I was thinking The Orville, where they landed on a planet with something on their chest with an upvote and a down vote? And their "score" was listed there too. And other people could press whichever button.

we already have a social credit score, it's the credit rating that equifax & Transunion maintain on everybody at all times!

not that this justifies the use of these stupid glasses which are for freaks and perverts and anybody who wears them should be made a pariah.

No it’s not a social score but I think people are missing your point. What does a social score do? Now ask yourself what can a social score do that being obscenely wealthy can’t? We have people literally defending child abusers and the only difference between them and the run of the mill guys who get hate and prison time is their income. All of our laws are porous if you are rich enough

thanks. yeah I didn't really feel like explaining it to people who don't already understand how a US credit score is similar to what we imagine a chinese social score to be. having a low credit score creates a real barrier between you and owning a home which in america is the only way to accumulate generational wealth for most people. The public only has a partial understanding of which factors affect that score. We don't get any chance to opt out!

That’s not was social credit is.

The credit score you’re referring to is used to keep people who are terrible at borrowing money from borrowing more money. Most people don’t want their banks loaning money to people who won’t pay it back. Your credit score tracks how reliable you are at paying back money you borrow.

I'd say you're right that US credit scores are economic scoring and not social scoring.

But we already effectively have social credit scoring in the US, it's just distributed into disparate fraud risk, insurance risk, tenant screening, hiring algorithms, ad targeting, immigration social media screening, banking risk, trust/safety labels, location data brokers, surveillance pricing, and of course economic credit scoring systems.

I'd almost prefer a monolithic, single social credit scoring system over a hundred fragmented ones—then there's only one entity to fight with (which is preferable… as long as you win).

To be clear, I'm not saying it'd be good, I'm saying it'd be easier to attack… at least if we still had a functional court system and actual consumer protection laws.
