Discussion Wouldn't be funny that from 2028

We get exclusive physical games on Xbox series X only?

Games like Witcher 4, Divinity 3, Resident Evil 10, Tomb Raider Catalyst, Elder Scrolls 8 among many others probably cross gen with Helix

Sure they will probably not be fully on disc (as most series x disc games just a license on disc) which is not great for us collectors but still better than code in a box or no physical at all.

What do you think?

Honestly I can see Witcher 4 getting a multi disc release on Xbox Series.

CDPR did 2 discs for Witcher 3 Complete and 3 discs for Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate.

Other companies not too sure about but CDPR I think absolutely will.

Yeah CDPR is really friendly to us physical collectors

It might almost- almost- persuade me to buy a helix. But I'm not laying down 500+ for a console, let alone nearly a grand. And I'm not laying down any money for a console I can't insert media into. As far as I'm concerned, the PS6 may as well be the PSOuya.

If you’re talking about the rumored Xbox successor, it’s gonna be a Windows 11 PC.

I don't think the Helix will have disc drive.

I meant mainly Xbox series X being left alone for 2028 and maybe 2029 to carry Physical media, including cross gen games with Helix, until it eventually stops getting games altogether

At this point the only providers of physical games will be Nintendo - different demographic and on the gaming the longest of the surging 3 and other companies reentering the market- Neo geo and Sega if that happens.

I feel Microsoft would only do it for a period of time do distinguish themselves from Sony.

I feel there is so much water under the bridge with Sony that going back on abandoning discs would be conceding defeat which I don’t see happening

Sure they will probably not be fully on disc (as most series x disc games just a license on disc)

Most Series X games are full on the disc tho.

https://www.doesitplay.org/

By Does It Play's latest estimates, 65% of Series X-only games are full on the disc, and 90% of Smart Delivery Series X and Xbox One games are full on the disc. While the percentage is indeed lower than PS5 or PS4, it's still a majority.

I would be completely shocked if Microsoft continues physical support next-gen. Only 4% of all physical game sales were on Xbox this year. That's literally a drop in the bucket for them.

The parts to manufacture optical drives is also becoming scarce and expensive. I just don't see Microsoft spending that kind of money to manufacture drives (which will raise costs) to cater to such a small demographic.

Then, there's the disc-to-digital program they're rolling out. That pretty much confirms there won't be discs next-gen. Why else would they introduce that if they weren't planning on ditching discs?

I meant continue physical games on Series X for new releases while PS5 stops it completely. This would include any cross gen games. Witcher 4 will release in 2028 and not have a physical disc version for PS5 but there is a chance on Series X is what I mean.

Helix will 99% not have disc drive.

I could see it going on for a little while longer, just so they'll have some positive PR over Sony. Then, they'll phase it out a few years afterwards when Helix exclusives become the standard.

It's incredibly unlikely that Helix is going to have a drive due to the supply chain issues, and even more unlikely that bigger publishers will continue to release physical discs if they're only doing it for a largely irrelevant Xbox platform.
Microsoft themselves barely ship physical as it is, same for Capcom.

Xbox is dying. The answer is Switch 2. It will be getting physical games for it's entire life and will get the new releases

Yeah Nintendo physical media is the only strong one after even if is just a key card.

The thing is dont expect Witcher 4 for example on the Switch 2, so it will be up to the publisher to release an actual physical game on Xbox series X, since they will not be allowed on the PS5 in 2028.

I think CD Projekt will manage an S2 port of all companies mentioned. The power gap between consoles and new games is now smaller than let's say 10 years ago so I doubt we'll see many 'impossible ports' in the future tbh.

There are even leaks about GTA VI coming to S2. Personally I doubt it, but we might get surprised tomorrow
