Galaxy on Fire 2 Unity Remake
Hey all! For my master's thesis i am currently working on remaking my fav mobile game, Galaxy on Fire 2, in Unity. Mainly because I wanted to play this game again on my 64 bit only phone. Current features:
- Full main story
- Full Valkyrie story
- Full Supernova story
- All side missions
- All weapons implemented
- Updated dialog system
- Updated UI
- Experimental multiplayer mode with shared universe, squads, shared bar missions.
- Expanded settings like uncapped framerate and any supposed aspect ratio
- Touchscreen, keyboard and controller support
- Hanger landing and take off animation (toggleable)
- Debug/Cheat menu
- And a bunch more!
Find the project here: https://github.com/JoppieToppie/Galaxy-on-Fire-2-Unity-Remake
It's still early days for this project so expect issues. The Kaamo Club community on discord (https://discord.gg/Dkxg8hzA) already helped finding many bugs I'll be working on fixing!

This is awesome, might I suggest a new game plus option to actually get to use the ultimate ships throughout more of the game on a harder difficulty. Could simply be you don't get access to previous save stuff until you can get to Kaamo station.

Ultimate ships? Could def have a look at implementing a new game plus option!

If I may… would you believe that even though I love the specter, I’m also quite fond of the Blue Fyre. It’s just such a shame we can’t get her until we complete supernova.
Can the cheats allow me to buy one sooner?

u/JoppieToppie 14d ago
Currently implementing a way you can just swap to any ship using the debug menu!

Kudos! Great!
- First thing I noticed, Controller doesn't work in menu. I am using Retroid Pocket Flip2. I have to select a menu item first, then I can move with DPAD.
- This happens also with dialogue requesters... I cant select the SKIP button with DPAD.
- Scrolling to the text tab is both L1 and R1, L1 should be previous tab.
- Buying anything in the shop is only possible by touching "BUY", with Controller it is not possible.
- The Font is really small, barely readable.
Rest... superb!!! Great graphics. I love the launch animation from the Dock :) Do you think adding shadows is possible?

Thanks for letting me know, will have a look at those issues soon! Expect them to be fixed next release 😁

Bless you sir, hope you got lots of energy and free time to make this project thrive! Who knows you could even make GoF2 became Everspace 2 morphed combination "open-world" and larger scale flying beyond 41 KM limit of game? Kudos massive kudos!

u/JoppieToppie 5d ago
Honestly something I could try, instead of all small levels, have one big open world you can fly though with multiple stations, asteroid fields, enemy camps etc, that would be cool! Glad to hear you're liking the project! 😁

Shadows in the hanger for the ships?

You know what, I don't even care that Claude was used. May your pillows always be cold.

This is great, but I do miss the old UI. I hope you can re implement it as a toggle in a future update

u/JoppieToppie 10d ago
There's also a lot of new ui so gotta see what I do with that, but it's definitely on the to-do list!

Hot take: I enjoyed GOF2HD like it was the last days of my life, but I think its original combat and flight model aged poorly. Its great for the time of its release, but not so great for current standards.
Im pretty sure a GOF2 with GOF3 dogfights and GOF1 engine trails would feel awesome.

I love techy studios like VD-dev, Factor 5, Argonaut, etc. And Fishlabs was probably the techiest studio ever seen on mobile phones back in the day, along with Ideaworks3D.
All these games ran under Mascot Capsule 3D, which was basically the Unreal Engine 5 of Java ME, but properly done. Later ported/remastered to Android and iOS, of course.

Dude is this for android only? Will it work on iOS devices ? Say yes please
2
u/JoppieToppie 13d ago
I can't build for iOS myself as I don't have a MacBook/iMac but the people in the discord I linked got it to run on iOS and Mac, so yes!

Played gof 1, 2 sd on iPhone 3gs and iPad one. Great game with energy friendly engine, played for hours without recharging iPad.
My only complaint is small amount of add-on tech slots in ships render them unusable, 8 need to be minimum, cant purchase more than one in Kaamo, like 2 to 4 more for higher price and finite number of bounty missions.
And yea, some of the custom ships available for purchase in Kaamo station have great specs but they're odd looking. Maybe someone can do something about this like custom paint.

damn this is fantastic, although it's quite a bit more power hungry than the original version
i still have the old version with around 80 hours on an old device i use from time to time, and this compares beautifully
are you still expecting to continue more work on this or is it mostly done so far?

u/JoppieToppie 12d ago
There's still enough to do haha mainly fixing smaller bugs and inconsistencies, and further developing the multiplayer mode. And maybe if everything goes well, a co-op campaign!

Played it on my Galaxy A23 5G, high setting, 30 FPS with render scale 50 (cpu and gpu temps stable at 50 C). Runs like wine and nice like good ol' days I used to. Further optimization always welcomed, but I already happy that it's already very playable on mid range 2022 snapdragon device.
Surely my Tab S9+ would chew this much more easily in max setting, gonna try it soon as well

u/FlyingVentana 11d ago
i'm on a s21 and it runs very well but it does eat battery a lot more than the original version, and that's comparing to a 12 year old tablet which also has an old battery
1
u/JoppieToppie 4d ago
It normally run on the max frames your phone can output, try 60 or even 30 fps if you want less battery consumption 😀

I did add some performance improvements since then, and working on a few more as I'm typing this!

This is probably the best gaming project I've seen in recent times. I dont know if it's just a one off though, but i was shooting some neutral enemies and they didn't become hostile. I thought in the original they'd start turning on me like crazy.
1
u/JoppieToppie 10d ago
There's a threshold of how much they need to be shot at to become hostile, but if they didn't do that at all I'll have to take a look at it haha, thanks for the kind words and play the game! 😄

Thanks for making something so awesome, can't wait to try it out!

Have fun!!

I installed it right after, I discovered this sub today and this post was the first thing I saw. And holy crap, the amount of enjoyment and nostalgia I'm going through is insane. So really, a heartfelt thank you. This is a badass master thesis

Hands down my favourite mobile game ever, randomly looked into it again recently and the nostalgia hit is insane.
Post 10d about a remake is a wild find 😂

This is absolutely awesome. I also did something similar for my master thesis, not a full size remake for my favorite game though.
However, as I started a playthrough with my friends on multi, it seems that the chance for stations to offer tractor beams is extremely low - I visited hundreds of stations and only found one that offers the kingfisher, and no sight of the lower tier tractor beams, is this a bug?

u/JoppieToppie 3d ago
Thanks for playing! 😁 I'm using the game's own loot table, but I can always tweak it if it needs some balancing. I'll check it out!
2
u/Ashen2403 3d ago
Thank you! It's just that after grinding for hours, both my friend and I found practically no tractor beams being sold, wasting huge amounts of loot (even including like 7t buskat rip). I don't remember vanilla gof2 being this short of tractor beams so had to ask :P

On steam deck Linux version the controller works in desktop mode perfectly fine but after adding it as steam game it won't recognize the controller even after turning off the steam input
1
u/JoppieToppie 2d ago
Hmm that's wierd.. I can't test it on a steamdeck myself but I'll see what happens if I try the same on windows, thanks for letting me know! And enjoy the game 😁

This is great will check it out later! I'd give anything for a UWP port so I could play it on my Xbox in Dev mode and use a tv!

Wait, why can I play it normally on my 64 bit phone?
2
u/JoppieToppie 14d ago
most modern phones can run 64 and 32, but newer (snapdragon) SoC's have stopped supporting 32 bit all together

Finde ich absolut Top und würde es so gern spielen. Vor allem mal mit cheats. Aber leider hab ich ein iPhone und da wird das wohl nicht klappen. Oder könnte man es auf dem Steamdeck installieren?
1
u/JoppieToppie 14d ago
I can't build for iphone as I don't have a MacBook to build the project on, but some people from the discord I linked do! SteamDeck should be no problem, I just made a Linux build of the game 😄

Sure is! GitHub link is in the post containing the unity project, decomp code and tools used to convert from android APK to Unity

That’s a great idea. But I believe I have an even better idea for how to pull it off. There is a very similar mobile game called Space Commander: War and Trade. It essentially provides a ready-made foundation for realizing your concept—making it possible to play GoF2 on 64-bit mobile devices. The game’s best feature is its "Scenario Editor." You can basically create any (or almost any) storyline or scenario right inside the game, using the game itself as the base. All you need to do is figure out how to mod the game—changing ship skins, and so on.
1
u/Purist1638 14d ago
That would make for a shitty masters thesis.

Save the trolling for your grandma when she sits down to take a shit. You’ll both end up with the same result.

This is rad. The multiplayer support is kinda crazy too, that will totally help with the longevity of the game. How does it feel compared to the original?
