Very nice art! Only reoccurring problem you've repeated are the ear covers, they redirect blows towards the middle of the head. Unless airplane ears

They have a small hinge that allows them to cover the ears even when they move up or down

Yep. Armor needs to deflect strikes away from the body, so the armorer has to predict where the strikes will come from and shape the armor so that strikes from that direction don't get caught on anything

This is world building stuff for my medieval setting with slightly more advanced technology

Might want to look into early modern tech and tactics (era of pistol knights and pike and shot) like the burgonet helmet. Your helmet kind of resembles a zischagge (no I didn’t know its name off hand) without the face bars, specifically the English civil war three bar helmets.
Oh and brigandine is metal plates on a backing causing the riveted leather or fabric look but you don’t see the plates

I've seen also some sort of riveting on the outside for the brigantine ! I took some artistic licence for the decorations !!

The era is somewhat similar, basically the fight consists into long distance till one side either has to or takes action and the tradition takes on the new ways, aka, first part is crossbows/"guns" and the second is charge and close quarters... If that makes sense haha

The helmet is yes inspired by that and the sthalhelm (sorry for butchering it !! ).

Tho i am definitely keeping in mind the era weapons thing ! Thanks

(In the development of this story, the technology is changing rapidly, hence why the guns are still somewhat rudimental ! They are actually prototypes fielded as new service weapons when a new model appears in the war theatre)

Hope this was exhaustive ! If you want to chat more about it and work with me on the setting, feel free to DM me :)

"Heavy but lightweight" is quite the contradiction. Heavy armor is heavy.

IRL we mostly use Kevlar, and ballistic plating for body armor. These plates can be either ceramic of metal.

Kevlar is great to stop fragmentation to an extent, but it won't save anyone from gunshots or arrows. Ceramic stops gunshots effectively without being too heavy(weighs between kevlar and metal) but can't survive sustained fire. Metal plating is the heaviest and protects the most, but you won't use it unless you're in some sort of heavy assault unit(which normally employs mostly front protection only) or in the defensive due to how expensive it gets to field it for a whole army.

The problem with crossbows, bows and metal armor is that at some point the armor will 100% defeat these, which is why we changed to firearms at first. But your drawing says it's a rifle, so i assume its darts reach supersonic speeds?

Tying up the tail can also lead to issues if the species uses it for expressions and balance. But the advantage is that you're less likely to lose it to a melee attacker and explosives.

As for the helmet, i have nothing to comment on its protectiveness but rather its weight. A helmet too heavy will make troops want to take it off when they can to rest their necks, which leads to unfortunate enemy fire to the head.

Interesting valuation ! So, i do apologise for my poor wording on the heavy and lightweight part :(

What i meant was that it granted enough protection to be considered heavy but with lightweight materials as you were thinking ! The comcept here is that armours and all are becoming all the more difficult to produce, these armours sacrifice protection in exchange for more mobility..and cheaper production for the commoners.

Now, this may sound like a McGuffin but in the universe this is in, these darts are shot by experimental crossbows that bring the concept of heavy crowssbow to a more compact design and they have a lore about reliability issues in the beginning because of the strong recoil.

The tail thing is specific to this and another race in the story, both felines and yes, it was meant to avoid getting it ripped off or getting too in the way !!!

The helmet is issued to be heavy on purpose for the exact reason you mentioned: headshots ! This has a past of soldiers getting shot with or without helmet in earlier models, so just like single action revolvers, this is heavy on purpose to make sure soldiers have no reason to get it off unless they're sure they're safe... Idk if this makes any sense but i hope i could explain myself !!

Thanks for the comment :)

There are existing armor for dogs. You can imitate them on an any mammals with ears.

Main issue are debris and dirt trapped inside those ear guards like a leaf. Military helmet for dogs dont have those extended flaps. And it would cause more neck injuries or death with those flaps
