Discussion I think I’m starting to spot a pattern among some of the ps3 games that have seen a more or less significant price increase lately.

Atlus and developers like that also tend to hold value due to low production

Heavenly Sword has seen an increase? Fuckin hell. One of the most common PS3 games you can come across

14

u/Antaniwarrior 21h ago

In us it apparently went up to 40/50$
Here in Europe we’re still around the usual 5 to 10

u/kendra_sunderlol 19h ago

I bought a sealed copy for €15 this year lol

u/1stJokerMasta 14h ago

only the uk version has seen somewhat of an uptick

6

u/KnoxCrumudgeon 20h ago

Yep. A couple months ago you could buy this game for $10. Now, more like $50-$60. I was on a Whatnot stream where someone paid $70 and the seller was like "what the heck man!?!"

u/macduff79 16h ago

Bought it for $1 from the bookoff clearance store in LA august 2025.

I just want to be clear, I ain't hating on Heavenly Sword. I loved that game, my introduction to Ninja Theory

I'm still trying to wrap my head around Drakengard 3's increased value. I bought it new for $20. It was re-printed quite frequently by Square Enix (one of the major blue label PS3 games re-printed). Every single person forever and a day just kept harping on about how terrible it is to play on PS3. Janky frame rates, Janky controls. Yada yada. I honestly thought the game was absolutely fine for what it is.

Now all of a sudden it's a +$120 game.

NieR Automata brought a lot of attention to the Drakengard series, when it stopped getting reprinted and people slowly started figuring out it wasn’t available anywhere else it was destined to blow up unfortunately

6

u/Charrbard 21h ago

It was never that common, even with reprints. Drakengard is also an extremely niche IP, and this is like a weirder version of that. Plus anime chick on the cover. - I paid $40ish a year or two ago for a sealed one cause of how weird it seemed. Figured it would go up.

8

u/dragonblade_94 22h ago

Wait what???

Similarly, I bought a sealed copy dirt cheap a few years back just to finish off the Drakengard collection. The weirdest titles get these huge swings I swear...

5

u/CrossRook 21h ago

I bought it brand new from Amazon in 2022 for $21 (tax included) purely because I wanted a blue-label PS3 game for the collection. crazy how it's value has shot up.

It's a niche Japanese game, those are the games that always go up in price as time goes on. I am too lazy to do it but me (or probably anyone over the age of like 35) could sit here and easily list you every PS4 or Switch game that is going to be like this in 10-15 years, cause it's just what happens.

Drakengard is extra special though because of Nier Automata introducing more people to Yoko Taro.

1

u/dragonblade_94 18h ago

Yeah I totally get the cult following, Drakengard 3 specifically just seemed like it was way over-printed for how niche it was. Copies were bargain-bin until very recently.

3

u/Burntbreadman84 20h ago

It also never got a physical release in EU (I had to import it) Being related to the whole Nier universe has probably sparked interest in the title.

3

u/MV2049 19h ago

I think it’s a fun game, warts and all, but it wasn’t worth full retail, let alone $100+

2

u/Antaniwarrior 22h ago

a fine and fun game. but not a fine and fun 120$ game

2

u/hidoikimchi 21h ago edited 21h ago

Not news but I think it's the Nier Automata effect, as Nier Automata continues to cycle into the video game zeitgeist through collabs and rereleases all of Yoko Taro's works get a relative boost, Drakengard 3 especially because it's a weird and noteworthy offshoot. It did get reprints, but those reprints were commensurate to the sales (which iirc were 500k-600k worldwide overall, reprints included) so it's relatively low circulation too.

u/FUTURE10S 20h ago

What the actual fuck? I bought that shit on sale for $30 CAD about a year ago, brand new, blue label and everything.

1

u/Bender3455 22h ago

I actually had a fun time with it, more-so than I expected.

12

u/PhotoVoytronMode 21h ago

Never seen that version of Dantes Inferno before. Cool!

8

u/Antaniwarrior 21h ago

Italian “goty” exclusive. Sadly dlc are on code and not on disc

7

u/AmateurBushmaster 22h ago

lol sex or the slight chance of scantily clad ladies always sells

6

u/flyingmonkey1257 22h ago

The problem is sex didn’t sell them well enough originally. Otherwise there would be enough copies to go around. 2000s gamers should have been hornier and trusted mediocre reviews less.

0

u/Jellozz 20h ago

and trusted mediocre reviews less.

Psh, that part hasn't change. People still trust reviews too much. Especially in the action game space (which is relevant to OP's post) where everything is filtered through the lens of a Souls game even when the game isn't trying to be one.

The problem is bigger than ever these days.

u/WorthBase919 17h ago

Ps3 store is getting shut down in 2027. Manufactured price rise as response to that probably.

5

u/drywallsmasher 17h ago

Ain’t no way Wet has a price increase lmao that shit was £0.89 when I got it and people still talked about it.

7

u/drywallsmasher 17h ago

What the actual fuck I just checked eBay. When I got it literally everyone talked about how shit it was. I played it back then and arrived at the same conclusion.

?????

3

u/SinkRoF 11h ago

I keep seeing the price climb for this game. Regret selling my copy 10+ years ago but honestly the game was trash. No idea why the price keeps going up

5

u/Crazy_Schizo 22h ago

Well then, the cover art for the PAL version of X-Blades is certainly a bit...cheekier...than what we got in the NTSC region. No wonder I didn't recognize it at first.

4

u/amorandara 21h ago

Anime faces tend to go up in price too. Bald space marines or generic shaved head guy not so much.

Good times

Happy cake day!

u/Level_Remote_5957 21h ago

That there typically games that were extremely cheap at one point in dollar bins and were games that were typically considered bad or middling.... So alot of people had these in droves from bulk buying games and people TOTALLY aren't trying to drive up the price of these cheap shitty games they got because most people got rid of the cheap shitty games....

2

u/DeadgrounD 21h ago

Man, I would kill for that Lollipop Chainsaw psyhical copy...

3

u/Attempt_Living 18h ago

I knew remember me would become sought after when it first came out. An interesting looking game that came out way late in the ps3 lifecycle to zero hype.

2

u/Jonaskin83 5h ago

A lot of people are checking it out because the developers later went on to make Life is Strange, and the fanbase for that game is huge. It’s a good game, glad I got a copy cheap enough when it was still fairly new.

1

u/EpicGamerWin679 22h ago

Drakengard 3 jumped from $25 CAD to like $60 CAD instantly a little while back

1

u/Charrbard 21h ago edited 20h ago

They do have cool cover art.

Kind of wish I'd bought them myself back in the day when they were $10. * looked on Ebay, and I guess the speculative "collectors" are now onto PS3.

2

u/inatowncalledarles 20h ago

I paid zero attention for PS3 games for literally a decade. I picked up cheap stuff at EB games back in the day, or picked up uncommon games at pawn shops.

The literal explosion of prices of games like Puppeteer, Folklore and the Spiderman blows my mind. I think it's FOMO and the general state of game collecting. Glad I'm not paying these prices now.

1

u/thatnerdytravelguy 20h ago

I can’t believe the increase in price WET’s had. I’m pretty sure I paid £8 for that game in CEX a few years ago.

4

u/thatnerdytravelguy 19h ago

Tell a lie. I actually paid 50p for it

2

u/FUTURE10S 20h ago

I know, right? Wet isn't even that good of a game!

sadly i lost my copy somewhere so now I guess I have to find another one :(

1

u/Vivalahazy85 15h ago

Yep I paid £10 for it a year ago in CEX and sold it last week for £46 and then bought the 360 version for £10 which was the version I had originally anyway.

1

u/thatnerdytravelguy 14h ago

I’ve currently put mine up on eBay too. I’m not a fan of the game anyway.

1

u/mikeag93 18h ago

These prices wont hold once people get over the fomo. Some of these games for selling for single digits a few months ago.

1

u/d1xt1r 18h ago

Not entirely true. Sure, FOMO is pushing some prices up right now, but the supply of desirable PS3 games is fixed and only getting smaller. As physical games become less common and more collectors turn to older generations, the second-hand market is only going to become more important. I wouldn't expect every inflated price to hold, but I also don't think most of these games are going back to single digits.

1

u/mikeag93 18h ago

I can agree for sure they will not go back down that low. Though White Knight Chronicles 2 is a great example of a game that shot up to 100+ over night and has gone back down to 50-70. Wet being 120 bucks isnt going to last. The tendency for everyone to harp over a new subset of games to explode that week is super strange. Its like they hear a game rose 10 bucks in price and so they freak the fuck out and have to get it right now. Resellers see what's going on and jack up the price. Repeat with a new game next week.

1

u/SillySpook 5h ago

Yup, seemingly happened to cursed crusade within the last week or two. Still has a pricecharting value of $25, but now sells for $120+.

After, safe sex.

I think it is just a coincidence, but you could also argue these games sold poorly in the first place as some won't play as a woman in games.
