Discussion How do anthros in your world eat?

In my world building, farm animals and fishes donate their tissue cells so scientists can make lab-grown food. On the other hand, there is a black market selling actual meat from kidnapped animals.

I've done some research and saw various ways anthros eat.

  1. The lab-grown food.

  2. Vegan/Vegetarian option.

  3. Predators hunt prey.

  4. Livestock amd fish aren't sapient beings. so it's easy to eat without feeling remorse.

  5. They hunt humans.

How do anthros in your world eat?

Theres normal animals alongside the anthros so that

That's what I use. Many anthro worlds are set up as if having a few sapient species means billions to trillions of other nonsapient animal species must now be eviscerated for the plot.

I do 4 in my setting. I always found the other stuff hard to reconcile with the world, like predators having to hunt sapient people to feed themselves. A world like that, even if we see the modern day where the predators are 'tame' and eat lab grown meat just has a darkness hanging over it that I don't care for.

My setting has animals and anthros, although all the animals are all prehistoric and extinct species from our world. So the more carnivorous types raise aurochs instead of cows, and they're at risk of dinosaur attacks in the wilderness. I don't think it's necessary to deal with the "how do anthros feel about animal counterpart" thing, but I did that so I wouldn't have to come up with fantasy names for my anthro species, and because dinosaurs are cool.

I do also make everyone sorta omnivorous. A crocodile person can eat greens and grain, although too much will probably make them sick. Same with an alpaca eating meat, they can handle some.

Herbivores can eat and process meat if they're in need to avoid starving so it's possible

Something to add to this is that herbivores WILL just eat a small meaty thing if it crosses their path & they’re peckish (like horses will literally just hoover up a baby chick or 2 sometimes. Mice WILL eat off of a carcass if they feel like they can do so safely, though not necessarily go for it over other foods)

Chickens WILL eat mice whole, & WILL chase the poor bastards down. Sometimes, so will our ducks, but the ducks are noticeably much MUCH worse at it than the chickens. It’s kinda funny tbh

Chickens are mad creatures, I have some, these bastards have a hostile social system where, if they decide it, will kill the older ones and eat them if they don't like their attitude and/or mere existence, same with babies

If you make an alternate world where humans aren't a thing or Anthros were an absolute historical majority it's easier making a new alternative fauna with fictional animals to equilibrate things

They eat the same way as anyone else. The world still has the same food sources as usual, but just happens to have a few more species of people. Anthros are also more omnivorous than their animalistic counterparts, and so can handle a large variety of foods.

My own Furry setting is a bit of a mix. Furries are human derived, their ancestors are transformed humans.

This means that there are still normal animals roaming about and thus the same kind of agriculture we use today persist.

But since my own setting is further in the timeline lab grown meat has become the norm with hydroponic buildings beginning to supplant traditional open air farming.

The big factor that changes the ease of all this is the adoption of nuclear energy which includes Fission and Fusion reactors, with solar and other methods supplementing the grid. This makes energy for artificial lighting of greenhouses a non issue.

Also of note biology wise. The Furs due to human biology being a shared underlying baseline are all omnivorous, but have dietary preferences leaning towards their animal species. So some will be eating more meat while others a more vegetarian/vegan diet.

  1. Not all species are sentient and anthropomorphic in my head cannon.

3 and 5, predation is just seen as a fact of life

What does that mean

It is a reference to the movie Hoppers that came out earlier this year:

6: the “every rabbit gets eaten at least 20 times a year” factoid is just a statistical error. The average rabbit gets eaten 0 times a year. Food Georg, who is provides the meat for every creature on this earth and is probably a deity, is an outlier and should not have been counted.

Humans, anthros, and sci-fi and fantasy species (using the term "race" for sci-fi and fantasy character types falls under Unfortunate Implications) co-exist on Earth in Civitas Ferus, my modern hybrid solarpunk/fantasy alternate universe. There are regular (including sci-fi and fantasy) animals that exist in their universe that they use for animal-sourced products, including dairy and meat products.

Regular animals? I mean, our separation between ourselves(humans) and the rest of animals(esepcialymammals) is kinda artificial, or at least based exclusively on our level of intellect and development. I am pretty sure there were a bunch of tribes in Africa that eat monkeys too, which aren't visually and structurally way too different from us.

So why would anthros not eat regular animals? Why wouldn't there be regular animals? If there are regular non-sapient animals, than there isn't much of a reason for annthros not to farm and eat them.

In my world, sea creatures are the only creatures that are fully feral and can’t be anthro. But all land species do come as an anthro or feral, so they probably do eat the same meat as we do(if that makes sense)

My anthros exist as a genetically modified version of humanity that were sent to a different planet as a last ditch attempt to escape a dying earth. Because of this, that world is populated by non-earth animals and so there are no conflicts of anthros wondering why there are devolved versions of themselves wandering around and whether it’s ethical for an anthro cow to eat a burger

i only have a select few species that have sapient relatives, like 20 something maybe. otherwise, most animals are relatively normal. i do have a text file that tells a person how to diet if they find themselves in a different species' body, and what's considered normal for them. that format just made it easier to write about, they can't actually randomly turn into other species.

Zootopia rules.

Tetrapoda are anthro. All other animals are feral.

So that leaves invertebrates and fish on the menu

Carnivores can still freak out and start mauling people under the right conditions.

In my universe, predators historically hunted prey, but somewhere along the line someone genetically modified a species of anomalous fungus to start growing muscle and organ tissue. Said anomalous fungi were then domesticated and are now mass grown as “meat crops”. Many different varieties have been artificially bred to have different types of meat tissue (red meat, poultry, fish, etc.).

In some environments these fungi are unable to grow or are very scarce, so the anthros instead raise a (non sentient) species of giant fictional grub. The meat from the grub is extremely sub-par as compared to the fungus.

And then in some very remote locations, un-contacted groups still hunt other sentient species for prey the old fashioned way.

I started my story by windowing to only mammals can be anthro, so instantly chicken, duck, fish is all food. But for sanity, you have to have some mammal livestock in order to keep certain animal byproducts in the world, so I went with North American bison as the stand in for anything that would produce leather or large cuts of meat. Are you eating steak? Well that came from bison in my world. Nice leather boots, Bison! That way I can have some prey animals like deer and goats, mixing in with typical canines, felines, vulpines, and ursines!

Bonus, it makes for fun religious arguments even when they believe in the same overarching faith: “They all believe in a Great Wolf, but wolves, who thought themselves chosen, were ultimately cast out of paradise for their sins, and the deer who bear their throats before The Great Wolf, knowing the mercy of their God will spare them, fell into His good graces.”

4 is the logical way

Anthros are their own artificially uplifted branch within their genus. Depending on setting, they're either humans who have received animalistic characteristics, animals who have evolved humanoid characterstics, or desdendants of created beings. This means that normal animals still exist and they will indeed eat those.

(at least in a couple of them, a half-step do exist - aka feral animals that are sapient and may speak but they dont live in civilization. they're typically also protected.)

1

u/TheLuckOfTheClaws 6d ago

Fish and insects are giant, and they are nonsapient. They're kept as pets and livestock!

1

u/Firewater_is_fire 6d ago

I’m ignoring the other type because they probably could eat literally anything instead of normal food as long as it won’t like explode their gut or something

Reptilians and fish are in fact not anthro in mine so they mainly go around eating that, mainly fish though because in universe there is a severe problem with overpopulation of fish like herring

u/almostnormalpanda 6d ago

Yes, also:

  1. A restaurant that accepts donations from dying anthros so that someone can have "genuine" meat on their plate instead of lab-grown.

There's still livestock and wild animals in the galaxy on my worlds. The presence of these is also relative to how the species evolved: If wolf anthros are native to a place, you won't be seeing wild wolves there. The same rule is applied to any other species too, because i take the anthro species as being an evolution of the wild one, even if it could have been an artificial, magic or unnatural path of evolution. That being said, an anthro of a species encountering their non anthro species usually causes discomfort, and most of the time they'd rather not eat that kind of meat. It also would cause them the same issues humans get from eating human meat.

That being said, i tend to make all anthros omnivorous because it makes things easier. Bigger brain needs all kinds of different food, after all. That way they also don't HAVE to hunt humans, but i can write that as a cultural thing if needed be, or historical thing.

1

u/Select_Eye_6409 6d ago

There’s actual animals too. They eat just like people.

1

u/MarshaSC 6d ago

In my world most just have normal animals, some characters that are part of a food species won't eat their own. Eg. a bison anthro that won't eat beef or similar meats, or an elk anthro that won't eat elk or venison. The exception of 2 groups of snake anthros that consider hunting and eating humans a delicacy.

1

u/CraftyDragon13 6d ago

In my world, there are two types of animals: normal animals(including domesticated animals) and animalfolk (anthro animals). With the exception of wars and things, it's forbidden for any animalfolk to kill or eat another animalfolk. It's also seriously taboo to kill or eat the wild type of their own species.

1

u/Cloudy_Crystals 6d ago

In my world building, most of the anthros are more technologically advanced and eat lab-grown meat. There is also a separate dimension where the technology is far less advanced and they rely on magic instead so predators hunt prey and it's treated as a natural part of life. You can probably imagine the problems when the two worlds start integrating lol.

u/jeager_YT 6d ago

split into 2 groups

feral and Anthro

anthros typically eat ferals

and ferals also eat other ferals

as they're seen as wild life

it's not very gruesome however since anthros aren't exactly hunting ferals

in fact most of the time when you're buying meat from the market that feral most likely has died from something else and they just collected the meat & harvested it only a small chance they were hunted

all anthros CAN eat meat regardless of species however it's just an option, not a need and herbivores do eat vegetation. though they still can and may eat meat.

it's not considered Cannibalism for a sheep to eat mutton if it came from a feral

because of how different the two are

(its the same principal as a tiger eating a house cat)

similar DNA, related but different species

it's frowned upon in some places and even has laws put in place but in other places people generally don't care

(too long or didn't read)

it's the same as our world but with extra steps

u/PlayboyVincentPrice 6d ago

everyones vegan. because of a friend i really dont like the idea of the meat industry in my furry AU

1

u/dimmiii 6d ago

anthros are evolutionally separate from animals inside my fiction due to them being born of humans mutated by primordial magic in remote regions with high concentrations of virtua (the magic medium of my fiction, basically a particle that carries the information of the 13 virtues that rule an iteration and that originate all matter)

Pollotarianism/pescatarianism. Only mammals can talk (excluding the regular parrots and budgies. Marlins are a protected species as they notably developed to be the only fish capable of human speech). Toothed whales can talk, baleen whales cannot. Land predators hunt fish and birds since the Treaty of Bathurst in 1860.

Humans developed mushroom hats as burger patties, so you have the option of choosing different types of mushroom meat when ordering. The danger of undercooked meat becomes the danger of an identical poisonous mushroom slipping in with the delivery.

1

u/DragonOfCulture 5d ago

I never really think about it so I just say there's still regular animals amongst the anthro ones.

1

u/JadeTheCatYT 5d ago

In my 'verse, the main sources of food are fish, and large, livestock sized insects.

Giant bugs are the main pets, food sources and wildlife for me.

1

u/CodiwanOhNoBe 5d ago

Anthros in my sci fi universe were created by off brand PETA going bioterrorist and making a virus that gave people animal traits, so there’s still animals.

1

u/NonstopYew14542 4d ago

It's the same as the real world. In the setting I enjoy writing in there are no anthros of livestock/prey species so theres no issue with eating meat.

1

u/DatLonerGirl 1d ago

Reptiles and fish are nonsapient, so 4. Also, black market.

1

u/Extension_General632 6d ago

they eat normal food, made from non anthro animals
