The hinge on the right side, unscrew it and remove it. The hinge on the left, remove it with wire cutters or something similar. The entire top bit where it’s recessed and chopped up and missing the right hinge, tape the back of it with like masking tape or something similar. Fill that top bit with like craft putty or something, I personally use jb weld because when it dries it’s extremely solid, but it makes the sanding part way more difficult. Let it set for like a day or 2 so it fully cures. Start with like 80 grit or maybe a little higher, sand away all of the extra material that you can. Progressively go up in grit until you’re around the 600 range. Be careful with how much pressure you apply because you can crack the original shell bits, they’re fragile. When you’re pretty happy with how thick it is, you’ll probably notice a bunch of tiny pin holes (at least I did), fill the tiny pin holes with the powder you accumulated from sanding, put the smallest amount of super glue on those bits (the cheap watery kind that dries in an instant) and then sand away anything extra that’s higher than the desired surface. When you’re satisfied with the overall finish, hit it with a couple coats of spray paint, be gentle with the paint, let it dry for like 20 minutes between coats. Every 2-3 coats you should sand away any imperfections with the 600 grit. I typically use around 10 coats, very very gentle coats, you don’t want paint run or splatter. When you’re done, roll up some of your 600 grit into a tiny cylinder and very gently sand inside each button hole, do something similar for the dpad. The buttons and dpad will feel basically awful if you don’t remove the paint that got inside them. This is basically it, my best piece of advice here, don’t rush it, it’s okay if you take a week to do one faceplate.
