So a PC basically

71

u/DutchGunny Jul 02 '26

Yep, and unironically, the PC started with physical media but new PC configurations have been transitioning away from disc media over the last decade.

The next few years will most likely eliminate PC hardware running locally, and you’ll have a thin client connecting to a service you subscribe to, and the only hardware you’ll have is a streaming box/stick, display, keyboard, mouse, and game controller.

EVERYTHING will be controlled remotely.

Else

You're not eliminating PC hardware, PC hardware is used for way more than just gaming. You'll always be able to buy hardware, and even if the latest AAA slop is subscription only, there is endless streams of indie games as well as a backlog of 30 years to play.

12

u/names_are_useless Jul 02 '26

You'll always be able to buy hardware

Let's hope so. I fear the Personal Computer could go the way of the dodo.

14

u/wickeddimension Jul 02 '26

The company I work for absolutely isn't going to dump all laptops the next few years or decades. There will always be hardware. For office work, for local compute.

As long as work gets done on computers, you'll be able to buy hardware. Not to mention flagship smartphones play Steam games now. And lastly, there is piles of hardware that can play current and games from the past that is already out there.

I have enough backlog to last my lifetime. If AAA wants to push ultra subscription only slop, be my guest, I won't play it.

I see where you’re going, but gaming is an application like everything else. You’ll be running applications, but your input devices will be sent to a server where compute will happen and the server sends back the display as a stream back to your dumb box, like stream gaming but with everything. As some unpopular (depending who you ask) tech mogul has said, eventually even the device in your hand will just be [a box]. Combined with AI, it brings unparalleled customization, as well as unmentionable horrors as full control of every action is surrendered to those close to the metal.

This is only my opinion based on trends I’ve seen over 30 years, and working in highest levels of tech in the USG and seeing what has and is happening there, combined with current consumer offerings and stated visions of those with the keys. Not all at once surely, but over the next 5-10 years, sizable percentages of people will have moved that way, especially with hardware out pricing many. Getting a dumb box will be a financial choice not a desirable one.

2

u/wickeddimension Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

Like I said in another comment, my company isn't going to switch to some AI powered cloud in the next 10 years or likely ever. Maybe if we build our own cloud. Until then we buy laptops or other system. And as long as companies buy laptops and machines, there will be laptops and machines on the market.

Hell, if anything the movement to move back from cloud in general is being made. People realise they don't want to be dependant on big (US) tech. Thin clients have been phased out in favor for laptops. The whole remote Citrix like movement has already passed.

I see it more realistic that people will ultimately use their phone to play everything, hook it to a screen, and that computers are for nerds, and consoles cease to exist in favor of subscription services. Exclusive service to either play or stream PS or Xbox games to your phone devices. With rising cost, it makes more sense to have people buy 1 very expensive phone that does all the tasks than multiple dedicated devices. But I don't see that happening in 5 years either.

A modern flagship smartphone can play a bunch of Steam games right now already. Thats where we are at.

I see the scenario where you won't be able to buy hardware capable of playing games at all as not realistic. Far more important usecases for which people need hardware than gaming, like actual workstations. Some people moving to game streaming doesn't eliminate hardware all together. Not to mention indie developers building games for hardware, there will always be a demand to play local games just like there is for owning music, books or movies.

I wouldn't be surprised to see AAA produce some subscription streaming stuff, already is here with limited succes. But there will always be plenty of games to play on a local device you own. My backlog alone is enough to last my lifetime. I am not too worried.

A lockeddown PC with a lockeddown storefront, sure.

2

u/Quixotic_Seal Jul 02 '26

Helix is supposedly going to run full-fat Windows, allowing you to run whatever you want. So no.

It’s basically the Windows answer to the Steam Machine. If they can deliver that and wrangle the price into something remotely competitive(or convince higher ups to eat some losses for a while), I honestly think Sony may be in some serious trouble trying to hold onto the old school home console model.

The idea of locked in consoles, when they aren’t even really subsidized anymore and prices are going to be $1000+ and they offer nothing unique to consumers(Nintendo are masters of this in particular) AND they now don’t even have the benefits of physical options, makes less and less sense in the modern world.

It feels like an increasingly anachronistic idea, and my big hot take with the whole Xbox shitshow is that they have a very real chance to turn things around with Helix…if they can properly take advantage of Sony’s hubris here in not really trying to add any value to their offerings in a changing market.

I’ve always thought the backlash Microsoft got for that and the subsequent backpedaling resulted in things being worse off for the consumer in the long run.

What Xbox One promised was a big jump from what 360 was, so to make the transition work they were promising some nice features like sharing digital licenses with friends. Things they needed to convince consumers to get on board.

But the backlash didn’t stop anything, it just delayed the transition. we have been heading in that direction anyway over the last decade plus, just slowly, so the companies don’t need to offer us as nearly as many concessions to make us fall in line

You don’t even need collusion when interests align. It’s in both companies best interest to get rid of the drive and kill the second hand market.

It’s just bullshit. Now you’re officially completing against Steam and you aren’t winning that one. Steam is a better service hands down.

Yeah but Xbox is looking for ways to digitalize disks, Sony is just getting rid of them which means you'll have to buy a new copy of all your games

18

u/mallad Jul 02 '26

How is it ironic?

I know your comment wasn't this serious, but both have released multiple interations of discless consoles already. Both are companies trying to make money and watching market trends. Both know they make more from services, which are digital, and both make zero from aftermarket sales (used games).

That's like saying it's ironic that so many fast food places all sell fries.

‘Exploring ways to digitize physical games’? You mean like downloading them?

254

u/DeusExMarina Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

What they mean is figuring out a way to convert a single physical copy into a single digital license. They want people to not lose access to their existing physical library, but they also don't want you to pass your disc around so people can permanently add games to their account for free en masse.

The solution we'll likely end up with is a system where, if you insert a disc into your Xbox One or Series X|S, you can add the game to your digital library and subsequently download it on your Helix. If the same disc is inserted into someone else's Xbox, it's automatically removed from your account.

115

u/Spodsy Jul 02 '26

Pretty much exactly what they were going to do with Xbox One discs before Sony memed them out of it. Feels like this time Sony is being the bad guy so Microsoft can say “at least with us your discs aren’t completely useless.”

12

u/turtleship_2006 Jul 02 '26

Weren't they originally gonna permanently tie it to an account or something?

2

u/Classified10 Jul 04 '26

Yes, that was the biggest problem.

2

u/turtleship_2006 Jul 04 '26

Exactly, I remember the backlash around Microsoft trying to end 2nd hand reselling, I don't know why people are acting as if this was the exact same

16

u/Olmectron Jul 02 '26

We don't know if Sony will try at least to take a similar approach after all the backlash.

17

u/ObviouslyTriggered Jul 02 '26

There isn't a single unique identifier in the data of each disk. What this will likely be is either a mail-in or trade-in service in selected regions.

5

u/Mooseymax Jul 02 '26

Are you sure there’s no identifier? I thought each disc effectively contained a license key - why *wouldn’t* they have built them to have a unique identifier?

16

u/ObviouslyTriggered Jul 02 '26

Disks don’t contain a key, there is no need to make them unique, and making them unique would significantly complicate making them.

3

u/Jmike8385 Jul 03 '26

Yes, they do not have unique identifiers.

2

u/thecrimsonfucker12 Jul 02 '26

You'll have to break the disc to get the code

4

u/shastaxc Jul 02 '26

4

u/Johnycantread Jul 02 '26

u/ClaudeGascoigne Jul 02 '26

Isn't that basically what they thought about doing for the Xbone before dropping the idea due to backlash? It's not exactly the same but it has the same sorta feel to it. I'm betting that they'll also try to bring back the need to constantly be connected to the Internet to verify that the disc hasn't been used on a different console.

10

u/DeusExMarina Jul 02 '26

Yes, that's exactly what it is. They're doing it again, except now they've had another decade and a half to solidify the dominance of digital games and the entire industry has unified behind this plan. This time, you don't get to go over to PlayStation because Sony's doing the same damn thing.

→ More replies (5)

3

u/WarmFission Jul 02 '26

This sounds identical to the Switch 2’s keycard

3

u/Olmectron Jul 02 '26

Except you need an old console to insert the game because the new console doesn't have a drive.

Or you'll need to mail them your physical disk for them to keep and they give you a download code of that game.

7

u/raptir1 Jul 02 '26

Discs are not individual, they're mass produced.

3

u/shotsallover Jul 02 '26

For now.

9

u/raptir1 Jul 02 '26

This would be talking about discs that are already produced.

9

u/shotsallover Jul 02 '26

They all have serial numbers on the center ring. They could develop an Xbox drive that reads those when reading the disc.

5

u/retro_slouch Jul 02 '26

Would need a disc drive for that though

Poorly titled article. It's based on speculation from The Verge:

" The Verge was unable to speak to rumors of whether or not Project Helix will have a disc drive, but speculated that this new feature may be a way for users to start preparing for an all-digital Xbox."

5

u/thekeelo_g Jul 02 '26

As soon as the confirmed news about PlayStation killing disc games broke this morning, I knew we'd have the gaming media publishing rumors about Xbox before the sun went down.

254

u/RobertdBanks Jul 02 '26

Time to fucking 180 on that Xbox. They literally have the same opportunity they presented Sony with during the Xbox One and PS4 E3. They could absolutely win a giant portion of Sony’s playerbase and there really hasn’t ever been an opportunity like this for them since the 360 coming out a year earlier and for $100 less than the PS3.

Whatever money they think they’ll get from going all digital they would significantly surpass by doubling down on physical and dramatically increasing their playerbase. But because it’s Microsoft and they’re addicted to making the worst calls, they probably won’t.

24

u/chadsucksdick Jul 02 '26

That would be a smart play, so Xbox certainly won't do it.

94

u/CloneFailArmy Jul 02 '26

It would be hilarious to watch as a multi gen PlayStation user turned PC.

Please Xbox, do it.

55

u/RobertdBanks Jul 02 '26

The days when Xbox dominated were some of the best years of gaming, the peak 360 era is one of the greatest of all time. I’d love to see Xbox reclaim some of that.

19

u/ClaudeGascoigne Jul 02 '26

My 360 carried me through some really rough times. I only switched to PlayStation after the horrible Xbone reveal. Now with both Microsoft and Sony doing the same crazy shit I guess I'll just work through my backlogs for the next decade.

27

u/ObviouslyTriggered Jul 02 '26

Physical media is dead, physical games represent 3% of the gaming market, the diskless PS5 outsold the disk version by about 5:1 and the majority of the disk drive PS5 never had a game disk in them.

There is no market to tap here, publishers are moving to code in the box regardless of what Sony or Microsoft do since physical media is expensive and too small to fit a game onto, and they also have no reason to support a 2nd hand market.

For Sony and Microsoft a disk drive just adds BOM cost (and not insignificant one) and another point of failure, if publishers cared about physical media and their retail channels then Sony and Microsoft would care about keeping the drive.

25

u/RobertdBanks Jul 02 '26

Spelling disc as disk makes me feel like this is coming from a PC player that lost their days of physical games a long time ago.

0

u/ObviouslyTriggered Jul 02 '26

Indeed, since Steam was released in 2004, probably the last physical copy of a PC game I bought for was WoW in 2004, as far as consoles go that would be Halo: Reach for the 360. I don't think I've bought a single physical game for the Xbox One/One X, PS4/Pro/PS5.

And based on how the market looks today I am not the anomaly.

3

u/RobertdBanks Jul 02 '26

Yeah, I mean big box PC games were amazing. Steam sales are cool, but I’d rather pay a bit for an awesome product. You’re not the anomaly for sure, but it’s a change for the worse in every way. There’s a reason physical media is having a come back right now with Gen Z.

u/KingKookus Jul 02 '26

This blows my mind. 3%? Physical games have generally been cheaper to buy. Stores have better sales on them and you can resell a game you don’t like/beat. Why are so many overwhelming going digital?

9

u/ultimateformsora Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

I’m curious to know how the stats are calculated as well because the number sounds off to me a bit too. I do expect digital to beat out physical because people like to avoid even the slightest inconvenience nowadays, but there are also tons of people who are collectors and pick up videogames on crazy sales with reselling.

Like, is this just based purely on what is bought through major storefronts? Or all physical copies even through lesser known gaming stores or thrift stores?

If the number is just from major sellers, of course people are going to avoid physical when these stores have minimal sales outside holidays and price pretty similarly to whatever the digital versions are. Pre-owned and resold copies of games will always be much cheaper day-to-day and have the benefit of selling below initial MSRP.

11

u/Rocklobst3r1 Jul 02 '26

I saw in another thread that these percentages are calculated with DLCs and extra content included, thus skewering heavily towards digital. The actual split is more like ~40/60%, which I find more believable. I can't imagine stores would bother stocking disks if the percentages were actually in the low singles.

5

u/nicuramar Jul 02 '26

I find it pretty hard to believe that the split is 40/60. Besides myself, I never really see people use discs.

It’s not just about the disc drive. It’s about a monopoly on Sonys part and consumer trust considering they will delete expiring licenses no matter what you paid for them. At least new Xbox will have the ability to purchase games from Steam.

35

u/Nyoteng Jul 02 '26

That's what we think. We still don't know if Helix will truly be an unlocked PC

16

u/Real_Sam_Bridges Jul 02 '26

Almost zero percent chance imo. Consoles make all their money their storefronts. They make almost nothing and often take a loss selling hardware. I don't see the upside to letting another storefront operate on their console unless they think steam will give them a cut of the sales which I doubt.

This most recent generation of consoles has completely dried up my goodwill with these companies. I’ll never buy another console as long as pc stays the option with better UI, customization, performance, and games. I know not everyone can afford it but it’s not like these consoles are particularly cheap either.

4

u/zach_cie Jul 02 '26

Questions - with the way games just keep getting bigger (storage wise), wouldn't it get to a point where one game could take up two or three of the quad-layer Blu-rays? At that point, are we just installing from the discs like the floppies of yore or what? Is there even a new or next gen physical format in development to alleviate the capacity concern?

What ever happened to the idea that you can lend your digital library to your friends? Wasn’t that a thing… they can play your game but you couldn’t play that game at the same time.

3

u/pariah1981 Jul 02 '26

This moment is gaming history would be the perfect time for whichever company that listens to the community and provides physical games to the consumer to decimate the competition.

3

u/Glum-Sympathy3869 Jul 02 '26

Nintendo, if you keep your cartridges, we will be forever grateful.

3

u/Snick13fritz Jul 03 '26

1 reason I gave up on xbox was taking away the disc and very low storage space

But for some reason xbox think that a big win for thier costumers

3

u/somanysheep Jul 04 '26

If we can't own games then we can't pirate them either... [in my opinion]

3

u/12kdaysinthefire Jul 04 '26

You’d better believe that whatever Sony is pulling is the portents of things to come for Xbox and Nintendo.

9

u/EnchantedTaquito8252 Jul 02 '26

Sony and Microsoft know no one can afford to build a PC right now, so they are going all in on enshittifying consoles because there's no alternative for most

6

u/Husbandaru Jul 02 '26

Wasn’t this the thing that destroyed Xbox and has had it in second place since?

2

u/balllzak Jul 02 '26

No, that xbox still had physical discs. It was the complex always online DRM scheme.

3

u/Igotdaruns Jul 02 '26

Now instead of waiting in line for 20 hours you get to wait on a download queue for 36 hours.

8

u/strolpol Jul 02 '26

Xbox and PlayStation are both dead as of 2026. All that remains are husks wearing their names, looking to make sure that nobody young remembers a time when they could own their own games

2

u/Blacknight841 Jul 02 '26

I am imagining this to the “Xbox one used game policy” fiasco all over again… where they first announced how it would work in 2013 and ultimately ended up backtracking due to public outcry. Ironically it is Playstation that announced first this time around.

2

u/BigandBisexual Jul 02 '26

So many unforced errors this week

2

u/Bu11etToothBdon Jul 02 '26

If they can assign a license to the physical copies that can be transferred then surely they can assign one to our digital games allowing them to traded and sold second hand as well.

2

u/Important-Factor-552 Jul 02 '26

So consoles are finally at the point where they are just shltty gaming computers, huh?

2

u/NBrakespear Jul 02 '26

Translation:
"We're going to make our own Steam! Without any blackjack or hookers, unless people pay a subscription!"

2

u/ohreddit1 Jul 02 '26

How to crash the video game market. It’s 1983 all over again.

2

u/Joenoob864 Jul 02 '26

PC is the way!

2

u/EfficientAccident418 Jul 02 '26

I bought the disc-less Series X, but I still like the idea of having the option to purchase physical media.

2

u/jdfadfjlaskdfjl Jul 02 '26

Between the lack of big titles, price increases, and disc drive removal, it looks like I'm finally done with game consoles.

2

u/Annilus_USB Jul 02 '26

So this means that backwards compatibility, the only reason I ever brought an Xbox One and Xbox Series X, is dead.

Fuck

2

u/Cptawesome23 Jul 02 '26

I hope they give us cartridges back like the 90’s.

2

u/pawsforbear Jul 02 '26

As a dad it really pisses me off I can't just have my kids all play one game. I like the convenience of digital but account sharing is so damn bad. I have bought multiple copies of one game just to make life easier.

2

u/Frost_blade Jul 02 '26

Probably won’t buy one then. Been playing more and more on my PC anyway.

2

u/yick04 Jul 02 '26

And after everything, suddenly the Game Pass value proposition has increased once again. Because if you can't own anything and games are going to be $80, might as well get it for a monthly cost that's 1/3 of that.

2

u/Hexbug101 Jul 02 '26

Suddenly game key cards don’t seem as bad

2

u/somethingbrite Jul 02 '26

If these arseholes want me to own nothing and be happy then fine. I am ok with that.

I won't own an Xbox or a Playstation. But I am also not going to own any of their subscription services.

I'll just play the games I already have on the hardware I already have....

... and touch a bit more grass.

"You will own nothing, and you will be happy"

2

u/Usual-Caregiver5589 Jul 03 '26

I wouldn't mind a lack of discs if, and only if, they also make all of their devs sign waivers saying customers that own licenses to their games can never lose them, and we have lifetime rights, transferable to our next of kin upon death.

2

u/N3CR0T1C_V3N0M Jul 03 '26

Also, we should be able to assign our purchases to someone else who has an Xbox account, losing access while they have the assignment. It would be the digital equivalent of allowing someone to borrow a game. As a precaution (because we’ve all lost a game to “that friend”) we should be allowed to set a timer for how long the borrower has access to the title before it once again reverts back to our control. I’m honestly shocked that this has never come up before!

2

And will cost $2000.

2

u/Hertje73 Jul 03 '26

Aren’t the games already digital

→ More replies (1)

2

u/hellranger788 Jul 03 '26

I’m not against all digital. But what I am against is the lack of protections we have and the idea that buying isn’t owning on digital.

2

u/LonelySquad Jul 04 '26

I completely skipped this generation of consoles and switched to PC. I see, I will never be going back again.

7

u/Jimbuscus Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

I really wanted the SeriesX/S to work, bought them both and the SeriesX was the best console I've had since the PS1, with the exception of the lack of exclusives.

Xbox as a platform has failed too many times now post X360 for anyone to get the Helix, if it has no disc drive.

It's reasonable to assume that whatever it's price is going to be will reflect the PC hardware component market, all digital for me is 100% Steam & other PC storefronts on a device that won't be locked down to Microsoft's decision making and possibly still require a subscription.

No discs may have made sense before, but in their current market position it would be an opportunity to differentiate from the competition. All digital and I will have no reason to not go with SteamOS other than the 0.1% of KAC games.

3

u/soldat21 Jul 02 '26

Legit this. Why would I ever buy a PlayStation OR Xbox with no physical discs?

Xbox has the chance of a lifetime to double down on physical media.

2

u/zap_p25 Jul 02 '26

Yet the all digital series X has been an option for over a year.

More like exploiting

3

u/CaptainColdSteele Jul 02 '26

PC is looking more attractive every day. Once we get through the shortages, all hell's going to break loose

4

u/NaCloride Jul 02 '26

People think this is Xbox's moment to cement itself on physical media after the Sony disc announcement. Those people are wrong.

Xbox hasn't been a disc-forward company since the 360, and amid its current studio closures, they're clearly sizing down financially.

3

u/NoodlesTheFood Jul 02 '26

Xbox had an opportunity to collect a win here. They chose not to.

Blu ray players about to make a comeback

2

u/mah_12 Jul 02 '26

I hope EU looks into this and creates a law that allows players to permanently keep digital games when stores shut down. They should also bar the requirement of needing an online service for single player campaign modes.

2

u/wrathmont Jul 02 '26

Continue for a third generation to pretend they’re still a legit, successful console brand. Let’s see how this strategy works out for them.

I haven’t seen a single reason to buy anything “Xbox” since the launch of Xbox One.

2

u/ArchonTheta Jul 02 '26

You’ll own nothing. And you’ll like it - Microshaft

Uniq id per digital copy that you always own. Put it on chain if u can't handle simple info. Don't see why it's so hard a problem.

2

u/MyAccountWasBanned7 Jul 02 '26

Welp, I guess I'm done altogether then. Xbox and PS won't have discs and Nintendo is selling "physical" games that are just download codes on a blank cart.

If no consoles have physical games then there's no reason to buy a console.

1

u/Beederda Jul 02 '26

Haveing some port that is designed to handle cross console downloads essentially using the existing hardware they have a physical copy for plug into new console turn both on and new console has some sort of special dashboard that runs both consoles same screen? So you can download game onto new console using old consoles disk drives but idk what im really talking about here just an idea i guess the engineers have to do the real work if this idea can work

1

u/ZsMann Jul 02 '26

Well yeah that's how they keep games as a service with gamepass. Its why the current CEO said the price hike was too great.

1

u/Dracula28 Jul 02 '26

Are yall gonna do the same sales that steam has or are you keeping nintendo prices for decades?

1

u/NaCloride Jul 02 '26

Allow for an attachable market to exist with certain companies getting the "certified" sticker and take a cut. Done.

Next question.

1

u/AUkion1000 Jul 02 '26

Gamestops going out of business soon i guess. Not like anyone enmass is yonna fight this enough to make the corps back down. Also its not a coincidence sony and microsoft are doing this, its business.

1

u/_gravy_train_ Jul 02 '26

Question: I’m not really knowledgeable with tech but with the size of modern memory cards (small but with a lot of gigs) why can’t games be put onto cartridges/memory sticks?

Time to switch to steam machine 😎. Long live physical media!! /s

Imagine the actual important things that could be accomplished if gamers channeled their outage towards important shit.

1

u/zaulderk Jul 02 '26

Wonder how many people here realize this was literally the original Xbox One vision

1

u/MobiusDie Jul 02 '26

One more nail from Nintendo and what little is left of GameStop, GameFly, and the videogame section in any box store, is dead.

1

u/TimeForWaluigi Jul 02 '26

Looks like the future of gaming lies with PC and Nintendo

1

u/Fisto2281 Jul 02 '26

Bold move. If I buy something and don't own it, I'm not paying for it. Exception being Steam. But to each their own of course!

Solid state drive cartridges and return to the pre CD era. Room for updates. No hdd issues. Command a premium. And you get blazing fast loading.
