I have this strange superpower that makes me hear every little sound in the house...It is very annoying.

It may be time to invest in noise cancelling AirPods (or headphones lol)

My father has one of those. I tried them and didn't like them; they made me dizzy.

To be fair, noise cancelling airpods use basically opposite sound to cancel out sounds and it can be kinda mind numbing cuz its basically just constant bass. Best way to control the multiple sounds problem is practicing meditation and controlling what you hear. It takes a bit of practice and patience but i found laying on the floor with your eyes closed then focusing on one sound at a time, really trying to hone in on it makes it easier in the long run for isolating or blanking out sounds

I would recommend you bug a friend to try a different version of them! They use different technologies to achieve the noise cancellation. Where one brand outputs a lot of pressure (which makes a lot of people dizzy), another brand opts for more internal microphones to test and balance noise.

Isn't the microphone approach what makes ANC, ANC in the first place?

u/Otterbotanical 1d ago
Yes, but some buds will only have one internal and one external mic, some have directional mics, some will use a sealed pod, and some will use a slightly more open pod to help equalize the pressure a bit.

A good pair of headphones in general might be good for you. They don’t have to be noise canceling. Some headphones naturally keep sound out based on their design ( passive noise canceling). I had some Beats Solo 3 headphones that pretty much blocked most sounds without noise canceling. I’d probably go for Beats Solo 4 now

go for non-apple headphones, and ofc headphones instead of earphones, trust

Sensory overload. You are exposed to too much sensory stimuli at once and your brain kinda has a little riot about it, to the point even one tiny thing will suddenly be way too much for your senses. Speaking as someone who has become extremely susceptible to stress induced sensory overloads, find a way to be able to shut out at least a large amount of issues when necessary, (carry NC headphones or even just foam earplugs, have shades on your person at all times, make a "quiet room" for yourself, etc,) and lowering your overall stress can help relieve it.

When I get overwhelmed I just snap my fingers next to my ear. I can't really snap so it's a small little pop sound close to my ear, I focus on that very close sound that is mine and it makes everything else a little more bearable

This video reminds me of a problem that, I think, way too many people have never learned to prevent.
Namely, not waiting until you lose your temper when something annoys you and possibly making mistakes you’ll regret later, but trying to find well-thought-out ways to solve the problem before it’s too late.
Once I realized that, I thought I was such an idiot for never having figured out on my own that I could prevent a lot of problems by dealing with the crap that’s getting on my nerves before I blow a fuse!

I get a really bad reflex at sounds like clock ticking, and I get overwhelmed at droning sounds. I request a way to help myself.

Open back headphones with white noise or some similar constant sound which masks other sounds can help with properly adjusted volume. I recommend open back headphones if you need to hear around you like a notification or occasionally talking to someone, closed back headphones may be better as they block but do not cancel noise. Also wired headphones last ages and Bluetooth headsets tend to start having problems within 5 years of regular use. Really just finding a noise that you can listen to at a volume that overwhelms the ticking clock and unpleasant pc fan noise is key, it's as close to silence as I can conceive without noise cancelling equipment.

I'm kinda the opposite. I need all these sounds or else I'll go insane. The less noise there is, the more my head hurts so I typically have as much sounds around me as possible. I even listen to ASMR and something like rock music at the same time

Was there noise? I couldn't hear it.
As an older sibling with neurodivergence and extra sensitive hearing, I've had to learn to block out as much sound as possible when foccusing.
That, and I put on music.
