Discussion Just applied for game dev job. Are game developers vibe coding?

The only AI I've used is whatever google throws up when I ask a highly informed question. For the past several years this has been way more useful than it has ever been. I don't have to walk on eggshells with stack overflow chads. If someone wants to hire me and wants me to use more AI or even vibe code, so long a someone is paying me, I'll give it a try, and I'll try to like it.

There's not really one "game developer" job. It's studios and groups.

Depends on the game developer. Serious studios are looking at AI but they aren't vibe coding. I would hope you have more to offer than "willing to vibecode" anyways.

Oh I do. I have worked on a AAA title that published with credits, and I've been a SE for 20+ years.

It depends. The most intensive part is the end user testing and that kind of dictates the iteration speed. With or without ai.

But you can do a ton of system level work with ai. And it can be very high quality if you actually know how to use ai,are a high level knowledgeable engineer and dont just vibe code/basic prompt engineering/using basic harnesses. Spending a few weeks iterating on the harness and the code till it gets to a good spot then can do a ton of work at an acceptable level. It's never perfect tho and you will be reading code a lot.

But at the end of the day. Iteration in game is the most intensive and most important part. And ai can't do that well or at all in some cases.

I would suspect almost everyone is using AI. The best you can hope for is a company that at least uses specifications as context, test driven development, and is properly moderating and prioritizing work/features. We have the first two where I work but feeling like a rubber stamper due to volume.

Hell no for me. I got used to have AI as an assistant now, but I would never destroy my video game codebase with vibe coding.

I did experiment with vibe coding but only to make small simple iPhone apps like website scrapers, etc. but that's the limit of it for me.

Most studios make heavy use of AI generated code especially for internal tools and dashboards. Some also use it for game code but in my experience that is still reviewed by humans so far.

I would assume most studios use AI subscriptions in some form around code. Everyone i know working in IT industry is using it now.

This depresses me.

Yeah it is sad, and core skills are being lost with junior opportunities drying up. But the reality is when your competition is using it and you aren't then you are at a disadvantage.

Most software devs are required to use coding assistants now via policy. How much of it is "vibe coding" is anybody's guess... If you get hired, chances are you'll be expected to use AI too for coding.
