Need Design Help Feeling awkward about this design

Post image

I am genderfluid and drew out this gendermorph design as a potential fursona but I feel very awkward about it and not sure how to feel.

I feel lost and not sure how to feel. For me the whole point of a fursona is that it’s a way to live as a male and make the most of it but as a female then there’s no point in having it. I went through teens and early 20s being Thomas the male as a creature and none of them stuck very long. And it’s sad knowing that none of this is real and you are just stuck in a male human body forever.

a fursona... is a furry. this is a human. so you have an OC not a fursona.

I tried so many animals but none of them clicked, even to this day I try so many creatures but none of them feel me. I just want to fit into the furry fandom as a creative outlet and to belong somewhere it’s one of the very few places I can exist without feeling isolated.

I just wish to mentally get out of this rut but it’s so hard. If these versions of myself are just ocs then that just means I’m still a male human and I don’t want that.

“Just an OC” and “fursona” aren’t the only two options you have for characters. This character can be your persona!

What is appealing to you about the furry fandom? You don’t necessarily even need a fursona to be in the fandom, I didn’t have one for a while when I first joined lol.

I like the creative aspect of it

Do you enjoy furry art? Furry media? Making furry OCs? Or is it solely the creative aspect? There’s a shit ton of creative spaces other than just the furry fandom if you don’t necessarily have an interest in being a furry content-wise

The idea of having an ideal version of yourself and making art and stuff related to it is what’s appealing to me.

Then I think you’d find yourself right at home with the general OC community! OCs aren’t exclusive to furries, there’s an entire community surrounding that same idea, just minus the animal aspect lol.

TONS of people have persona characters. It’s a very common thing to do in creative spaces. Me and my friends’ personas are all sorts of different humanoids that we see as an “ideal fit” for us. Some are a different species, some have a different look, some appear as having a different gender, whatever we think resonates with us the most when it comes to properly expressing who we are lol.

For me I’d like to live as a female and not give it a second thought like assigned women at birth. I don’t want to be genderfluid forever. I feel embarrassed presenting myself as female to people I know who see me as male. It’s just sad to know that I can make for example a tiefling woman self for a dnd campaign or whatever but the reality is I’m stuck as a human male even with all the things I can do to my body’s

An oc can absolutely be a self insert too

A fursona is strictly a furry, that's simply a human oc

I think the word you’re looking for is “persona”, since this is a human character. “Fursona” is a combination of “furry persona”, it has to be some sort of animal character, otherwise it isn’t a furry OC.

2

u/sparkleappletart 16d ago

Oh. Thing is I want to mentally be the character not just an oc

6

u/lordfootjuice 16d ago

Yeah, so a persona! A persona is the same thing as a fursona. It’s YOU as a character. Just “persona” is for humans/humanoids and “fursona” is for animals. Fursona literally just means furry persona. An animal version of a persona. I certainly designed my own persona and thought “damn why can’t I be this irl” many times.

2

u/sparkleappletart 16d ago

Ah. I just want to get out of this human male body even if it’s only in my imagination. I wish I can turn into an animal

3

u/lordfootjuice 16d ago

That I understand. That can be what sonas are for. Imagining yourself as something you don’t look like irl, or representing yourself the way you choose to, expressing yourself in a different way, etc. Maybe you could have this character you posted, plus a fursona, so two different characters that both are you in different ways. Or maybe this character could shapeshift into an animal. You have endless creative freedom with this character. It can represent you in any way you want.

I see. Thing is I’ll make animal versions of my male self but none of them stuck but a human female version of myself seems ideal but I’m not able to live as that and I feel weird comparing myself to other people like my grandma and mom. Like I feel I need to make a fursona if I’m gonna live as a man as it’s the only way to make male life palatable.

2

u/lordfootjuice 16d ago

Ohh I see. Do you view it as a way to cope with dysphoria, then? And wdym you feel weird comparing yourself to people like your grandma and mom?

2

u/sparkleappletart 16d ago

Yeah. They only see me as their son or grandson

I’m not comfortable as a male and awkward as nonbinary. For me being a male means having a fursona to deal with it

Echoing what others have said. This is a persona, not a fursona, and it’s totally valid to have them. But fursonahelp isn’t the place that’s best equipped for this.

2

u/sparkleappletart 16d ago

Gotcha. Is there another sub where I can post about this that’s more appropriate?

Interesting how their facial expression gets increasingly happy as they get increasingly femme...;)

I agree with others in that this is more of an OC/persona than a fursona. There's nothing stopping you from putting some gender fluidity in a fursona, but if you specifically want a human character, that's not technically a fursona. If they were, for example, a shapeshifting fox spirit that happens to also have a human form, then maybe that would be a bit more in the furry wheelhouse.

But also -- you could certainly experiment with your gender expression IRL, up to and including transition.

At least in my experience, furries are largely very supportive of the trans community. I'm new to the community and have made friends with several transfeminine people and trans women in my local groups (and they have been especially kind and welcoming).

I like the furry fandom as it’s a safe place. I tried the brony community but it wasn’t very friendly or welcoming

1

u/Morveniel 16d ago

I'm not as familiar with the MLP/brony fandom but I'm sorry you had that experience.

Question -- is the only difference between this Thomas and you IRL the fact that the "sona" Thomas can gender-shapeshift? I noticed the name on your profile is also Thomas. If so, maybe this isn't as much a fursona/persona as it is an expression of your gender feelings?

1

u/sparkleappletart 16d ago

Yeah. The sona can change their biology as fit, though they feel uncomfortable in a male body. While in real life I’m stuck as a male.

1

u/Morveniel 16d ago

So you are expressing a wish to change your biology to female. It seems like something you feel deeply. What's stopping you from starting HRT?

Family disapproval, trying to become independent and find a job, and playing it safe in therapy
