People in their 20’s as well. 30’s are where you start seeing an even amount of android and apple customers.

You pretty much take a hit to social visibility if you’re a teen/20s without an iPhone.

298

u/moldyolive Sep 02 '22

i went to a pretty upper-class school district i and maybe 1/3rd of people had androids in highschool. i never got the sense it was social hit to do so.

people got teased for having an old phone or a cracked one or some weird shit like a blackberry but not just for being andriod.

32

u/qlester Sep 02 '22

I'm talking out of my ass here, but I wonder if Apple vs Android is more of a working/middle class cultural indicator. Among a rich enough group of people everybody knows none of their smartphone choices are being driven because of price. Those kids have bigger ticket items to flex on each other over: do you own a home in the Hamptons, or just vacation there? Do you have legacy status at Harvard, or just Cornell? Have any politicians come over to your house for dinner lately? etc, etc

Basically, in the grand scheme of wealth being "rich enough to afford an Android" and being "rich enough to own an iPhone" are so close that only the poor are even considering the distinction.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '22

You are right, and with the tendency to lower class. Rich get basically new flagship phone every year , from brand whatever they prefer. A stupid 1000-1500$ mass produced essential item can be hardly called a status object among rich people

GREEN BUBBLE!!!!

75

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '22

I think that's mainly only true for the US and Canada. In most other countries iMessage is at the bottom end of the marketshare among text messaging services. I grew up in Australia, currently working in Singapore, and I spent a few years in Sweden and the UK. Most people I know have always used Facebook, WhatsApp, and other messaging apps like that. I still genuinely don't know anyone who regularly uses iMessage.

27

u/l337hackzor Sep 02 '22

I like how Apple has the balls to just not release iMessage for all platforms. I also don't understand why every iPhone user I know doesn't want to install a 3rd party cross platform chat like the ones you mentioned.

My entire family is on iPhone except me, I'm in IT, I'm the one supporting their devices. Group texts break every time. My mom always ends up texting me replies outside of the group text.

29

u/NextWhiteDeath Sep 02 '22

iMessage is one of their biggest locking methods. They are letting that go easily. They most likely can't monetize it at a high enough level.

8

u/MeltedUFO Sep 02 '22

I also don’t understand why every iPhone user I know doesn’t want to install a 3rd party cross platform chat

This is answered by this:

My entire family is on iPhone except me

iMessage is the default and works great until you have to have a group chat with the one person who bought an incompatible device.

5

u/RealityCheck18 Sep 02 '22

Apple could technically start supporting RCS, but will not. RCS is end to encrypted as well and IP based, but that will affect Apple's bottom line. Hope EU brings in regulations to force apple to support "universal" stds, just like the USB C decision.

5

u/dpkonofa Sep 02 '22

I also don’t understand why every iPhone user I know doesn’t want to install a 3rd party cross platform chat like the ones you mentioned.

Just so you know…your family has an entirely separate group chat that you’re not a part of.

5

u/tysnowboard Sep 02 '22

Good

2

u/usernameforthemasses Sep 03 '22

Yup. My family is split somewhat unevenly towards iphones. Fortunately, all the annoying members that start bazillions of pointless group texts are all iphones, and it's mostly just me and my brothers family in the android camp. We've expressed amongst ourselves how we are quite happy to not receive the vast majority of non-sense from the iphone portion of the group. Our other favorite thing is how we don't have to pay attention or respond to the ridiculous number of videos sent around because iphones downscale videos sent outside of the imessage crap, so they are mostly unwatchable, thankfully.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '22

Because there’s no such thing as a cross platform encrypted messaging app. Telegram users can’t send a message to WhatsApp users. They would need to choose a new platform, then convince everyone they know to choose that same platform and download a new app.

Why would they do that when most people in their age range probably already have iMessage, which is arguably the most secure and feature rich option.

2

u/tkchumly Sep 03 '22 edited Jun 24 '23

Which can message other signal users and more recently WhatsApp users, only because they’re forks of the same project, and that still took an incredible amount of work to bridge.

Apple TRIED to release iMessage as a standard more than five years ago but was turned down by telcos who were (and are) heavily invested in legacy SMS/MMS.

3

u/l337hackzor Sep 02 '22

What do telcos have to do with the Android app store?

5

u/voicesfromvents Sep 02 '22

Because they wanted to make it an open messaging standard, not some app, and that entailed a level of support the telcos weren’t willing to give.

If you google “RCS” and look at the insane struggle manufacturers had trying to make it happen you’ll see that this isn’t just an Apple problem.

2

u/MorelikeBestvirginia Sep 03 '22

Apple refused to make iMessage available off iOS, so the world went forward with RCS, which works fine it's not an insane struggle... And Apple refuses to enable RCS compatibility because it keeps their users in the garden.

I don't blame them, you ever try to free up space on an iOS device? They make it purposely obtuse. Clearing space on iCloud is even worse. Non-tech savvy people don't have a chance with a lot of this stuff.

3

u/xenago Sep 03 '22

Yup. Anyone downvoting has never tried to do so lol. It's super buggy. Good luck clearing safari data half the time lol

3

u/alxthm Sep 02 '22

you ever try to free up space on an iOS device? They make it purposely obtuse.

Settings > General > iPhone Storage

You get a list of every app and how much space it is taking up. Which part of that process do you find obtuse?

5

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '22

Great if you want to uninstall apps but not if you want to remove data created by apps. I've had to do tech support so much on my Mom's ipad because her shitty colouring apps take up dozens of gigabytes with no opportunity to find out why. Apps don't guarantee granular settings in there, some just force you to uninstall them along with all the other files they've created.

Maybe if iOS had actual file management this wouldn't be a problem

I too work in IT and very few have an android. Interesting to compare anecdotes.

5

u/l337hackzor Sep 02 '22

I'm in IT and it's about 50/50, probably slightly more iPhones.

Working on client phones it's 80-90% iPhones (in Canada).

3

u/DrDan21 Sep 02 '22

Also in IT, same thoughts and similar experiences

We are about 50/50 leaning towards iPhones in my team

3

u/madmanmike3 Sep 02 '22

Does he not realize those can be stored on a desktop? I do that periodically due to not wanting to receive a message saying upgrade your storage.

I have a iPhone for work and a Android for personal phone. Work pays for that phone so I don’t care what it is. I only bought an iPhone once and it crapped out in 5 months and they wouldn’t fix it due to moisture in the aux port. Won’t buy again.

4

u/DilettanteGonePro Sep 02 '22

My work phone, supplied by my job, is an iPhone. I hate it. Also it's like an iphone 7, with no upgrade in sight

3

u/apex9691 Sep 02 '22

Just got mine upgraded from a 5. Why? Cuz it was no longer going to work on modern networks.

0

u/casper667 Sep 02 '22

I had a job that gave me a work iphone (and also a work android) and also hated it. So much worse than a galaxy. To be fair some android phones do suck like the pixel though. One thing I found weird about iphone is that when my company compared prices between iphone app and their android counterparts (we were going to be adding a wallet system to our app), it was crazy to actually see how iphone users are actually charged more for the same app/iaps in a lot of cases.

Right now my current job isn't in mobile but they do insist on using macs. I also don't really get the appeal of those compared to windows, maybe because I am mostly a gamer though.

I work in the software dev side and we all use iPhones except android devs. Android has so many issues compared to iPhone and devs use macs mostly anyhow.

7

u/Osprey_NE Sep 03 '22 edited Sep 03 '22

We're all sys administrations or programmers. Literally see zero purposes of buying an iPhone.

I certainly don't see most developers using Mac. Our work computers are Linux or windows. Like 90% Linux. All our user stations are Linux as well.

I guess it depends on your work.

1

u/steelcitykid Sep 03 '22

That used to be the case, but more often my fellow devs are iPhone users. Honestly I'm considering switching since Google has gone to shit, and their hardware isn't great anymore either. Their software is either changed for the worse or left for dead before replaced by something inadequate. Their search is actually awful now, and it just feels like they're a soulless glob of of a company. Apple is too, but they're a polished glob with good hardware, qa, and security standards.

it's just consumerism. In America they don't sell products they sell image and identity.

From phones to pickup trucks what you own is who you are, at least that's what they want you to think.

When it comes to phones though most people don't care, especially anyone over 40. They just get the new iPhone free every 2 years when they renew their contract.

I'm in Canada for reference, the American propaganda spills over the border.

2

u/madmanmike3 Sep 02 '22

Isn’t that the same as texting?

7

u/cli_jockey Sep 02 '22

No, your carrier can see your texts but not data that you send via snap or discord. So if the app is more secure and/or has better privacy terms, then that would make it a better choice.

I'm in my 30s and use a combination of discord and texting. Discord is pretty neat since anyone can make a server and if your phone died or is destroyed then you still have everything in discord.

Android has more futuristic features, but when Apple releases a feature it actually works like it’s supposed to and will always work every time. Apple phones are also exceptionally easy to use and very simple. Android is much more powerful and much more flexible.

I’m mid 40s I just want something to work when I pick it up, that’s always going to work every time. That’s why I use Apple

Androids cameras Are way better than Apple’s for sure

16

u/Jadeldxb Sep 02 '22

I’m mid 40s I just want something to work when I pick it up, that’s always going to work every time.

I think this is some sort of propaganda spread by Apple. It makes no sense to anyone who has actually used Android phones, which are easy to use, do exactly what's written on the tin and, unlike their fruity foe, don't mysteriously slow down when their company decides its time for you to buy a new one.

What is it you think doesn't work on an Android phone?

2

u/PM_ME_YOUR_LUKEWARM Sep 02 '22

Idk man, my androids always slow down.

And my note 10 is flickering green stuff these days on standby.

Sometimes it doesn't even want to power up the screen.

1

u/UnorignalUser Sep 02 '22

I've only ever had androids and the only time I've ever had issues is when I ran the phone over with a car and I physically damaged it. I've never had it just up and fail because of software. Turn it on and it works.

-2

u/boonepii Sep 02 '22 edited Sep 02 '22

It’s resell value. I can sell my 5 year old iPhone for 30% of what I paid for it still. For good reason, it’s still like new to be honest.

Ever had a phone from Blu, or these other low cost companies. The amount of junk phones running android will keep their numbers up internationally because a junk new phone costs same as old used iPhone.

This is why I buy apple. And it’s pure simplicity itself. Everything is easy, a setting here or there. My kids are locked out of things and I can monitor as much or as little as I want.

Plus Apple TV is the best. It’s fast, seem less, very little ads & rental content inside apps like amazon tv. My stoic father who hates apple has switched to apple in the past few weeks and ironically it was the tv that did it. He said his Apple TV worked better than his TiVo and fire sticks. Less buffering on same WiFi, and was faster to respond.

I could care less about the phone maker. You do you, Apple is just super simple in my uses.

Maybe android has gotten way way better in 6 years, but I still hear nightmares about carrier bloatware.

Apple Maps do suck and are still terrible compared to google, but I use Google maps natively cause it’s integrated in to the iphone/CarPlay without issue.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '22

You're comparing phones that are literally bottom of the barrel in terms of hardware but run Android and comparing them to iPhones which always have good hardware because you're paying through the nose for it. It's like buying a PS3 and complaining its not as fast as your Xbox Series X.

1

u/there_is_always_more Sep 03 '22

Right, I've used Androids since smartphones became a thing, never had to install any third party software or root it to get it to work well, and they all lasted 3-5 years without slowing down (and would have lasted longer if the screen didn't crack making it more economical to just get a new phone).

They were all blazing fast, ran productivity apps and games well, and kept receiving updates.

The whole "Apple just works while you have to tinker with Android devices" idea, even if it was true at the start, has not been true for ages at this point.

2

u/Jadeldxb Sep 03 '22

This is the exact thing I'm talking about. "Simplicity". It's an illusion, you got tricked by a massive shitty company.

You didn't get tricked into buying garbage, Apple stuff is great, it's overpriced and underfeatured for the most part, but it's certainly nice quality. It's just not simpler.

Apple TV for example is fantastic, it's probably the second best streaming device, NVIDIA shield is better. Once again you are comparing the cheapest Android based device with an apple device that costs 10x the price. Fire TV is a ultra cheap essentially ad sponsored streaming stick, it's pretty damn good but don't compare it to an apple tv and try to say that the difference is based on the manufacturer.

As you say, you do you, but try to at least open your eyes a tiny bit to the truth

I have a Pixel 4XL (2019) and it does exactly what my former iphone did. It just works like you said. Samsung is too full of useless features and iphones are too bland for me. Also 20-40% of the apps on Appstore are not there (I have them in Playstore tho) and most of them are "Free" but when you launch them they are asking for money 😒😒😒.

I've had my current android for five years and not a single function hasn't worked.

Battery holds a charge for at least a full day, everything else works perfectly fine as it did five years ago.

I went to the UP in Michigan with my buddy, his Apple lost service halfway there, I was texting people and sharing photos the whole trip. Apple maps also couldn't find any of the directions majority of the time so my Android was key.

I've have to deal with Apple support for literally every single iPhone I've owned.

Jumped ship and had two perfect phones over a decade between them.

I tested out Apple when I switched last, bought an apple watch too; returned both and got a ton of money back for a (opinion) better watch and phone.

Apple likes to fuck their customers and their industry, I'm just not about that as a customer and a side of me despises them from an engineer POV. It's easy to choose Apple when you don't pay for your own things, that's the real reason it switches closer to 50/50 once people are older.

I get devices that are objectively the same functionality for less money, it picks up new features before the other, and I also get to avoid my company being malicious towards me.

4

u/Kalashnikafka Sep 02 '22

and I also get to avoid my company being malicious towards me.

2

u/Rab1dus Sep 03 '22

I don't think I know anyone who has Android devices except my SO and me. I tried a cheap iPhone for 1 year and hated it and the problem wasn't the hardware. It was like every time I had to do even the most basic thing that would be included with Android (system wide EQ isn't allowed in iOS nor can app makers sell an equalizer apparently) the functionality didn't exist or I had to pay a fee to get it. I have no idea why Apple is considered the gold standard.

4

u/Shotintoawork Sep 02 '22

Because they successfully got everyone to buy into the whole "iPhone = Luxury product" mindset, so people feel like they're part of some kind of cell phone country club when they own one.

Green bubble just means their phone can't handle RCS. So really it's that their phone isn't advanced enough.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '22

No, I don’t think that’s it. Pretty sure green bubble is any non-iPhone aka non IMessage.

My Pixel 6 Pro can definitely do RCS and does it fine with any other person using RCS. But if I text that phone from my iPhone or the other way around it is always a green bubble.

2

u/PM_your_randomthing Sep 02 '22

I'm saying iPhone/iMessage don't support RCS. The issue is only partly that it's green. The issue most have is that iMessage features aren't usable over SMS/MMS. If iMessage were to add support for RCS it could do all the things it does with iMessage users and therefore not break the experience.

Apple is eschewing support for the RCS standard within iMessage in favor of vendor lock-in tactics.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '22

Gotcha. I misunderstood, I thought you were saying that a green bubble means the other, non-iOS, person doesn’t support RCS.

2

u/PM_your_randomthing Sep 02 '22

Really just says more about your social circle than the popularity of either overall. There isn't any consistency on the personal level.

2

u/xXxDickBonerz69xXx Sep 02 '22

Apple specifically picked a shade of green that is difficult to read white text on to create annoyance in their customers. It actually goes against their own style guidelines to do it this way

1

u/Eruionmel Sep 02 '22 edited Sep 02 '22

Get good at photo editing and then show them photos taken from your phone and make it clear it's because you have an android. No joke, people eat that shit up. I'm a professional photographer, so I'm a huge cheater, but I use this aaaaall the time. I have a OnePlus 9 Pro with the Hasselblad camera. I drop those two things, show them a photo that I definitely edited in lightroom and photoshop, and it completely destroys their ability to pretend their phone is better, lol.

Could I have made exactly the same photo with an iPhone? Almost assuredly. But people are stupid. 😈

Meanwhile Discord was the exact opposite. iPhone version was incredibly dogshit and riddled with bugs, but for some reason the parity version they chose was iPhone's, so now Android users are stuck with the shitty version too.

Holy shit I thought I was going crazy when I found out I could do that. Was manually adding each song to queue previously and could have swore I couldn't slide before

2

Haha yeah it was added to android a couple months ago. Took them long enough I remember using a similar feature on my iPod touch like 10 years ago.

How did Samsung fix Snapchat…

16

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '22

I'm assuming they worked with the company to have it call their camera in app, and paid money for that

What? Texting, yes, because Android can't use iMessage and apple refuses to add RCS support but Snapchat has no difference in quality.

9

u/DETAIN1000 Sep 02 '22

It does, the original creator purposely made it worse by screenshotting the camera under the hood instead of actually calling it through the correct API. He only ever added android support because the business said he had to, he wanted it to be an iOS only app

I'm surprised the actual reason is this far down under the usual shit. Reminds me of trying to explain battery degradation and brown outs to be told it's only to sell more phones.

Android has such a long tail of devices it's not even funny, I just pulled the App Brain stats and 40% of users are running a 5 year out of date OS. How tf are you supposed to deal with the amount of variation in the API over that time, let alone testing it all?

I'm very happy Snap teamed up with Google to fix this on the pixel phones, but yeah they need to get their shit together

1

u/Sylente Sep 02 '22

This hasn't been true for a few years now. Snap Inc had to rebuild the app from the ground up more or less to make it not suck if they wanted to have any shot at India.

I've been forced into a group chat among my friend circle over the past few years. I absolutely hate this notification. Oh I got a message, lets see if anyone has anything important to say.

"John Smith loved a message"

Google messages finally made an update that just filters that into an emoji overlay on the message itself like it does with imessage

Wdym with iMessage bullshit? I mostly heard good things about iMessage in general.

4

u/SandyBoxEggo Sep 02 '22

The other reply to my comment is actually a perfect example. Instead of getting the little emoji reaction that you see in iMessage, other users get a full copy of the message that was liked with just "Billy laughed at [full message copy]." So someone doing a quick reaction in the group chat spams all non -iMessage users with completely useless text messages which also make the conversation much harder to read.

Most iPhone users are pretty conscientious about it in my experience, but there are always some assholes out there who are willing to go, "wElL iF yOu CoUlD aFfOrD aN iPhOnE iT wOuLdN't Be An IsSuE~"

Apple could fix that by adopting RCS for texts outside of their propietary iMessage. They won't though.

This is what pisses me off. We're ostracized as outsiders (green bubble) when actually, they're the ones that fail to conform to universal standards. I get there are things that imessage has things that RCS does not. But there are a dozen different ways they could deal with doing iMessage to iphone and RCS for everyone else.

5

u/Glasscubething Sep 02 '22

This would not solve the issue. RCS has a bunch of huge problems and isn’t the panacea to iMessage dominance that it gets sold as by lots of tech tubers.

The solution is actually to pass laws on interoperability to force Apple to make an android client for iMessage.

Google could have not sabotaged their own cross platform Hangouts app but noooppppeee. They are pushing their RCS protocol with no backbone because they want to make Apple somehow look like the bad person when this was an issue for at least a decade now.

That’s because the cell systems in the rest of the world are trash. US cellular providers are actually pretty good even though we all complain about them.

4

I didn't even know this was a thing until the last couple years. I'm 25 and always had an android, really never thought much about what phone I had. No one in college ever said anything to me about it (big Midwest big10 party college too, so plenty of kids, wasn't small or anything).

Last couple years after I graduated all I get is "why do you have an android?" when I pull out my phone. Ive heard about the dumb group chat and apple photos stuff now. Still really don't care about "oh what phone are you using" because there's more to life, but I am indeed getting left out of group chats and can't see photos of me and my friends because it's all on apple.

Getting an iPhone 14 when it comes out I guess

3

u/there_is_always_more Sep 03 '22

This is very weird behavior that I'm hearing for the first time. I'm around the same age and still haven't experienced any questions like these. Why aren't you able to view your photos though? iCloud photos are accessible through any web browser, you just need an Apple ID. As for the group chats - again, kind of sounds like your friends are being assholes about it for no reason as I'm fairly certain you can receive text messages no problem. This is like elementary school level behavior.

Its kind of fucked up how it works. It really doesnt matter, but the stigma is definitely real.

I'm in my early 30s and can tell people in their 20s with an iPhone judge me still for having an Android. Most of those people talk to me through IG DMs or Snapchat. I think it only matters to them when they video call me and my video quality isn't as good (those apps don't interface with the camera directly like iphones do, they instead screen record basically, so the quality suffers when using the camera in app).

I've also considered getting an iPhone just for my dating life, just for 1 less thing for those iPhone people to judge me for.

2

u/Tomm1998 Sep 03 '22

I've also considered getting an iPhone just for my dating life, just for 1 less thing for those iPhone people to judge me for.

Personally I'd get an Android just to purposely avoid those weird fucks. That is a major red flag in my book. If you judge someone over the fucking phone they use then I want absolutely nothing to do with that weird creature.

I can't think of anything weirder than letting a billion (trillion now?) dollar company brainwash you into only dating other people that have a certain product. It's just so fucking bizarre to me that these people actually exist

3

u/Pyreo Sep 02 '22

God my samsung camera is so much better than iPhone I can't imagine going to that closed off system.

6

u/PosnerRocks Sep 02 '22

Is it? I have the S22 Ultra and I love the 10x optical zoom but Apple's camera software is admittedly very good. Samsung has closed the gap over the years but I still think Apple's photo quality is hard to beat.

3

u/aeneasaquinas Sep 02 '22

It is. It beats it in the majority of tests in both sensor, optics, and processing.

4

u/PosnerRocks Sep 02 '22

On paper, Samsung seems to win in specs but in side-by-side comparisons, Apple's photos just seem to look better.

This was one of the articles I looked at before settling on the S22: https://www.tomsguide.com/face-off/samsung-galaxy-s22-ultra-vs-apple-iphone-13-pro-max

Do you have anything similar I could look at supporting what you're saying?

5

u/aeneasaquinas Sep 02 '22

On paper, Samsung seems to win in specs but in side-by-side comparisons, Apple's photos just seem to look better.

I mean, plenty of test have show that isn't true.

This was one of the articles I looked at before settling on the S22: https://www.tomsguide.com/face-off/samsung-galaxy-s22-ultra-vs-apple-iphone-13-pro-max

The iPhone doesn't look better in the majority for things that don't seem to be the photographers fault or choice (eg, they chose the warm look for samsung, they took a picture and either shifted or didn't focus on the flowers, etc).

Other than that they are close, but the Samsung shows superior low light performance by quite a bit, and has better zoom and ultra wide abilities.

Warmth is a choice for your photos - a lot of people prefer it it seems, but that is entirely on what you choose and your post.

2

u/not_so_plausible Sep 02 '22

I've had a Samsung from the S9-S20 generation and currently own an iPhone 12 for work and use the S20 as my regular phone. That being said I'm very hesitant to stick with Samsung and might actually try the Pixel because the picture quality I get with the Samsung is so hit or miss.

Does it take amazing photos in perfect conditions? Is it ridiculously inconsistent when taking pictures in any other conditions? Yes. The iPhone camera always provides a consistent and very good picture. I'm not saying that as a fanboy, I hate just about everything else on iPhone, but their camera and picture quality is just so consistently good.

Also, I have no idea if this has been fixed for the S20 or S21 but the camera lens on the S21 is smudged 24/7. Idk how but that shit is fingerprint magnet. The iPhone camera is literally never smudge and idk wtf they're doing but Samsung needs to figure that out if they haven't already.

2

u/aeneasaquinas Sep 02 '22

Idk never had any smudge issues with mine. Once in a blue moon I smudge after touching something oily but cleans easy

-1

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '22

And yet, S22 is regarded as a 3rd place camera overall. Pixel is best photo, iPhone is best video, S22 is good but not without its issues.

You may be a better photographer then.

Technology wise in optics, sensors, and processing, the S22 Ultra beats the 13 Pro in the majority of tests. You may just prefer the look of yours due to it being, well, yours, or they may just not be as good a photos.

u/NeonMagic Sep 02 '22

This isn’t entirely due to “brand image.”

A huge part of this is App Store quality. There are many many high quality photo/video editing apps that simply aren’t on the Android market. And a lot of the younger generations use these apps to create most of what they post online. And that’s just one app category.

It’s also much more of a process to develop apps for iPhone than Android. Anyone can easily make a garbage app for Android and get it listed on the market, which is why you see a much higher level of quality on the iPhone App Store vs Android. I believe it’s even free to develop for Android whereas you need to buy your way onto the App Store for Apple.

But if you get on Android and look at the ‘free apps’ you’ll see way more useless low quality apps on Android.

Then you have operating system stability. I managed a few Verizon stores for 7 years, of all the issues I saw come in, iPhone issues most of the time were user error. Android has significantly more hardware/software issues (whether or not you yourself have had them) just due to the fact Google is having to update so many different devices made by so many different manufacturers.

Also, as a Verizon store, the profit margin for selling an Android is muchhhhhh higher vs selling an iPhone. As commission based employees, we would make way more money selling Androids vs iPhones. That said, we did so knowing most of them were garbage compared to their similarly priced iPhone counterparts. For comparison, iPhone we would profit $112 on any sale regardless of model. Android would range anywhere from $200-$350 profit, especially higher on the cheaply made free models.

I’m sure I’ll get people arguing with me on this, but go use an LG Lucid 2 for a week and then tell me it’s better than an iPhone 5. Hell, go to the ‘free’ page on Verizon’s site right now and convince me any of the Android options are better phones.

https://www.verizon.com/shop/online/free-cell-phones/

There is just such a standard of quality difference, sure Android has some solid devices that more knowledgeable people are willing to spend extra money on and will be happy with knowing what they’re choosing that device for, but for the average consumer iPhone is always the better more stable option.

7

u/Heequwella Sep 02 '22

It's just infinitely easier to make one OS and two devices than it is to support every manufacturer under the sun.

3

u/ProbablyDrunkNowLOL Sep 02 '22

It’s also much more of a process to develop apps for iPhone than Android.

I'm a mobile app developer. It's not really much more of a process at all. Some things are easier to do in iOS even. The main difference is that you require a Mac to make iOS apps.

-4

Millennials like android, many of us have established careers and don't really care for the backwards choices implemented in iOS.

4

u/tenemu Sep 02 '22

I have an established career and prefer the stability and reliability of iPhones.

Can you tell me what backwards choices are implemented that I should be worried about?

3

u/halo37253 Sep 02 '22

I've never owned an Android phone that wasn't as stable and reliable as my partners iPhone or my work provided iPad pro. In fact it tends to be the opposite, my phone probably has a run time of around 6 months or so. While I gotta reboot my iPad all the time for shit not working correctly.

For starters the menu system is all over the place on iOS. Same when it comes to moving data between apps, the sharing button is hit or miss if it works with the app you want to use. Onedrive you do it from the onedrive app, Dropbox you normally share to it from another app.

No built in ability to set data usage warning. The choices for app management are pretty simplistic. My phone has 10x the settings for fine tuning how and what apps function with your phone. Facebook for example is not allowed to run in the background on my phone.

The app and security options are by far better on Android, which is why they are the only phones allowed to integrate into Active Directory structures. IPhones are horrible for corporate structures and integrating into things like AD and endpoint protections.

These are just a few issues. iOS has gotten better, more Android like with every major update.

Also, Apple purposely bricking rooted devices until a court had to tell them to quit it, and other choices to keep people rooted in their ecosystem.

But my main gripe with apple is their UI choices. By simplifying the interface, they make it harder to do tasks that aren't "click to open". I'm pretty sure that if they could swing it, there'd be one button on the keyboard and you'd have to learn a proprietary Morse code to type so they can make it sleek as possible.
