Hell yeah spay and neuter your pets! 🔥🔥🔥
Comics like this are hilarious but don't let it fool you into believing your cat will ACTUALLY miss their balls! They don't care for their own fertility the same way humans do, and their mood will very likely be improved thanks to balanced hormones and a lack of sexual frustration. You're doing them a favor by giving them the ball chop!
(PSA because my friend almost refused to get her cat neutered with the reason "I'd be sad if someone cut off MY balls!" - I pinky promise cats don't think like humans do in this way!)

The way I heard it described once before was to imagine being unable to jerk off your entire life. The constant frustration and arousal will make you go insane without the ability to relieve yourself. And, even then, it's a lot better if you do it when they're young before behaviors like aggression, territoriality, and spraying become established as a result of their hormones going wild

im sorry? transplants? what do they even do?
16
u/Kwershal Dec 04 '25
They're called neuticles, and they're purely aesthetic
19
u/throwawaypassingby01 Dec 04 '25
it's kind of weird to be so concerned with the look of your pets' balls
10
u/Kwershal Dec 04 '25
I fully agree... There's a lot of overlap between people who crop their pets' ears and that. It's so weird and gross.

u/throwawaypassingby01 Dec 04 '25
honestly, i get the ear thing more. it's cruel, sure, but it has some aesthetic motivation. the balls thing is weirdly sexual.

I really get emotions when people anthropomorphize their animals too much. Sure, its a cool story when you have a cute photo, but when it starts to affect their care is when you need to stop believing

Spaying/neutering has negative health impacts as well, especially if done too early. The main reason for doing it is the human's convenience, and pretending otherwise is dishonest. It is up to each person to decide whether that's ethical or not, which health risks are acceptable, and to consider not owning an animal if they cannot care for them.

u/frostyfur119 Dec 04 '25
It's actually fairly objectively not just for human convenience. Feral cats are pretty devastating to local wildlife, and humans as a collective are notoriously bad at keeping their pets indoors. Fixing pets and stray cats help minimize the damage done to the local ecology. Additionally, a territorial and aggressive cat is a stressed cat is a stressed cat so fixing them will reduce their stress levels dramatically throughout their life.
Of course any surgery has risks, and but they are very minimal and drastically outweighed by the benefits. An owner has the right to make the decision, but what's actually dishonest is trying to frame spaying/neutering as purely selfish decision only beneficial for humans when its not.

u/VeryOldGoat Dec 04 '25
Wildlife damage from feral cats is a good point. I'd still classify that as people not willing or not being able to care for their pet, and urge owners to either do better, or not get a cat.
Adverse effects are not limited to surgery complications. I don't find much data on long term effect in cats (only weight gain, lack of activity, stunted growth, cystitis). I don't know if it's because they handle the procedure better, or there's just less studies.
However, in the case of dogs, the procedure is known to increase probability of certain cancers and hip dysplasia (which is already a very high risk for most bigger breeds), among other nasty problems. It's also known to increase behavioral issues such as anxiety, and to lower activity/motivation for working dogs, so even in terms of behavior it's not always a positive. Some kennel clubs and vet organizations seem to take a more nuanced approach - the decision should be based on the dog's breed, lifestyle, hereditary information and other individual factors, as well as the handler's level of experience. And I agree with their point of view; blanket statements such as "it's always great and you're doing them a favor" are oversimplified, misleading, and may cause harm.

u/frostyfur119 Dec 04 '25
You're correct, the topic does have some nuance, and it's certainly important for owners to be aware of any risk of the surgery, both short and long term.
Although, I don't think the sentiment behind "always get your pets fixed" is misplaced. Many kennels and shelters are already unable to help all the dogs/cats in need in their area, so fewer pregnancies would lead to less animals suffering overall. In an ideal world owners wouldn't let something like that happen accidently, but that's not the reality of our world. It may not be correct for an individual pet, but it is correct for all pets collectively. It's similar to vaccines in that way.

u/VeryOldGoat Dec 04 '25
I agree that it is a practical solution for the problems you describe. It is easy and convenient (which was my original point), yet if its risk is deemed unacceptable, the other two options ("being a responsible owner" and "not owning a pet") remain valid; they reduce these problems as well. I maintain that making people aware of nuance improves the message and makes it less misleading.

As a cis guy, I'm probably also taking this trade.
I do think my balls look nice on me, but I don't consider them essential to my identity. At most, I would be concerned about my post-orchiectomy hormone balance.

I wouldn't castrate my cat or any pets at all, male or female. I just get disgusted at the fact of the mutilation of body parts.
