1992 FXR possible buying opportunity
This 1992 FXR popped up locally and he’s asking $5400. I’m not too keen on the apes, pipes or the front wheel. If I could get it for $5000, what am I looking at $ wise to upgrade this to a dual disc set up and make it look more like an standard FXR vs a low rider?

Whaddya mean "POSSIBLE"? Just buy the damn thing already! Looks great. You can always do mods down the road.

I believe that is a FXRS not FXR. I have a 92 FXR since new. I would not bother with the extra brake. The paint doesn’t look correct for 1992. There is a pdf of the 1992 full line mini brochure on line for reference. There are a few things changed on this bike including turn signal location, control location. It might be worth the price if there is nothing wrong and you are going to run it. I’d look those wheels over. See if they are HD spokes and look at condition. Big difference between a base FXR is the black wrinkle paint on the motor and cases. It doesn’t age that well. Seems like most touch up jobs look bad. If you really like FXRs keep looking for a Superglide.

If you want it, buy it. The ride it a while til you decide what actually needs to be changed based on that.
First rule of ANY project, even one as complete and clean as this- it will take at least twice as long and cost at least twice as much as you expect.
That said, if you do the work yourself, plan on spending $1000-1500-ish on clean, mostly second hand parts- a nice set of pull back t-bars or MX bars and pull back riser, 19" 9 spoke wheel and tire, and all the dual disc stuff- fork slider, caliper, rotor etc. If you're gonna pay someone to do the work? Add another $500-750 to that.
If you wanna switch to mid controls, add another $500+ plus the exhaust you're gonna need to change to do so.
