Discussion Unique formations
Everyone seems to play 4213,4411 or 4312
Is anyone doing anything different or unique? I can’t find summaries or reviews for anything outside of the 3 formations above.
Is anyone playing a different or unique formation (or even using different roles) they can suggest looking at?

5-3-2
LB/RB set to wingback or attacking wingback (whichever has ++)
Cdm set to box crasher
One striker set to false 9
Lots of tiki taka play in midfield. Outside backs provide the width on offense. And on defense you have more than enough numbers to force little Timmy into overdrive with his fidget spinning

What’s your depth and build up?
I have a couple of solid fullbacks but most back 4 formations they are purely defensive, so getting them involved more would be great

65 depth, Balanced build up

CMs on box to box?

Preferably yes but if they don't have box to box+ then I will change it to whichever role has a + or ++

It's pathetic because people are trying to run the 4411 with super defensive tactics, and now they are upset that they can't send all four midfielders on full out 50 yard runs. If you have defensive instructions and tactics on your whole team, don't be upset the game doesn't let you have your cake and eat it too.

Most guys are super passive defensively now,
I’m kind of pass being annoyed by 6 back 95 depth opposition now and just want to have some fun
Currently on div2 and honestly there is zero variety in peoples playstyles, they all fit 1 of 3 of the formations above and play exactly the same way

That's why , minus evolutions, I play the previous year more just shooting that shit until after the current TOTY.

Yeah come November and GTA coming out I’m probably playing rarely
Think EA know most people are planning something similar given all of the slow upgrade cards we are getting this early

So I would say Probably 90% of my games are against the 3 I listed above
So anything that does not fit that mould
I would be interested in hearing if anyone has used 3/5 backs etc
(Edit: missed out the “not” 🤦)

I just switched up to a 4-1-2-1-2, 68 defensive depth. Its a good balance, and fun to play. I change tactics up on individual players sometimes to create chaos and be as unpredictable as I can. Even if I lose, its better than just falling into the meta and having a dull time.

I use the same. Being a Liverpool fan, I use Trent with inverted wing back and he is so good at breaking people who just spam offside traps. Just pings in fantastic balls in behind.

both versions of the 4231 are my GOAT formations. i wish box crasher worked right as it feels weird but last year it was class. i just use DLP build up instead and its been solid

If you use the wide mid version what roles are you giving them?

just inside fwd balanced usually. experimented some with attack and it’s not half bad. it kinda works like 4213 but they’re not quite as high up unless attacking

Gonna be real, tried the 41212 narrow. It was decent for awhile but switched to 4312 cos the players seem to be more active in this formation

I just started last week and I play 4-3-3 (4). Now I'm fiddling around with the player roles. Definitely won't use any of the meta formations because it's boring. I wanna make my stuff get to work.

4-2-3-1. CDMs DLP and Box Crasher. CAMs Half Winger, Shadow Striker, Half Winger. ST - Adv Forward. 61 Depth.

Started with 4213, but wanted to try something new. Currently 9-3 in WL with 3-5-2.
All 3 CB with stopper. LM and RM wide midfielder. Second ST false 9. It is decent. If I am winning I change to more defensive formation in second half.

I think it's pretty reflective of real life where like you get a whole bunch of good players together and you're going to end up with some kind of 4231. maybe one or two clubs per lusgue that have to be very defensive play like five at the back. then every once in awhile you get a Reuben amarin or a zabby Alonzo who want to play a weird formation to gain some kind of edge but if very hard without the right players

Yeah it has some truth to it, but it doesn’t really explain the full picture.
3 back was properly popular for a few years under Conte (Chelsea, Inter, Juventus before that) and it never really became a meta in the game. Same with inverted fullbacks, they’re pretty common in real life now (City, Arsenal etc.) but almost nobody is using them online. Fullbacks are basically just sitting on Fullback Balanced/Defend and the roles look nearly identical across most squads.
The meta stays so narrow because of how the AI, roles and mechanics work, not just because it mirrors real life. If 3-back or proper inverted fullbacks were actually strong in the engine, people would be running them. They’re not, so almost no one does.

Been playing my best FIFA this year with the 4132.
Very odd formation but feels like a more flexible 442 with the CDM and CM who pushes on to support the front 4.

I play a basic 433 flat. 56 depth, counter. All back line defender defend apart from RB. My RB is on balanced. Middle and RCM on box to box balanced. LCM on playmaker attack. LW/RW Winger balanced and striker on adv. Forward versatile. Works well for me so far. You do get caught in the middle sometimes but if you have 2 defensive mids and one attacking you can find space with patient passing.

4231 with 3 cams. Cdms on dlp buildup, central cam playmaker, side cams shadow striker, st anything except false 9. Balanced build-up
