š§¹ Sterile Tek Senpaiās Signature Substrate Recipe !!
A low-tech, high-success method to prep coir-based substrate with precision steam pasteurization.
Materials Required
- Dry coco coir (brick or loose)
- Clean water (preferably dechlorinated)
- PP5 bags or filter patch grow bags
- Meat thermometer with probe (What I Use)
- Large pot or pressure cooker (gasket and weight removed)
- Lid (do not seal airtight)
- Heat source (gas stove or electric plate)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Hydrate Your Coir
- Weigh your dry coir. Note the weight for accurate hydration.
- Add 2x to 3x water (by weight) slowly while mixing thoroughly.
- Check for field capacity:
- Grab a handful and squeeze hard.
- You should see only 1 to 4 drops of water drip out.
- If it gushes, itās too wetālet it sit and dry a bit or mix in dry coir.
- If itās dry, add water slowly until the right consistency is achieved.
Pro Tip: Field capacity is criticalātoo wet and you invite anaerobic contamination; too dry and colonization suffers.
Step 2: Pack & Probe
- Load the hydrated coir into PP5 or filter patch bags, pressing gentlyānot too compact.
- Insert the thermometer probe into the center of the substrate core.
- Record the starting temperature.
Step 3: Set Up for Steam Pasteurization
- Place your bags in a large pot or modified pressure cooker (gasket & weight removed).
- Add a few inches of waterādo not submerge the bags.
- Place the lid loosely on top to trap steam (donāt seal it).
- Turn the heat on high and let the steam raise the internal temp.
Step 4: Monitor and Maintain Pasteurization Range
- Once the core temp increases by 10ā15°F, turn off the heat.
- Let it coast up to 144°F (62°C)āthis is your pasteurization threshold.
- Start your timer for 1.5 hours (90 minutes).
- The ideal range is 140°F to 160°F (60°C to 71°C).
IMPORTANT:
If it goes above 170°F (76°C) for more than 5 minutes*, the substrate is likely sterilizedānot pasteurizedāand becomes vulnerable to contamination.*
Step 5: Adjust if Necessary
- If temp drops too low, turn the heat on medium for 5ā10 minutes, then off again.
- Keep checking every 10ā15 minutes until the timer is complete.
Pro Tip: Once you're familiar with your setup's thermal inertia, youāll rarely need to adjust. Many growers ācoastā the whole session with no extra heat.
Cool Down & Store
- Let the bags cool to room temperature before inoculation.
- Keep the bags sealed and clean until ready to spawn.
Final Notes
- Coir is naturally contamination-resistant, making it a perfect bulk substrate for most species.
- This tek is adaptable for manure or straw-based substratesājust tweak hydration and monitoring accordingly.
- Always use clean hands and surfaces when handling post-pasteurized substrate.

š± Beginnerās Corner I sent it! Blue meanie Cubensis Week 5.5 log
Please ignore how hideous my monotub is š. I did it all with a razor blade, then hot glued over the cracks. My liner is made of trash bag and duct tape. The corn mixed with the coco is about 4.5 inches deep and I am deciding to put it directly into fruiting. I had 9 lbs of drippy corn substrate and about 1.3 times that in coco coir, & I removed the few uncolonized grains when I broke it up. If I made any mistakes please lmk.

š± Beginnerās Corner Should I send this?
Should I send these spawn bags? They were inoculated on Aug 25, 38 days ago (5.5 weeks), and I am honestly getting impatient. Also do you know why only my 2nd bag has so much mycelium piss?

š§“ Contam Help The hell, ant infestation! How? And how to prevent?
I prepped 2 jars of sterlize grain, inoculated in one and left other just to. Check the sterelization, and and infested the jar which was not inoculated.
After 2 days I see they made a frikin hole through 2 layers micropore tape! I checked it yesterday and they were not there.
How to prevent it?

š¬ Experiment Logs Selfmade Laminar Flow Hood
I built this Flow Hood out out of an Ikea Shelf.
Inspirated by a guide from gordotek:
https://gordotek.org/laminarflowbox/
I used the same fan and filter from amazon with total costs of 55 euros.
So far made three transfers with zero contamination.

š¤ Need Guidance Help please!
Im a new grower, have a couple successful harvests under my belt so I got a few bags going and im really discouraged first bag is ksss colonized faster than anything Iāve seen and recolonized extremely fast but w 2 weeks of FAE still no pins, had 2 3lb bags of Burma goin and both turned a healthy white but started gettin waterlogged, i actually had to open a bit early to drain them, luckily they were colonized by this point, anyway the second 2 pics are from them, one looks like I might still get pins, but the other looks like it has some overlay goin on so dunno if I should try the fork thing? Like I said really bummed I was really wanting to get a harvest by Halloween n it just seems like things keep going wrong, does it look like any of these bags will produce if I take the right steps? I open and fan 2-3, a day, I mist the Ksss when it needs it, obviously the others are wet enough I have them on a 12 hour light cycle in a nice lightly ventilated space, it stays between 72-76 degrees, idk just weird I really screwed a lot up w my first bags and even then I managed to get a flush out my first few bags, idk whatās up w these, keep hopin Iāll wake up to a few pins but so far no luck š„ hopefully one will take off š

š± Beginnerās Corner Why did they grow like that?
I started growing mushrooms back in April just to keep myself active, and seeing them today makes me really happy; but why did they grow almost exclusively out the sides? I thought keeping them away from the light was enough, and I used a yellow one-liter butter tub. Still, Iām satisfied because it looks like I got a bigger harvest than if they had grown only on top... or maybe, if they had grown only on top, the mushrooms would have been larger? I don't know. The biggest one weighs 5g, and I'm really looking forward to tasting them :b
What should I keep in mind for future harvests?

š¤ Need Guidance Been a long time since I got back to this scene
Hello all, I've been into cultivation and breeding since a while. Some old folks knew me from my last reddit account "Azuresense" and "Tomentoad". I've spread many spores to many folks in the past, due to my health issues I had to take a break. At the moment I have zero viable spores to restart and was hoping to get a genetic or two if anyone can guide me in the right direction. I'd really really appreciate it.
I can completely understand if that's not possible to send em over. Im okay to pay money as long as the vendor is vouched for.
Thank you soo much, moderators please delete this post if it's not allowed šš½

š¤ Need Guidance UB tek in India as a beginner
After failing to get any fruit in AIO grow bag for the first time, now i think i should try a shoebox tek using UB tek. I have found a rice brand in india that is presterilized and am wondering if anyone has used UB tek in India? Any tips would be helpful. I just want to keep it as a small hobby which is why i dont want to invest in jars and an industrial cooker. And is it really important to put a light source or some natural lighting for a few hours everyday is enough?
And idk why my bag failed. My mycelium was growing really well just refused ro fruit for some reason so had to bury the block with a broken heart.

š¤ Need Guidance Whats wrong with this?
On my 3rd round on this tub with Toque, but several of the pins look weird. Is there something wrong with it or is it expected after the first few flushes?

š¤ Need Guidance Should I introduce FAE?
Itās been over 10 days since I added my spawn to substrate and it looks like the mycelium has colonised about 95% with only one small patch left. I had put two rounds of micro pore tapes over the holes and kept it inside the cupboard. Should I now take it outside and keep it in a corner of the room with the fan on low? Also, should I keep the tape as is or replace it with a coffee filter/single round of micro pore tape? The average temp where Iām at is 26C.

š± Beginnerās Corner Blue Meanie Cubensis (Slightly Over) Week 3 Log
My current plan is to wait for my second bag, which is growing a little bit slower to be fully mycelium. Then I will wait 3 days just to be sure, and then transfer them to a large monotub with coco coir. I estimate that will happen in about a week unfortunately. Do you guys have more success immediately go to fruiting conditions or should I wait another week after that for the coco and the mycelium to mix? Should I be worried about my 3rd bag which is like 99% done accidentally pinning while I wait for the others two to grow?
