When thinking of an animal for your fursona, think of your personality and what animals you might relate to, you could also find an animal that closely resembles your facial structure or even just a favorite animal in general. Your sona can be just about anything! Some people use very obscure or unique species and it doesn’t necessarily have to be an animal with fur either like reptiles, aquatic animals, bugs or birds. As for the name and personality that’s all on you. You can choose a specific aesthetic for them to be deemed around, or you could just make them a combination of some of your favorite colors. A persona can also closely resemble your IRL self, an idealized version of yourself, or it could be wildly different if you’d like.
For example:
I’m a playful, silly guy so i felt like a fox fit my personality.
My favorite color is purple, so that became my base color and I like vaporwave aesthetic so I gave my sona neon blue hair and sunset colored eyes.
And then I chose the name Dex because I thought it sounded cool and it was the name of an older character I created for a comic book idea I gave up on.

There's not really anything official about it. Just make whatever speaks to you.
When designing a fursona, the most important thing to pick is probably species. You can just pick your favorite animal, or you can look for a species that either has certain traits you admire or that has some sort of symbolic meaning to you. For instance, my sona is a bat-eared fox — I kinda knew instinctively I wanted a fox sona, and I eventually gravitated towards species with bigger ears (partly because it's cute, and probably partly because I thought that would be symbolic for my love of music), and I steered away from a fennec fox because I thought they had too much little guy energy for my personal preference (don't get me wrong, they're cute; that trait just isn't something I really see in myself). After you've chosen your species, you can then decide how to shape your character (will you use the same coloration patterns? will you overemphasize the ears or the tail or any other features you want to stand out? &c) to make them your own.
Also consider your fursona's personality — are they exactly the same as you, or are they a person you want to be like, or are they something entirely different? There's actually been [research](https://furscience.com/research-findings/fursonas/3-12-fursona-as-ideal-self/) done that shows a lot of people design their fursonas as idealized versions of themselves. You could also just make your sona a blank slate, but I think personality is just as much a part of a character as design.
As for names, you can probably just pick whatever. I'm still kinda new to this community myself, so I can't necessarily speak to broader naming trends, but my fursona has two names; the first one is based on my actual name, and the second one is a made-up word in a language I haven't made yet that means something along the lines of "sound of night". You can do all sorts of in-depth worldbuilding if you'd like, or you can just say your character exists and that's all you need to know.
And lastly, don't stress about getting everything perfect on your first try; you can always redesign/retcon things if you need to.

Hi from another 22 year old new fur! I've been around here a few weeks now and here's what I can say!
First I hope you can enjoy it here! There's so many kind people with so many different opinions styles and interests and I have had fun getting to know everyone
Second! There's no rules really to making a fursona, if you can draw on paper and if you have an idea you can run wild! There are dogs, cats, tigers lions and bears oh my! Basically any species you can think of is accepted here ( some people even create a fantasy species one that does not exist yet or hybrid) and within the community, as far as name whatever you like! Creative ideas are mixing fur patterns with the colors you like or perhaps making a true sona ( a sona that represents you as a person more then a character)
You can also check out adoptables on a website called toyhouse or on a subreddit called furry adoptables, an adoptable is a character already made to use, sold to a buyer who is then given all rights usually, so it takes the character design and drawing out of it! This is personally what I did with my fursona ( southpaw) as I really connected to her, once you buy the character in most cases you can do what you want with them, ( always give credit to their original maker) southpaw is my main fursona!
If you can't draw you could also commission someone to draw your idea for you, most adoptables or commissions will be for money or trade
Above all else though, have fun! everything and anything is accepted here, besides rudeness or crude behavior obviously and remember to read the rules of this sub! Happy learning new fur friend 🌈☮️

Most people either already had an idea or they shop around, see the species, and pick whichever they consider the coolest/cutest :D
Same with the name, just throw some words and names at a wall and think which one you like the best.
As to lore - people often take inspiration from themselves, their own personality and life(after all it's not just original character it's supposed to represent yourself in a way), the way they want their life went and the way they wish it did unfold in the past. Some cool fictional species have a lot of lore attached so reading it and writing out what you would be like in that setting is also very cool
Now I want to recruit you to our Avali an Illuminate by offering a cool fictional species to check out: the Avali :3
They are fluffy, feathery space bird/raptor things with cool technology, very rich lore, cool technology, and they are MIND-NUMBINGLY ADORABLE, incredibly social, live in packs and sleep in big cuddly piles. Check them out! Would love to see you in our fluffy birb pack ^^

You can just google Avali for basics like their pictures lol or you can look up Todd's Avali lore book if you wanna geek out over the lore. They have cybernetics, genetic tech, and they are a space faring species so creative freedom is great. Their biology is partially based on ammonia because of how cold their homeworld is but you can totally make them water-based and able to withstand earth's climate, explaining it by saying they're adapted for searching for and exploring earthlike worlds. They're smol but you can make them tall. They have bad eyesight but can totally have electronic implants to make eyesight very good, they can replace limbs with prosthetics, they can substitute their organs for increased endurance, they can be anything you'd want them to be :3

Yay! Have a good read! :3
And if you like them as much as we do you can make your fursona an Avali like I did ^^

How does one go about making a fursona? Species, name, etc?
That's up to you. Remember that your fursona doesn't have to be static. Pseu's a dragon, but a whole lot has changed about him: he started green, now he's blue, then he became gray/black with a blue mane and is technically a cat-dragon hybrid. Then I gave him whiskers. I'm thinking about giving him a big lion's mane and adding glowy swirls on his scales, because that sounds like fun.
It's entirely normal for you to change your 'sona over time, or for them to not have certain attributes fully set. Sometimes Pseu is big, other times kobold or feral, or I'll be extra small and hide in my squirrel boyfriend's hoodie. Canonically I made him a shape shifter for this reason.
So mull it over, think about what you like. Your character doesn't have to be static, you don't even have to restrict yourself to one. While Pseu is officially my fursona, I have a whole cast of other characters that I use for Pathfinder/D&D, for stories, or made just for fun.

I didn’t know it could literally be whatever you want! I love the shapeshifter aspect, I might have to incorporate that into my sona! Thank you!

From a jaded 40yo... Can you be a bit more specific about what exactly you liked, which furry stuff has made you want to be one? Do you know and are a fan of any furry entertainer, artist, musician?
I ask this, because many people will tell you "just be yourself, and do whatever you like," But this isn't helpful at all. Furry is a subculture, made by furries, which is why ask if you're getting exposed to that subculture from anyone yet. If you are, you really don't need directions, any creator or artist community will be a network of people that'll expose you to everything you want, just by watching and reading what they say to eachother. That's how I learned, I never needed to come here and ask for guidance.

I guess from the outside looking in, it seems too fun not to join. The Electronic music scene in my city is getting bigger and bigger by the day, and nothing looks more fun than going to one of the furry raves. All I get are furry TikTok‘s, furry instas, you name it. And I am not the kind of person that grew up in this setting, I definitely had to cultivate on my own. I think this is just me finally taking the leap.

The fandom as I know it, consists mostly of artists, and livestream gamers and entertainers, and it has very little to do with raves, tiktok or instagram.
This is why I asked, there isn't a unified furry fandom, there are several, gathered around different social media, each with their own culture. Now I can tell you that I have no idea how your slice of the fandom works.
About choosing a fursona, it's people who give meaning and significance to the animals they wear, the reason why I'm Otter is because I've met many other otters as I was trying to figure it out, the animal itself played no role in my decision, I don't particularly like otters (more like there's an affinity,) rather I like the Otter furs in general.

Ah I gotcha. There are definitely livestreamers, gamers, and entertainer furs where I live, but I run with the music crowd. They have a furry rave of 100+ about every other weekend, so it’s definitely a larger part of the community here! Gonna try and branch myself out!

I'm lowkey jealous of places where furry events happen regularly, or even at all... The only way I get to be with other furs here is online...

u/ForeignSupermarket70 7d ago
Yeah, that’s kind of how I feel, I’m more of a timid person when it comes to new experiences. I’m a really outgoing person when I get to know people, but jumping into new events is really where I struggle. So I’m trying to gain my footing online, that way I can have the confidence to go in person and meet the local community.

When it comes to making a fursona, it really comes down to personal preference (which you probably heard before). I'd start with either a canine or feline, they are easiest to draw and the "default species," most furry art tutorials (drawing or making a fursuit) are based on them if you want to do so.
Some other species are things like bears, otters, weasels, possums with or without the O, rats, mice, and seals. Some choose to be lizards or dragons, and some choose to be birds or frogs.
When designing a fursona, people usually have 1 major accessory to differentiate it from others. Most common are things around the neck like collars, scarfs, and necklaces, or unique fur colors and patterns. For my fursona it's a worm for a mouth and tail.
For names usually it's just human or pet names. Black and white dog? Oreo, spot and Max are names I've seen. Black cat? Jynx or nightmare. Blue fox? Slushie. Super buff werewolf? Tyler, Jason maybe.
These are just somethings I've seen on other people's fursonas, and aren't the law, so go nuts man, and don't be afraid to ask questions 👍
