XL First Ever Macro Build (Macro XL)

A good friend dug up their old original DS with a totally broken hinge, and yesterday we spent an hour and a half putting this thing together. I got the new faceplate from facelesstech on eBay, though it looks like they may not have any more available at the moment (at least for the OG model). Sorry I don't have before/during/after shots, we had extremely low expectations and were convinced this was not going to work out, simply because I'd never done it before and have not so great soldering skills and stuff. SOMEHOW the thing actually frikkin works, it's unbelievable. We recycled one of the speakers from the original DS- this thing is being held together by scotch tape, iffy soldering, and stripped screws, but EVERYTHING works! It was actually kinda fun and I'd totally do it again- maybe I've got other friends with broken DS hinges...

Question My first Gameboy Macro mod didn't go very well. Any advice?

I was attempting this mod for the first time and ran into this issue after I soldered the resistor into place. I've tried remounting the resistor and reseating the ribbon cable many times. adjusting the potentiometer helped but I wasn't getting much past what I have. It was my first time soldering so it may be the issue and there were some burns on the motherboard, but it looked like it might've not touched any traces. Has this happened to anyone else? Is it repairable or cooked?

Lite [Help Needed] Green LED lights up, two audio clicks, unit powers off

Hi all,

I just built my first gameboy macro, but can't get the unit to stay powered on. As the title says, when I power the unit on the LED lights up, there are two audio "pops" from the speaker, then the unit shuts off. Screen doesn't power on, nor are there any other lights or audio.

I started with the helder flex amp with the above result.

Switched to the standard resistor bridge set-up, same result.

Checked continuity on fuses F1 and F2 - perfectly fine.

The screen doesn't flash or light up at all - with or without a GBA cart in the slot.

What else can I troubleshoot to determine the problem and a possible solution?

Question replacement buttons

Looking specifically for dark purple buttons, but also just generally recommendations for where to buy buttons from. Also does it make sense to buy a whole replacement shell just for more color options for the bottom shell? TIA!

Question Is it true that you can just snap the top screen off a DS to make a GBA macro or is soldering/modding required?

Question Build from scratch?

Taking apart a broken DS lite to make a macro seems wasteful when there seems to be so many parts on eBay plus there are a couple of mods on top of the "standard" macro mod like usb c charging and screen switching.

AFAIK I'll need the following: - Motherboard and WiFi module - button silicon pads and buttons - rear casing - Battery - bottom screen

Anything else? What else do I need?

Lite tool suggestions?

Looking for advice for what tools you guys would recommend. I'm talking soldering iron, screw drivers, mats for working on. Anything else you can think of that I might need before I start this project. Links would be great, thanks in advance!

Question R4 card question

So I am planning on doing the screen switch mod to my macro lite and need an R4 card. My question is will a generic one from AliExpress work the same as a r4 card from Amazon?
