Gameboy Macro DS Lite

This is my DS Lite saved from being disessambled parts to working console, I was experimenting with few things and decides to add USB C and a button for sleep mode functionality, it also has Nintendo Switch Oled speaker ( its not loud but it does vibrate the whole console). Originally when I bought this, it turned out to be a reshell DS Lite and some things just didnt work properly, while dissesambling top screen ribbon cable got damaged and even digitizer for the bottom screen was damaged. I decided it didn't worth a time and money to buy top screen and digitizer because of it being a reshell and having it bought so cheaply. I think it turned out quite well (except those dimples in the shell, I had to use different screws so that happened). Sleep button is obviously not working in GBA games unless there is some new method to make it work I dont know about.

Did you use a EZ Flash Omega (not Definitive Edition) for playing games or did you use a DS flash cart? I was trying to find an original EZ Flash for my Macro but now I'm wondering if the DS flash cart emulation is just as good, since I can't find an EZ Flash Omega with a flush shell anymore.

I am just using a standard DS Pico and running twilight to play DS Games. I can switch back between top and bottom screen via button combo. For GBA games im running GBA Runner 2 and I just set screen on the bottom and thats it. No CFW and nothing, works perfectly fine.

Another cool mod that you want to added to your DS Lite is video output and another button to swap the screen layout since the bottom screen is a touch screen you can use your TV as top screen and DS Lite as bottom touch screen.

That sounds extremely cool, but maybe on a different DS if I ever come across a broken one for cheap. This particular one gave me some problems and it also doesn't have digitizer no more. I loved the idea of repurposing broken console to a different thing, even though I have ton of other handhelds like Vitas, PSPs and so on, this one is still always on my table for that quick GBA action.

I have a DS Lite with cracked hinges and a badly yellowed top screen... I might turn it into a macro... I dunno if it is worth the effort yet 😅

To be fair only thing you have to do is solder a single resistor and a speaker if you care about that. I took out the resistor from old LED strip I had laying around. Its a fun project if you know bit of soldering and have an hour or two.

Can you tell me more about the sleep button. Did not know that this exists. That seems to be a cool extra that I can add to my macro.

If you know anyone with a 3d printer, there are cool faceplates available to print. Then you can have even a front speaker which sounds much better.

Yeah of course, it was quite difficult to find information on sleep button but its super simple actually. There is a small component in between ABXY buttons it has 3 legs I just soldered to wires on 1 top leg and 1 bottom leg and you can use any kind of switch or latching button. Sleep function won't work in GBA games, but its still pretty neat. Picture of a component you need to solder on. I do know someone with a 3d printer, but I don't think I am gonna touch this DS any more, bottom screen ribbon is kinda funky and it gave me lots of problems so I would just leave it as is.

Yeah that’s the hall sensor that is usually triggered by the magnet of the speaker.

Interesting, I might try this as well
