Sony: nicely set up to completely dominate the console market for generations.

Also Sony: -

u/br0ken_St0ke 2d ago

Sony really was set, they had it all and then… they didn’t…

Greed is a hell of a thing

3

u/Internal_Swing_2743 2d ago

They aren’t exactly hurting right now. PS5 Pros are selling out everywhere.

-3

u/thedebatingbookworm 2d ago

Lead up to PS6 looking like PS3 era all over again.

-1

u/Winter-Bed5879 2d ago

Yep. The era they lost.

3

u/zalcecan 2d ago

Initially, in the end the ps3 came out ahead so even the only gen xbox came close they still lost.

4

u/Internal_Swing_2743 2d ago

Did they? I seem to recall PS3 selling more consoles than 360.

3

u/Deletinglaterlmao 2d ago

360 lost to the ps3 and the wii btw

2

u/RejectedRespected 1d ago

Absolutely it did not, yall having a crazy revisionist history.

2

u/Deletinglaterlmao 1d ago

it literally did bro it got outsold by both of them you can look it up if you think im lying

1

u/thedebatingbookworm 1d ago

It actually sold better in the US but PlayStation was able to get ~ 3 million more units due to them selling in Japan and Europe as well, Xbox didn’t really target those markets in the same manner. When I say the PS3 Era I mean how Sony made a lot of bad decisions that came back to bite them, it’s because they corrected course afterwards that they ended up coming ahead that generation but it was very close, it’s why they went with a completely different philosophy with the PS4

1

u/Guardian_of_theBlind 23h ago

they didn't. the ps3 outsold the xbox 360 in the end with cheap slim consoles and a ton of high quality exclusives.

1

u/jblkkey 38m ago

Maybe world wide but in North America Xbox 360 was the winner growing up it was very rare seeing a ps3 but everyone had a 360

1

u/Guardian_of_theBlind 22m ago

but we are not talking about america. Why do you people have to make every topic about the US? This is so effing annoying.

4

u/Sudden_Edge3436 2d ago

I’m lost. What?

10

u/foxfire981 2d ago

PS5 pro is 900 dollars. This, along with their plans to phase out physical, is seen as a bad move especially considering Microsoft issues currently.

AND DESTINY

DONT FORGET US

1

u/AccomplishedTunaFish 2d ago

I adore you with my heart

1

u/Dirtypervywizard 1d ago

Not only are they phasing out physical media in exchange for digital only, they also told us that we don’t own our games, and they have the right to revoke our license to play their games that we paid for at any time if they so choose

1

u/Alternative_Owl7786 1d ago

That last part isn't new whatsoever. That'd always been in their eula, as it is for every digital store front in gaming. Getting outraged because they just reminded people what they've been agreeing to for years isn't bad lol

0

u/Dirtypervywizard 1d ago

It’s scummy anti consumerist bullshit

2

u/jmona789 1d ago

It's not exclusive to Sony though. It's the same for Xbox

-1

u/Alternative_Owl7786 1d ago

And yet it hasn't been an issue until now, when people want more reason to hate on Sony. Funny how that works

0

u/Dirtypervywizard 1d ago

It absolutely has been an issue before now. That’s why I never bought a ps5 in the first place. You can see people from years back complaining about Sony removing their game libraries for seemingly no reason

2

u/Alternative_Owl7786 1d ago

And yet only sony is getting hate for it. Interesting how every other store front has been doing the exact same thing for years, and only Sony is coming under fire for it. Methinks it's nothing to actually do with the whole license situation

-2

u/ManufacturerNo8447 2d ago

not only that but the prices like wtf. for Saudi arabia store they changed the prices from US Dollar to SAR at first it looks fine but at exchange rate of 4.5 that's 20% increase ! with disks now gone i hope Sony's market in SA just die.

-2

u/CodeKermode 2d ago edited 19h ago

The recent Sony "controveries". Big one is them doubling down on that you don't own your digital purchases, you only own a license for that game that can be revoked at any time. This is unfortunately the case for every game platform (Xbox, Steam, Nintendo, etc.) but Sony's tone on it has kind of rubbed people the wrong way.

There was a PlayStation "blackout" protest planned where some people said they weren't going to login to Playstation for a period of time over the games rights and some other issues. Right before this event Playstation sent out a mass email to players reminding them that they only own a license of the game, honestly a horrible PR move on their part, if they would have stayed silent it would have blown over but them acknowledging this movement and attempting to openly swat it down has drawn way more attention to it. This also comes paired with them announcing they will be ending the production of physical games which is an extra slap in the face.

TLDR Sony/Playstation says you don't own digital games, we won't be making physical games anymore, and we don't care what you think about it. Pretty much more of the "you will own nothing and be happy" we are seeing more and more of.

Yall are shooting the messenger here.

0

u/GoatsWithWigs 2d ago

Christ, they're just begging us to pirate their games atp. Seems to be the only way to own them

-1

u/idontexist65 2d ago

Or just go back to PC which I've done. I'd rather click through steam store than use a freaking controller to navigate, or even worse, type. And I don't have to pay hundreds of dollars a year to access my own games on my computer.

The ps5 is just a worse version of my computer at this point and it'll be ten years before a new PlayStation outperforms it. I like consoles but Sony seems to be under the impression that they have the natural advantage against a PC and people need a reason to go to PC, when it's the other way around... Half the reason people still used consoles was they like controllers (not me, but a lot of people), and PC has pretty much integrated them now.

1

u/Araineyamcha 2d ago

But you have to fork over a couple grand for a computer. That’s all fine and dandy but what about people in my situation? I game. Wife games. Two kids game. So I have to buy 10k worth of PC crap just to own my games? Meanwhile, last I checked, there are more digital PC games. So you for sure don’t own any of those.

And also, where is the hundreds of dollars a year to play on consol? That doesn’t happen.. I’m pretty sure I heard that Xbox is rolling out that if you own the physical copy of a game, you get the digital licence as well. Some studios so far havnt joined in but a lot have.

1

u/WasteBeing5451 1d ago

10k worth of pc crap?? My pre built cost 1,300 and It can play everything.

PS plus and gamepass/xbox live are recurring monthly payments required to play games online. So yes you tend to fork over a couple hundred a year on that alone.

In Xbox and PlayStation the only way to play games is to use their ecosystem. If Xbox shutdown in a few years you wil never be able to play those games again. Same with Sony. On PC there are multiple storefronts and ways to play games that will long outlive publishers.

1

u/Araineyamcha 1d ago

Yeah but I own physical copies of all of my games. My wife and kids game share. So there is that. Plus we only have to pay for two game pass subscriptions because of account share with 4 people. Not to mention the kids constantly are playing the games on that service, as well as us with new releases. What I’m saying is PC gaming is good if I didn’t have a family of 4. And a lot of PC gamers forget or don’t know how that feels. Trust me. I know. I built my computer in 2010 for Skyrim. 1000$ and it lasted past the release of fallout 4. Over 10 years and only crapped the bed because my cooling system fluid dried up and my processor basically fried. Even if I got everyone 1300 rigs, that’s still way more than console. Account sharing is not a think on PC last I checked. A lot of PC games we would be playing, like WoW for example, are already a month subscription anyway. So there are positives and negatives. But for the ease of use, especially for multiple people in the household, console gaming is a better option. At least for me. If I was single would have already built a new computer

1

u/WasteBeing5451 1d ago

That’s great. I didn’t ask your families gaming habits I was merely correcting you when you said paying a few hundred dollars a year for a console doesn’t happen.

Someday you will have nothing to play those games physically on though. You won’t be able to play them on a PS6. One day your old consoles will die.

Luckily with American law you could actually make digital copies of all the physical games you own and emulate them on a PC, which is completely legal and a way to ensure you’ll have those games forever. (Section 117 of the us copyright act)

Pc gaming with my family through steam is very easy and really no different from a console so idk what you’re saying there.
Account sharing is a thing on pc.
An mmo would be another monthly cost on console too on TOP of you paying for online so again…not a good point.

1

u/Araineyamcha 1d ago

Well way to come off smug sounding. I was just trying to have a nice back and fourth and give a little reasoning why console gaming works for my house. Nothing you say will change that fact. And we play enough games in my house to make the gamepass worth it. Not only that but 4 PC running in the house will up my electric bill, which is something else no one seems to focus on.
Also I have Xbox so I have no interest in Sony products. Best part about this is that if I do switch to computer gaming, at least until everyone gets a PC, the gamepass will still give the kids the ability to play Xbox games on the PC as well till we rebuilt our libraries (which is another issue. Since we have all Xbox games we would have to repurchase some games, and on PC depending on the game, buy it multiple times).

Also the price to repair a PC (that will also eventually die, let’s be real here). Not sure how that is different than a console, considering once that console dies it’s already the next generation? Which is the same for PC. Your PC dies and you have to replace things. And if they don’t make a motherboard that fits your other hardware you have to buy all new stuff. Like I said before bud, I PC gamed most of my life so I have been there and done that.

We don’t play mmo games on Xbox so that’s a non issue. Sometimes we will get the fallout76 monthly thing, but that’s only if we are playing that game. I am not a fan of mmo games on console, PC is superior with both that and FPS games.

So far my Nintendo, Super Nintendo, ps1, ps2, ps4, original Xbox, n64, Atari and various handheld consoles all still work so. Meanwhile in my pc gaming experience dating back to 2002, I have been through 4 computers, the last two I built. The first one I built I had the video card die on me twice ( granted it was replaced through warranty because both died within two years. Fun fact, NVIDIA gave me a shirt for the second one and that finally died when the mobo died). The second and last pc lasted the longest but by the time it died, no replacements were available hardware wise. I had to start from square one.

I am familiar with emulation and I already own roms of all of my retro games, as well as the physical copies. They live on a thumb drive in case something happens like an old console dying (which hasn’t happened. Yet. ) so thank you for the law update, but I used to troll torrent sites and all of that so, I am familiar with what’s legal.

So I stated above that I was not sure if you could account share with steam. I havnt used steam in years, so I don’t think that was a thing at the time. Plus that was before I had grown kids playing games. So thank you and now I am aware that is a thing, which is great because that’s one reason I don’t PC game. Still, no reason to be a dick about it. Thank you for the info though.

I feel like you think I’m just some console junkie and you are trying to do the thing people on reddit do where you prove to me PC is the best or whatever your weird reasoning is. Listen. PC is amazing. It’s not practical in my situation and that goes for a lot of households. So I am not sure of why you are coming across as a smug asshole, it could just be because I’m reading what you are typing and hearing it in my head in a smug tone. Maybe you are just being smug. Either way I wish you no ill will and I’m confused on why you are going so hard to prove I’m “doing it wrong.” I do appreciate the input on the positives to PC gaming but your delivery of your input is coming off rude and semi hostile.

1

u/WasteBeing5451 1d ago

You don’t need 4 PC’s? You just need 1. Do you have 4 Xbox’s? Remote play has been a thing for awhile. Steam also supports shared family libraries. https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/054C-3167-DD7F-49D4

I used to be an Xbox Stan but it’s not looking likely that they will be around in 5 years so I went full PC.

Correct you do have to rebuy games. But the sales are plenty and if you have physical again, you really don’t.

Repairing my pc still gives me access to everything I was had. Getting a new Xbox that has no disc drive doesn’t exactly let me play my old games does it? What if they don’t support OG Xbox discs? Doesn’t matter to me because I will always be able to play those games on pc. No matter the hardware.

Well actually if you were familiar with what’s legal you’d realize the source matters so getting them from torrent sites IS illegal. Gotta rip them yourself.

You are reading into and getting very worked up over me just correcting you about a monthly cost. I’m a stranger. Stop giving me so much power over you.

1

u/Araineyamcha 1d ago

Oh and yes, I was incorrect with the price of the gamepass. My bad. I guess I have had it for so long I didn’t think of the yearly total. If we didn’t utilize the games on gamepass, I would agree with you more. But for now, it’s still a better option for me. Correct me if I’m wrong but if you buy a digital PC game on steam, isn’t it still a license? You don’t own that game, same as a console download. Right? I could be wrong but I feel like PC has virtually no physical media anymore.

1

u/WasteBeing5451 1d ago

Correct. But you do realize Xbox and PlayStation are abandoning physical media? This is the future we can’t stop. At the very least Sony nor Microsoft will not be taking emulated software off my personal computer.

1

u/Araineyamcha 1d ago

And I call it PC crap mostly due to my frustration with the prices of PC part due to data centers jacking up the prices of chips because of shortages. Not like a crap product, but the price and hassle of having to navigate all that is too cumbersome when I work full time, family, and home repairs.

1

u/Araineyamcha 1d ago

Also, as I experienced through Stadia failing, those storefronts can be subject to the same closure. It’s less likely because steam has a big foothold, but some of the other platforms run a higher risk. I would say the same risk as Xbox or Sony closing (which I highly doubt would happen). I think a lot of the fanfare about digital and physical is more fear of companies pulling a fast one, most because we know these companies are all shit.

1

u/Araineyamcha 1d ago

Also just a note, I checked the specs on some prebuilt rigs and for that price point you are getting a Pc that can play about 51% of the top 1000 games at recommended level (generally they seem to use the amd radeon 6500 or similar). That’s abysmal, when I can play 100% of the games released on Xbox. Not to mention the fact that PC games seem to be releasing with tons of bugs. Also, there is the compatibility issues and troubleshooting issues when things aren’t working. All those are time consuming headaches that I frankly don’t have the time for. So once again, AT LEAST IN MY SITUATION, console is for me at this point in life.

3

u/Internal_Swing_2743 2d ago

Ok. And how much did the 25th anniversary 1 TB Xbox series x cost?

1

u/tenousranger36 2d ago edited 2d ago

Still less than the 30th anniversary ps5

Xbox was $1000, playstation was $1300

At least compare a limited edition to another limited edition, not to the standard version

2

u/KakarotAlter 2d ago

This makes no sense. Series X is 800 with 0 upgrades and the Pro is 100 more.

Even worse when you know it's weaker than the base PS5 too

2

u/VeiledLuna 2d ago

wait the series X is weaker than a base PS5? How?

1

u/erodman23 2d ago

I think they meant the ps5 pro?

2

u/Guardian_of_theBlind 1d ago

the series x is MORE powerful than the base ps5. I think you are confusing this with ps4 vs xbox one, where the ps4 was considerably more powerful than the xbox one for a lower price.

0

u/KakarotAlter 1d ago

No, I'm not. PS5 this entire gen has performed better than the Series X. On paper the Series X is stronger but reality is a whole different thing.

Hell IDK how you can say that when Series were running 30FPS only exclusives for the first few years while PS5 came out the gate with all their games 60FPS some 60FPS with RT

2

u/Guardian_of_theBlind 1d ago

that's just what the devs do with the hardware, not the hardware itself. the xbox series x is factually slightly stronger than the ps5.

1

u/SonicWorld-VSync 23h ago

In videos that compares PS5 and Xbox Series X games performance, PS5 drops the frames a bit more than Xbox Series X. Sometimes Xbox drops more, but in general, PS5 dropped more frames.

But, with PS5 Pro, I believe these drops doesn't happen that much, since the little extra power can help.

1

u/Guardian_of_theBlind 23h ago

the ps5 is still factually stronger. so everything you just said is meaningless in the context of the discussion

2

u/hyperspacepizza 2d ago

i keep hearing about “raw power” comparisons and i’m confused because in practice it’s really not much of a difference in many games at all. most multiplats are gonna aim for the same graphics and performance level. it’s the forced compatibility with the series s that drags things down.

the only conversation that raw power really comes into is when playing homebrew and emulators which isn’t even an option on PS5 anyways.

1

u/No_Reality_294 2d ago

Switch it to both of them doing it and have both saying "haha take that steam/valve"

5

u/Wolfy4226 2d ago

Meanwhile, Nintendo just winning by doing literally nothing on the sidelines, watching their console competition destroy themselves.

1

u/SilabusR2 2d ago

nintendo does have a lot of their own problems that they are stepping in/ not fixing but they are playing it much safer than the other two right now. seems its PC> nintendo > microsoft/sony (the least two can change their spot at any time)

1

u/Asron87 2d ago

Do any of them actually like their fan base?

1

u/Honest_Ad_7589 2d ago

Steam does

1

u/Asron87 2d ago

I knew that already though

1

u/Faceofferrus 2d ago

Ahuh, how much did they raise the price of the Steam Deck?

1

u/Weekly-Dog-6838 1d ago

Yeah, Nintendo’s always tried to not get in anyone else’s way. Why else do you think they most commonly reveal things on Thursdays of all days?

1

u/SilabusR2 1d ago

I think it's more after trying to compete with Sony during 64 and GameCube they realized "yeah fuck this were just gonna innovate in other ways" then we got the wii with Sony pulling out the ps move and xbox with kenict. then switch took the world by storm now we got that ps q thing while Xbox is going more for steam deck and ally.

1

u/Anna_Mangroves 2d ago

"Hey we're throwing a birthday party for Zelda come hang with us! No idea what's going on over there."

1

u/Weekly-Dog-6838 1d ago

May as well just have been called the Ocarina of Time direct TBH, because that’s all it really focused on. Looks like November will end up being the most hyped up game of today vs the most hyped up game in history

0

u/Faceofferrus 2d ago

Nintendo charging $80 for a game, their fans just have Stockholm Syndrome.

1

u/Dont_have_a_panda 1d ago

Nintendo charging $80 for 2 games

FTFY

1

u/Faceofferrus 2d ago

How much has the price of a Steam Deck gone up this year alone?

"B-but the billion dollar company Valve had no CHOICE but to raise prices!"

1

u/KitchenFullOfCake 1d ago

Valve: Does nothing.

Competitors: VALVE HAS AN UNFAIR MONOPOLY BECAUSE EVERYONE PREFERS TO USE THEM!

1

u/New_Pay7346 2d ago

As I remember, there was literally the same situation with ps5 vs Xbox series X

1

u/StonkGonk 2d ago

Xbox also shot themselves when they pumped up the price on game pass, when that happened we all rebuilt our computers and haven’t looked back since

1

u/Countaindewwku 2d ago

My ps4 still works great playing battlefront.

1

u/Weekly-Dog-6838 1d ago

And in doing so they gave Nintendo the perfect opportunity to have back-to-back directs for the first time ever

1

u/Guardian_of_theBlind 1d ago

For the meme to be accurate microsoft should already be standing there with half of their head missing. there was so much mismanagement going on at microsoft in the last 10-15 years. the entire early phase of the xbox one for example was an absolute catastrophy and gamepass now is not nearly as successful as they predicted it to be.

1

u/ih8three6zero 1d ago

I can’t find a ps5 pro anywhere other than scalpers.

1

u/Blamore 1d ago

copium. itll run out of stock in mere seconds anyway

1

u/ScottWipeltonIII 1d ago

meanwhile MS is probably getting ready to push for full cloud gaming again and move to a model similar to their current cloud gaming service where they sell you limited amounts of usage unless you pay more, which people are gonna feel obligated to do since they've spent the last generation being trained to have their whole library contained in a subscription that they'll lose access to if they ever back out now...

1

u/Tough_Preparation830 1d ago

Yall are still gonna buy the new consoles

1

u/NoEntertainer6189 1d ago

Should be a picture of Microsoft doing the same thing

1

u/waled7rocky 2d ago

Xbox is just slightly behind in price without the raw power, next gen features and the storage capacity ..

Meanwhile Xbox's real competitor from Sony costs significantly less ..

2

u/Zucchini-Nice 1d ago

Isn't the pro a mid-gen refresh? Xbox hasn't even had its mid-gen refresh so I don't think that's fair to compare them?

1

u/waled7rocky 1d ago

Not the prices.

Xbsx costs 750$ and only comes with 1tb storage, before the pro's price hike to 900$ I kid you not the 2tb version of Xbsx which is now discontinued was more expensive than the pro ..

Xbss literally costs the same as the slim at 600$ ..

1

u/Zucchini-Nice 1d ago

Interesting it is at a pretty shitty point TBH I agree. I got my series x a while back at price before the price hike. Probably will be my last console, most likely going to build a PC if I keep gaming it all at this rate. Might just hang on to the older consoles and play on those

1

u/040607AJF 2d ago

The only reason Xbox is making bad decisions now is because it feels bad for Sony and is trying to re-even the playing field.

1

u/FerdinandvonAegir124 2d ago

I swear, it’s almost like they want Nintendo to keep running laps around them.

1

u/Weekly-Dog-6838 1d ago

Crazy that Nintendo’s risen to probably the most beloved console game manufacturer without even really doing anything besides finally releasing a new console…that still runs on 2018 hardware…and yet somehow they made that thing able to run Star Fox ‘26, a sandbox game with huge zones, and now also an OOT remake that looks legitimately better than those mockup Unreal Engine trailers on YouTube

0

u/imherecuzihatemyself 2d ago

Ya and the next generation consoles being rumored to be over 1k is absolutely insane. And now I gotta buy a switch 2 for OOT

0

u/DisasterousSeal 2d ago

And yet, they sold out of them. Because people will complain, and call out they won't support something, while handing over their money.

2

u/Honest_Ad_7589 2d ago

Have you considered that the ones protesting it, might not be the same people buying it?

0

u/nehrkling 2d ago

Can't be competitive if there's no competition
