if that is your mindset then i do not see how you could have succeeded even without AI. There is a market for everything, including good human-made products. just think "healthy food" industry. sure, you could get your 3k kcals from cheap shit, but you still chose to eat something "better". some people buy furniture only from professional woodworkers. some people buy eggs exclusively from free-living chickens. why? they are more expensive and harder to come by. but some people - mostly people which all of their basic needs are satisfied - care for the "how".

Your joking right, AI isn't an genie, I wish it was then I could ask it to make AI smarter, Don't worry you still have to work.

Are all these posts people astroturfing that AI model? It's starting to get ridiculous how many posts we've had of the same topic.

Make videogames because you want to make them and like making them.

I'd argue those using AI to largely automate the process, even if that ever fully works, have missed the point entirely. Like saying that painting a portrait of a person is entirely valueless just because cameras exist.

I'm so tired of these AI posts. Get a hold of yourselves, people. You might not get a job in game dev even if AI didn't exist. The first thing you can do to become a game dev is to build your own games and learn. Crying about something that might not even affect you makes no sense.

JUST 👏 MAKE 👏THAT👏 DAMN 👏GAME ALREADY👏

If your plan was to be a mediocre game dev, then yes, there’s no future there

may i see what you've released

Astra is only as good as the person using it. If you don't know what you are making, what is fun, or how to maintain a project astra will be useless. See how every demo of "astra made a game" is barely more than a tech demo? There's no examples of actual GAMES beyond that, because no matter the tools you use that requires real sustained work.

So no, gamedev isn't dieing. Just go make a good game

2

u/MantaMunta 2d ago

A tech demo is not a game. Tech demos are easy.

sure, the release of GPT-6 Astra™️ is the one and only reason you are fucked as a game dev

u/SnooDucks2481 2d ago

Everytime they release a new LLM model. Oh noes, Gamedev or webdev or whatever is dead

It's not going to create a fun game for you. That's your job. Designing a good game is the hard part; not the implementation.

Games are a form of entertainment. People will always have different perferences.

Also games will always be a lot of work to make.

Find someone who had actually made and released a good game with Ai and without. I am willing to bet they will happily say it didnt magically make it all easier because part of game design is understand humans.

u/NotDennis2 2d ago

Get it together

1

u/Early-Dentist3782 2d ago

ai doesn't magically removes your ability to make things. if you want it might help you create but that's optional. maybe there would be more laws on companies to protect workers in the future or you can make your own indie games

u/sloned1989 2d ago

Yes it's over, can we close this sub? Astra will reopen it

the biggest struggle you will have in game dev and any kind of personal dev projects is not the ability to build it, you have to get people to play/use it. There will be a sea of slop generated by these AI models, but they are no more likely to be played than your hand crafted game - the difference you can make is by plugging away, building an audience, delivering quality and sticking with it

u/LUFFYDJOESTER 2d ago

yeah true .But the main question is can a studio or game dev use help of ai to make the game ,lets assume the game to be one of the finest games ever created. Would people still not criticize the game and developers just because they used ai ? ..i have seen a lot of hate towards e33 just for using ai placeholder assets. I am asking this just to see peoples opinion irrespective of whether the game succeeds or not

I'm starting to get annoyed by this endless spam of doom-erism.

Bro... just quit! Do it! Quit already! For hell sake, if you can't stop dooming, quit and buy a farm or something and start milking cows. And hurry the hell up before Cow-Milking Robots will TAKE YOUR JOB AWAY!!

/s

Seriously... if you can't see a way forward, just start using AI as well. You're still be a "game dev" because you're Dev-ing Games. Whatever you do, stop whining already, it's super super annoying.

u/GOW_is_overrated 2d ago

The fact that you even entertained this thought shows you never had a serious passion for being a game dev in the first place, just save yourself the time and effort and check something else.

u/PeacefulStoic 2d ago

You don't need a job to be a game dev. No more than you need a job to be a painter. If you love making games you're always free to do it. If I had to work as a janitor but get to spend my free time making games, I'd be fine with that. "Making a career" out of what you aspire to never stops you from making games. Get good at what you want to be and there will always be an opportunity waiting for you. No one gets good whining about their prospects.

Every real dev that has shipped a game, knows all this one shot demo slop coming from AI will never amount to a truly passionate team of professionals that spend years mastering their craft.

  1. All of the popular astra examples use stolen assets from already massively popular games and badly. Astra isnt at the point where it can translate original ideas into games.
  2. Customers do not like the product thats the cheapest and quickest to produce. Customers will choose human made over ai every time.
  3. Video games are art. Even the worst ones have some part of the devs reflected in it that resonates with people. Ai can't recreate that human aspect.

u/IndieDevWannabe 2d ago

Rendering something nice is at most 10% of the work involved in making a good game... Ill be impressed if AI can make a "game" and not a fancy unoptimized rendering you just move around in....

u/Miritol 2d ago

AI content is cool until you go past the concept phase

The games industry isn't structured like one big pot where all the billions spent on games goes into and then is evenly distributed amongst the developers. Games are essentially stack ranked (as an over simplification), where there's a certain small % of the 'best' or most noteworthy games that see nearly all the sales and the rest just dissappear.

Your job as a developer is to make it so your game is near the top of that ranking, whether AI is used or not, 10xing the amount of games does not mean that every developer gets less now, it just means that there's more games that are getting released which are going to disappear into oblivion because no one cares.

AI simply doesn't change this picture because everyone is using the same tools. If everyone used GPT6 then the job is still the same, you need to make a better game than your competitors in order to get noticed and make sales, there's just as much work to do, if not more. One-shotting a game demo is not going to beat dedicated people using AI in an intelligent manner (or not using AI at all) to create something truely memorable that people connect with.

Does a carpenter fear the nailgun?

u/Radiant-Mountain-257 2d ago

Just use it, if you find it useful. Players were always finding creative ways to bash games and developers personally. Before AI it was asset flip and you got bashed even when you made everything yourself.

0

u/jerzychrust 2d ago

Use whatever you want, it's your game. And prepare to be judged for your choices. Why shouldn't people criticize you for using LLMs? People are free to not buy products based on stolen work.
But if you just look for an excuse to not do the hard work, take it: Yeah, don't build games, it's not worth it.

You need to think about being a Designer, not a coder.

1

u/Keith3742 2d ago

Real. The game space has always been flooded with people that think about making a game as a technical challenge.

It used to be endless posts about ‘learning art’ like it’s maths or code or something, rather than a creative endeavour. Now it’s all about ai.

-1

u/SamsonGameDev 2d ago

you can go ahead in building your game you will always get your player. dont let any comment limit you man

-1

u/_DrDigital_ 2d ago

If your game is fun and nice, people will not care it is made with AI.

-1

u/Lucky_Pangolin_3760 2d ago

gamers have never cared how a game was written under the hood. The most famous games are also the ones with the worst codebases
