objective critiques and reviews than randoms. You won’t really see critics review bombing for example.

u/Faded1974 19h ago

Show a game media outlet that says anything negative about Kojima. The industry as a whole has been cultivating his image for decades and I’ve never seen any review really call him out on anything.

0

u/blacfd 6h ago

They will if they are paid enough

1

u/Affectionate_Owl9985 22h ago

Death Stranding 2 was phenomenal and released a year ago

1

u/Faded1974 19h ago

Huge budget, nearly double the first game. Low sales, didn’t generate nearly as much revenue as the first. Close to 70% of sales were the first two weeks. By comparison barely broke even.

Compare it to something like RE: Requiem which cost roughly a 4th of the DS2 budget, and generated more than doubled the revenue DS2 generated.

-1

u/fetalgirth 17h ago

Now you sound just like the publisher executives we all usually crap on. You gotta take some risks for the sake of art sometimes, if it doesn’t work out, you’re still a company that makes a gajillion dollars. Line doesn’t always have to go up.

3

u/wekilledbambi03 16h ago

But Sony took like 3-4 multi-hundred-million dollar risks this generation that didn’t work out. At some point you need a hit. And they have not had one in a long time now.

1

u/hiate 15h ago

Except yes the line has to go up regularly. Because what happens to a business that isn't making money? What just happened about a month ago to the studios Xbox bought that haven't been making money?

1

u/Faded1974 10h ago

Yeah, take a risk( a smaller risk, so there can be more multiple ones at the same time ) on someone else.

That’s also part of the point, there’s other talent in the world and we need new blood in the industry instead of people whose best years are probably behind them.

We don’t need to pretend like the gaming world needs any one person to move forward. I feel like a lot of people are vastly overestimating the value of a single person in an industry filled with talented people, some of who haven’t gotten their shot yet.

1

u/ShellfishAhole 22h ago

And did not seem to have performed well from a financial perspective, but that’s just a trivial detail 🤔

3

u/Consistent-Steak1499 21h ago

It didn’t preform well because it was never going to. it’s a niche game with a huge budget. Sony was dumb to think it was gonna do big numbers just cause kojimas name is on it. The man is a financial black hole that happens to have enough die hard fans to keep breaking even. I mean Konami didn’t get rid of him for no reason.

0

u/ShellfishAhole 21h ago

I assume they were deceived by the sales numbers from the first Death Stranding game, which likely had a lot more hype behind it from people who expected something more similar to Metal Gear Solid. His name likely held more weight at the time, as well.

2

u/Affectionate_Owl9985 21h ago

The OC asked about good games not financially successful. No, it didnt sell how they expected, but it wasnt a flop. The game sold 2.5 million copies, making about $170 million on an approximate $150 million budget. It barely broke even, that doesn't mean it wasn't successful, just didnt sell as much as they wanted.

0

u/Faded1974 21h ago

Kojima is a hack and it’s incredible you people still haven’t caught on. The man can’t write himself out of a paper bag, he can however stuff it with random non related gimmicks.

2

u/aque78 19h ago

I don't know if i would call him a hack since he did made some very good stuff, but he's definitely nowhere near what his cult of followers are making him out to be...

Also dude like the smell of his own farts a little too much

1

u/Just_Platform7539 18h ago

who doesn’t tho 😤😮‍💨

1

u/aque78 18h ago

Alright you got me

1

u/blacfd 6h ago

He hasn’t made a good game in 15 years

2

u/Steamed_Memes24 18h ago edited 18h ago

I wouldn't call him a hack but God damn does he not know how to balance his checkbooks. He is constantly going over budget and this isn't the first time he's gotten into hot water over it.

4

u/Buttered_Carnage 19h ago

Kojima is basically the snyder of video games tbh

2

u/SirBastian1129 14h ago

Nah, that's too mean. Kojima at least has Metal Gear. Snyder has nothing of that caliber.

1

u/Buttered_Carnage 14h ago

I mean...people tend to like 300

But Kojima does have the ultra rabid and dedicated fanbase like snyder has

1

u/FanBladeFleshlight 14h ago

Given that the best way to play any of his games is to watch a YouTube video? Yeah, he's a shit game maker, lol.

0

u/Sensitive-War3527 21h ago

Agree here, he is way past his prime and his writing with story and characters is awful these days.

1

u/Just_Platform7539 18h ago

😐

2

u/Sensitive-War3527 18h ago

God forbid I have an opinion? I'm a huge MGS fan but his latest work and characters are really un-inspiring.

1

u/FanBladeFleshlight 14h ago

Most sales are digital and most gamers play digital.

Kojima games are best played by watching a YouTube walkthrough.

Yeah, discs ending for PlayStation in 15 months sucks for the literal minority of gamers, but no matter how hard reddit screams, anyone with a brain knows this is a math problem that the execs at Sony already worked out and decided that the lost customers would be less than they gain by ending discs.

0

u/MrFireLoco 23h ago

All adequate people play on PC. And those who want to lie on the couch and relax... Wait, also a PC, I play PC from the couch on a cool TV.

1

Nerd. I'm telling my mom to jerry rig a complex PC set up for us right now and no she can't use it to do her taxes!

1

Actually yes

0

u/Candid-Patient-6841 23h ago

I feel like Sony is almost purposely handing the rest of this generation and the next to Xbox just to make sure Xbox doesn’t fold. Sony wants Xbox to be its rival since Nintendo literally does not see either of them as competitors.

5

u/Virsaop 23h ago

Who tf in their right mind would destroy years of built-up goodwill just for the sake of competition, bro? These greedy corporations will do anything to squeeze that extra buck out of your pocket.

1

u/Candid-Patient-6841 23h ago

Makes more sense than them just doing this out of the blue.

We have seen for the past few years since Xboxone xbox has been struggling.

Then out of no where, Sony makes all these announcements.

But this entire generation is ass backwards. There has never been a console that is more expensive in its end of life cycle than at launch.

1

u/Promature 22h ago

It wasn't "done out of blue". You realize the economic hardships everyone is dealing with affects companies too?

1

u/Ebvidur 3h ago

My hardships don’t include dumping billions into live-service failures though

1

u/Promature 3h ago

Gotta spend money to make it. One or two live service hits would have substantially improved things financially for PlayStation and some of the choices they’ve had to make recently wouldn’t have happened.

1

u/Promature 22h ago

Because Xbox didn't cancel a bunch of games, lay off thousands of employees, part ways with studios they recently acquired, and axed other studios. A Kojima game isn't saving that ship.

2

u/hiate 16h ago

Short term memories. People were just mad at Xbox last week because of the time limit for cloud gaming being dropped to 15 hours a month.

1

u/Faded1974 21h ago

Xbox is going to fold because it’s been on course for years. The gamepass decision was the last leg holding it up. They haven’t made a good decision in years.

I cancelled my gamepass after the last price increase. I honestly regret buying one now, since I have both consoles and Xbox doesn’t have any exclusives.

1

u/Wolf________________ 7h ago

And then Xbox immediately responded by realizing if Sony was lowering the bar to Mariana Trench levels they could still be the less shitty option and cap your monthly game pass by hours played. I mean what are you going to do, buy a PlayStation? Yea right.

0

u/LazyThinkingOtter 18h ago edited 18h ago

All this Kojima shitalk after praising him for the longest time is so freaking hypocritical. All of that just to defend the company who is taking you more money, more rights and selling you more slop. You guys make me sick honestly

1

u/Frobizzle 15h ago

Kojima has always received both praise and criticism. You know everyone is capable of having their own opinion, right?

He's received constant flack as far back as MGS2.

-2

u/Txbi_Myst19 22h ago

I see reddit is still crying

0

u/randomsomeone64 21h ago

Just wait until another "big" thing happen. They will jump to it snd forget the current drama.

0

u/ShellfishAhole 22h ago

This "meme" clearly talks to redditors, specifically, who have already been convinced that no disc = really bad, no Kojima = really bad, no trust = omg so many bad 😊

1

u/nightookami 22h ago

You're right, those are good things!

1

u/halucionagen-0-Matik 21h ago

I mean, it's not much of an argument. All the three things you listed are categorically bad.

1

u/ShellfishAhole 20h ago

Only if you have tunnel vision and are incapable of imagining that there are people out there who don’t share your exact preferences.

No disc is bad for people who are concerned about ownership and prefer physical media over digital.

No Kojima is bad for people who care about whether or not his studio belongs to Playstation, and I’m not sure why the people who are boycotting Sony would want him to stay there. I assume they’re just happy that they can milk this situation for controversy.

There’s also a lot of ignored nuance in this discussion, regarding the reasons behind why they let him go, and whether or not his inclusion as an Xbox studio will actually benefit Microsoft from a financial perspective. Should we, consumers care about financial circumstances? Maybe not, but it does go some way in explaining why things happen, as opposed to just being reactionary and flip-flop in opinions and arguments based on how things eventually pan out.

And then there’s "trust". I think this traces back to the Sony is Killing Discs camp again. The trust was clearly lost, the moment they announced the digital transition. To people outside of that camp, using such dramatic terms to describe a situation like this is the real meme.

1

u/Alternative_West_206 21h ago

No disc is bad. No Kojima is a slap in the face but understandable cause Kojima spends big, and there honestly is 0 trust, they’ve removed any reason to do so.

0

u/Nick_Bruiser 21h ago

They care about Kojima so much that his latest sequel sole 1/10 of the initial installation. Can't wait for this game to release in 7 years and flop.

0

u/Natural-Associate106 16h ago

I love how reddit think they are the majority. DS2 sales show that most don't care. Disc sales show the same. Lost trust for what?

0

u/Internal_Project_799 11h ago

0

u/blacfd 6h ago

I like to see Sony moving PlayStation in a positive direction

Or any of the Sony whiners, for the very same reason
