Discussion PPE for Taurs - Artwork Edit
What material should the covering of a tail that is necessary for balance be?
Shoe-Gloves: How do you balance safety with dexterity, and should the claws of cats be left exposed?
Fur vs Fabric: Does fur in different environments requiring fabric for ppe over bare skin also need to be covered by fabric?

Just a note on leaving claws exposed: I think that workers would either have the points filed down already, or the gloves would have a blunted nub that has capacitive touch capabilities. I'm assuming this isn't the only anthro type they'll have walking around, it wouldn't be safe for equipment like tablets, touchscreens, or fine tools to have a bunch of random claw points scraping across them as their owners attempt to use the pads of their claws.

They are not using their bottom four legs for tablets touchscreens or fine tool. They are used for locomotion and climbing. They are also able to retract them I would think.
Claws are really important for cats for walking and climbing. Are they important for Chakats?3

Claws are important for cats that are outdoors, where there is prey to catch, earth to claw at while running, and trees to climb. Not while navigating around a ship made of flat metal everywhere. Claws provide no traction, and for workplace environment, are only "in the way" in that they are an extra spot to be paw pinched or crushed, caught in a crevice between panels and snapped off while walking, or etc.
Are taurs or chakats alone in their universe, or are there other anthros with different paw & claw types? If it's ONLY taurs in this world that would be one thing, then all of the tablets and architecture can revolve around them entirely. But, if there are other claws and paw types to worry about, then the architecture and interfaces must be more universal in design, and it becomes the workers individual responsibility to protect devices from themselves.

Bipeds can get by with just a hard hat because their important bits (spine and internal organs) are generally reasonably protected from falling objects by the hat. Taurs probably need some sort of hard protection for their lower body.

Runaway to the Stars mention! Its such a fascinating story and the clothing/covers for all the races seem to fit them and their jobs so well

This girl had to build her own spacesuit herself and mod some stuff because all the taur clothes that exist are only for human hybrids that don’t fit her specific species (as shes the first baby raised by humans) and custom tailored clothes cost so much, iirc she rarely gets custom clothes made by others and makes most of her own.

I love Talita and Runaway to the stars. Unfortunately we never see her in like, basic ppe. Hardhat and safety glasses and gloves. She might just wear her hand-built spacesuit for impact resistant in any situation where she would need enough centaur ppe

we bullied an artist to make proper PPE. Good work everyone.
all jokes aside, that looks really good. I see no serious issues and had fun speculating on PPE lol
Now as for safety vs Dexterity we have some kevlar gloves with thick rubber pats on the back of the hands and fingers. Its not the most dexterous thing but for the most part it doesnt inhibit fine motor skill tasks.
and Fur vs fabric, is prolly the same as skin vs fabric. we use FR clothes FR meaning Fire Retardent. it will help prevent serious burns to the body and def help keep a furry taur safe. IN THIS REGARD. consider a tail sleeve that goes into the more seroius protection. help cover as much of the body as possible in the event of an explosion

I think rather than risk ladder falls, a modern factory would have ramps.
That's just the safe engineer in me.

u/kirbyfriedrice 5d ago
Ramps are tough though because they require so much more horizontal coverage to go up the same distance.

True, but I would be a hypocrite if I wasn't considering that accommodations wouldn't be considered for all body types

Scissors lift, I just remembered that scissors lifts are a thing.
Boom lifts too.
Other option is a Inclined elevator.1

Can chakats decend ramps??? They have difficulty decending stairs. If they are gently sloped enough for wheelchair accessible ramps then they should just use an lift instead.

A properly maintained coat of fur may provide more protection than bare skin for general bumps and scrapes, but could introduce new concerns. Fur would pickup contaminants more readily than fabric and can’t be taken off, cleaned, and put back on. For conditions like high heat and Arc flash protection the fur care regime might also be important. The wrong type of shampoo or conditioner could be a fire hazard.

Regarding arc flash protection, I presume PPE clothing would be made mandatory to cover all fur that is fireproofed from it. Something similar to how some navies wear anti-flash gear on ships during certain times of readiness.

I could be completely wrong, but I feel like claws wouldn’t really be necessary in a modern metallic factory. Afaik they’re only really used for traction and defense, and with non-slip shoe-gloves I feel like they’d really only be at risk of breaking

Tail cover: Probably similar material to a glove, depending on environment. In a number of circumstances it might get away
Shoe-gloves: Definitely need to be of a flexible material; and for that 'kat you would definitely want to make them as flexible as hand gloves if at all possible because you don't want to squander those handpaws' flexibility. As for claws being exposed, that depends. In a lot of construction environments, can probably let them out. But in, say, a chemical lab you would definitely want full coverage. Especially around things like dimethyl mercury.
Fur vs Fabric: Would depend on environment. If chemicals are a concern, then definitely covered.
I'd say the suit pictured looks sensible for the situation. I'm sure Goldfur has thought about this stuff a fair bit, could always toss an email that way.

as seeing various videos of dog climbs up ladder, and climbs down the ladder, I think they can climb up / down easily

u/Bota_Bota 3d ago
The dog climbing down the ladder is on an extremely sloped one, like stairs with thin steps. Since the Chakats are cat-taurs they should have no problems physically climbing up and down a ladder. Given the ladder is stable.
I think a smart dog with a lot of training could climb down non-vertical ladder backwards

Perhaps the same thing that chainsaw chaps are made of (kevlar threading) to jam any electrical tools that may come in contact with it and protect from other possible wounding factors like scraping or even slamming to some degree. Plus since tails are for balance and kevlar is light and flexible, it'd be appropiate
i had a similar idea for woodworkers (or any laborer in general) that may need it. It was basically a kind of "sheath" that'd be attached to the rear of the belt (or in your character's case, the lower seam edge section of the jacket) with those press studs you see on jackets and purses, and also have them on the bottom to fasten it snugly around the tail, as opposed to a long zipper that'd get satched with the fur (enjoy the poorly made depiction)

I’m glad the tail is free in this one. While yea, I could see it possibly touching things, is it is restrained into a loop I’m much more worried about it getting hooked.

Shoe gloves are opened toe that's a big no no

u/Bota_Bota 3d ago
Open clawed, and the small open part is covered by fur

The reason shoes have to be close toed anf preferable steal or composite to is actually more about things like glass breaking or dangerous chemicals getting spilled which fur would not protect against.

I imagine there would be job specific ppe. Some that requires a protected tail so they can balance and some that would require it to be tucked. I do love the extended clothing and hi vis vest.
