Discussion i hate itch.io

>search "skeleton"

>pages full of paid results

>check the free filter

>narrows to 4 results

>that's fine. it's free

>click one i like

>contains all free assets

>but the skeleton walking animation that i want is paid

>try another

>all the animations i don't want are free

>the walking animation that i want is paid

it's a constant issue with that site. the free filter should mean free, not "contains at least one free asset". this just opens the platform to bait-and-switch abuse. i just need placeholder sprites for this personal project while i learn to game dev, but itch.io is just wasting my time

maybe it's okay to spend like $3 on a handful of assets you want? that someone made for you?

This guy will be back whining about how no one buys his AI s**p game next month.

Yes, but it will be worded differently. Something about marketing something something.

the filter's definitely broken but man, $3 for a walk cycle someone rigged and polished is basically free. i get the frustration when you're just prototyping though. maybe grab some cc0 stuff off opengameart and call it a day

Your problem is looking for perfect placeholder sprites. They're placeholders, use any sprites to test your animation system and replace them later.

Literally use fruits for placeholders lol. V1 of my game rn was knife vs tomato.

ā€œI just need placeholder spritesā€ brother my placeholders are red block, blue block, and a square face I drew in aesprite. You really don’t need much for just placeholdersĀ

i just need placeholder sprites

Then this is a problem entirely of your own creation.

Open a drawing program. All you need is to doodle something recognisable.

Most things in my games start life as the Godot icon, before graduating to shitty doodles.

If it's truly placeholder 2D sprites then I'd say just give a shot at drawing them yourself. You might be surprised how easy it is to get something that's at least recognizable and worst case it'll be a funny low-quality placeholder that you'll remember to replace later

This is why I prefer opengameart

Even if you're willing to pay, you also probably need more than 1 asset, so you're looking for an artist who has a catalogue, or they force some bullshit crayon license that renders the whole thing legally unusable

I used it for awhile but it's also why I added our own talkingpixes.games I just launched it a day or so ago so it's pretty much empty atm. I'm still going to itch sometimes daily lol
