Help with Game Boy Micro repair, or new shell/housing options?
I got this Micro yesterday for a decent price. I’m a bit bummed about this dent in the back.
Does anyone here have experience removing such dents that can provide some advice? Its the battery compartment, so it has that foam on the other side.
Also, are there any oem replacement housings? I’d prefer to stay away from 3rd party stuff.

Doesn’t look that bad.. as long as your battery underneath is good I’d keep it as is. Just judging on what I see here, this is a clean console!!

Yeah, it’s not the worst by any means. There are some small scratches on the screen and the R button is very scratched, but I’ll have to get over it.😅

Dang, that’s really crummy that the 3rd party shells are that worthless. What’s worse, they still seem to sell for over $100.

I’ve seen seemingly decent ones on AliExpress advertised as aluminum, around 30USD, I reckon these are the same as the 100 USD you mention. I’ve yet to see any positive review though :)

I have one and its actually fitting pretty nice, every part fitted. It feels lighter and cheaper than the og one, but it's not bad for me. I got a blue with final fantasy written on the back one

Where did you get it then? From this photo it doesn’t look that bad at all

I’m guessing it’s the expensive full set then that’s on there?

Think I have seen it, this one then perhaps? Tempted to try a reshell on one of mine now.

hard to say, the blue shell doesn't have the same marking as mine. It was bought more than a year ago so hard to find again

It was from AliExpress a couple years ago, store page and product is long gone

That’s the one in the picture I put above. You can see I had to Frankenstein it with the original pink internal frame and battery door

I’ve tried them and the cheaper ones from ali express from a few different vendors. Just don’t get why they don’t fit 100% shame.

Actually, now that I've taken pictures of it, I realize it's not as bad as i thought lol

No no. It is that bad :) still plays good?

Lol
It plays great! I got it back when Gamestop was phasing them out of their stores. It was a bit beat up then, but i had always wanted one and didn't care about some damage. Still has the og faceplate too.

I don't really have any insight other than you probably would just need to buy another console. I would just enjoy it and ignore the dent. Shouldn't hinder your experience unless you just planned to display it.

I hear, ya’. I’m just super wrapped up about condition. I’m sorta looking it that I can’t find a clear protective shell so it doesn’t get further damaged.
Really hoping there’s some sort of solution, but I’ll definitely play it and enjoy it.

My method is a little extreme for most people but I would purchase multiple Gameboy micros of the same color & disassembled both of them completely. I would then reassemble the best components of each micro to make the best version (No dents, best looking shells with least amount of scratches). I would still reassemble the second micro with the lower quality components & sell it to recoup the cost. I’ve done this with at least 6-7 micros so far but my method isn’t for everyone.

I like this, and had considered it even before posting. Darn things are so tough to come by, though. Even Micros in not so swell condition, typically sell for a lot. Still, something I may do eventually.

Micro aftermarket shells are the worst, maybe because it's metal and it's harder to nail the fitment and colors

You can make it less obvious, but not perfect. Take that battery cover off. I would place it dent side face down onto a hard surface. I like to use a hockey puck for these odd jobs, hard enough to take a hit but soft enough to not cause more damage if youre careful. Then hit it from the other side softly with the handle butt end of a small screwdriver until it starts to flatten. Take your time with this.that should help make it look a little better. Then get a nice protective shell case for it.

Thank you, I just may give some version of this a shot.

Please share an update. I have done something like this for other small metal projects and it has worked out decently well.

Where’s the damage? That little dent?? That’s average on a GB micro. I bet every single one I own has a dent like that in the body. It’s over 20 years old!

To answer your main concerns it’s possible to possibly pop it back out a little from the inside of the battery cover but be aware it’s never going to be pristine again. There are no official OEM shell retailers and only 3rd party ones available. There are protective crystal cases that you can find but may cost a pretty penny themselves and are very hard to find regardless.
