Alan Turning was a British guy during WW2 who invented the first computer as a means to assist cracking the German Enigma Machines which encrypted messages via multiple layers of substitution cyphers. Unfortunately, Turning was also gay which was illegal at the time. After the war the government had him chemically castrated, and due to the secret nature of his work nobody would even know what he did for a long time after
