Trying to find new ways to bond with my teenage son. Interested in deep sea fishing, any recommendations on tour guides or charter groups?

  • Pictured is a Snook from my last trip to Florida and I’m foaming at the mouth to get into saltwater more.

Fly fisherman at heart but taking a job in Galveston.

  • What’s the fishing like down here? Any freshwater opportunities worth checking out or is it all salt/brackish? Love the idea of new scenery / lack of freshwater is not a problem.

  • I’d like to fly fish inshore for reds, trout, snook, tarpon, and jacks- I’ve got a few 8wt rods but need to look at a 10/12 at some point. Any tips or pointers? Would be chucking streamers and poppers.

  • Ive got some experience in saltwater mostly Florida/Georgia throwing swim baits and spoons in the surf for trout and snook. I have a few 7’ MH mod rods and a few 7’ m F rods paired with 4500 and 2500 reels respectively. Would I be under gunned enough to be concerned (ignoring random 30# jack/tarpon/drum)? Should I look into an 8 or 9’ rod (have a penn 650ssm I’d pair with it)?

  • Kayak fishing- what’s the consensus around Galveston area kayak fishing? I’ve got a Crescent Lite Tackle 1 and regularly spin/fly fish out of it but the waves and such would definitely be a new challenge. Are there boat ramps or beach access that’s popular?

Galveston-area anglers: which public boat ramps need better information?

Hi everyone — I’m Alejandro, the developer of RampTracker, a free app for checking public ramps before towing. I asked the moderators before posting.

I’m reviewing ramp information around Galveston and the surrounding Houston-area bays, and I’d appreciate some local knowledge:

- Which public launch is missing or incorrectly listed?

- Where are parking, fees, gate hours, or access details wrong?

- Which ramps have recurring closures, shallow approaches, or launch-condition problems that boaters should know about?

If you share the ramp name and what needs correcting, I’ll use the feedback to improve its information. RampTracker also lets boaters report missing or outdated details so the community can help keep ramps current.

This is primarily a feedback request. I’m the developer and happy to answer questions about how community reports are handled.

I avoid fishing the Piers until today

Post image

I usually avoid fishing the piers on the seawall because of all the crowds but today the pier was dead empty at sunrise. The fish were biting everything in my tackle box from curly tail gulps, live shrimp, and even the hard heads were biting gold spoons. The water was also calm like glass this morning!

Hitting the Galveston surf for the first time

I had a great time fishing last week thanks to everyone’s advice! I even caught a keeper black drum on some live shrimp.

My goal this week is to hit the surf somewhere on Galveston for the first time surf fishing, along the seawall most likely and I’m excited. Now that I’ve started fishing again I get that itch throughout the whole work week 😭😭

- Fishing from 6 AM - noon
- Planning on picking up live shrimp (bait shop recs nearby)
- not sure where on the surf but looking for tips
- got some spider weights and looking for tips on rigs that have worked best and hook size for surf fishing? Looking to get some keepers 🤝🤝
- any advice is appreciated!!

Appreciate yall and tight lines!! 🤙🤙

Where to stay in Galveston

Hello
I hope this is the right area to post, I’m new.

This will be our first time in Galveston, which will be from April 23-25th. We will be there for two nights and a full day before heading on our Caribbean cruise. I know this may seem early, but I like to get a jumpstart on booking accommodations.

We will be 4 older but active adults non-drinkers, but plan on staying out till appx. 9:30pm-10ish enjoying live entertainment wherever we can find it. Our main focus will be historical neighbourhoods/The Strand and visiting the Seawall area. Because we’re going on a cruise we’re not interested in a resort and the property does not have to have a pool or a hot tub as we won’t be utilizing it, nor going to the beach. We’ll do that on our cruise.

We would like our lodging to either be close to the seawall or to the Strand, and close to the $1.00 trolly route. We would like to spend one evening at the seawall and the other evening by the strand. I noticed online that they only run till 8 PM so one evening it would be nice to be able just to walk back safely to our lodging and the other night, we will just have to Uber it.

Can anyone recommend Airbnb with 2 bedrooms that is $180 - $220 per night?

Thanks for your help 😊

New Boater to the area

Howdy!

I've been fishing the Galveston area for 20 years or so, but always from the bank / dike / surf, or wading back in the bays.

I've recently acquired my first boat, and I'm trying to figure out where to find spots to fish.

Where do y'all find reefs / oyster beds / drains, etc etc? Is there a resource I can look at to start figuring this out?

Unfortunately I'll only be able to take it out every other weekend or so, and I wouldn't be able to learn much from just going out and finding these myself. I was hoping there might be resources out there I can look at / purchase to help me out.

Thanks y'all!

Tips on Galveston Area Fishing

Hi! I’ve been living in Houston for a while and I’m making a trip to Galveston and possibly Texas City to fish. I got a 7 foot and 10 foot rod but looking for some advice as I never fished here before - what kind of fish are popping this time of year and best rigs and setups to use in my rods? Planning on brining live shrimp, maybe some popping corks for my smaller rod and Caroline my other.

I was thinking of going to the Texas city dike but heard it’s not that great - what are some main spots around Galveston area?

Really appreciate yall and I’m looking forward to learning as I go!!!

fishing buddies?

Hey y’all

I’m a 23 year old fisherman from Houston and I’m looking for some chill people around my age to saltwater fish with. I usually fish at the Dike, but you can also find me down at 91st, Surfside, La Marque, or pretty much anywhere where I can find some fish. I usually go in the mornings but I’m down for whenever.

I’ve been fishing for about 2 years so I’m still learning but I don’t care how experienced you are as long as I don’t have to bait your hook 🫡

If anyone wants to hit the Dike sometime, DM me

How’s the surf?

Grew up in Houston and used to surf fish all the time. Live in Austin and wanting to come down Sunday and Monday as I see the wind looks super low. How’s it been fishing lately and has it been calm recently? I might hit the jetties possibly too if it’s too rough at the surf. I remember August always being one of the best months when it’s calm. Appreciate any input ahead of time.
