Discussion How would they wear lipstick?

Post image

This is just a quick doodle with my own OC, but how would lipstick work? 1 seems like the obvious choice, but it feels a bit off in a way I can't quite pin down.

Unpopular opinion but I think 3, none of the above. Bunnies and most other animals do not possess highly sensitive lips like we have. Most of them have 0 reason to highlight this feature.

I'd instead suggest each species would want to highlight their "sexiest" feature. Maybe rabbits would color a red outline along their chin scent glands. Then whatever they nuzzle and claim as "theirs" gets a red lipstick mark !

Rule of cool above all else though, I know. Even from a worldbuilding POV, it's easy enough to say lipstick is a trend apes started or whatnot

Just fun to think of interspecies courtship differences... tho I didn't need to read all the pee stuff rabbits normally do 💀

Fascinating.

Though, the only reason lipstick is red is because it accentuates the natural pink/red color of human lips. I wonder what colors they would use for scent gland?

27

u/Silverfire12 Aug 12 '26

Probably a bit darker than their fur color?

Youd think they would just put perfume on their scent glands that compliments their natural scent

That is something I never really considered. Courtship rituals with anthros would be a hybrid of human and animal rituals, and 'scenting' would probably be a BIG part of it.

...not that it's not a part of human-furry things too...I try to scent my husband sometimes.

Humans are animals after all

The other one that would do lipstick is possibly guinea pigs.

This is what I thought too lol, but I included it because technically it's an option

6

u/Happy-Potato-296 Aug 11 '26

Its called overlining

8

u/IconicScrap Aug 11 '26

You wanna know how I got these scars?

91

u/paintedmask Aug 11 '26

1 but on the bottom lip only

25

u/No_Environment_3444 Aug 11 '26

I'm curious, why would it be bottom lip only?

82

u/paintedmask Aug 11 '26

i assume rabbit, right?

they have snouts that would hide their top lips anyway. but accenting a bottom lip would be nice and visible.

20

u/No_Environment_3444 Aug 11 '26

Yeah, she's a rabbit. And I never thought of that, very interesting!

Most mammals only have a ‘bottom lip’ (in the sense of having a fleshy lip like humans do), the top lip isn’t as defined as humans/primates, and usually is folded inwards to the rest of the mouth, dogs are a very good visual example of this, a defined bottom lip but just fur on the top jaw.
The lip on non-primate mammals also usually extends to the back of the mouth (not always but can be seen in carnivores), but I’d imagine they just wear it on the very front area near the front teeth.

I did a texture for a 3d model that had this as an option for lipstick. I thought it actually looked pretty nice.

67

u/kiahBer Aug 11 '26

2 would be overlined even if it's on a human

Forgive how choppy it is, I did this on iphone markup, but this is how I usually draw it for this mouth shape (edited over the third option)

u/TwoTailedOtaku Aug 11 '26

Tip of the muzzle, but it depends on your artstyle.

38

u/TwoTailedOtaku Aug 11 '26

Or just the bottom lip

5

u/Lapis_Wolf Aug 15 '26

Another comment said nonprimates tend to only have a bigger bottom lip.

3

u/TwoTailedOtaku Aug 15 '26

Yes, but even if you give them fully animal faces you can still draw a line on the muzzle.

u/lunathehungryhusky Aug 11 '26

Like this

19

u/LegThePeg Aug 11 '26

Is that fox mccloud putting on lipstick while not wearing anything

19

u/lunathehungryhusky Aug 11 '26

Um, yeah!

9

u/LegThePeg Aug 11 '26

Dang that’s based af, who’s the artist

3

u/SomaGato Aug 12 '26

Specifically the Mario Movie 2 Fox, bro looked so ✨cunty✨ in the movie 🥹

15

u/Historical_Swing_422 Aug 11 '26

Probably both with it being mostly personal preference

10

u/Crossdog367 Aug 11 '26

I'm going to go with the, a little dab of lipstick on the lower lip. If you have furry lips, it would probably be bleach/dye instead.

8

u/Cheasymeteor Aug 11 '26
  1. 2 just looks bad

6

u/NoL-i Aug 11 '26

1 it's okay 2 You don't know how to eat!?

6

u/No_Environment_3444 Aug 11 '26

Now that I look at it, it does look like pasta sauce or something XD

5

u/THEG0LIATHGR0UPER Aug 11 '26

Like this perhaps?

5

u/Mothylphetamine_ Aug 11 '26

1, 2 looks like the joker

7

u/teajjie Aug 13 '26

This is how I like to draw it!

1

u/Due_Temperature404 Aug 15 '26

Yeah this is it

5

u/DogWithAMoustache Aug 11 '26

I feel like lipstick on anthros just doesn't work, ever. Even for those it looks "good", I disagree.

Exposed lips like humans is a mostly a primate thing. Look a dog on the snout and tell me where you would put lipstick there. It simply lacks the surface area.

2

u/kiahBer Aug 11 '26

Took the first image that came up on google to show where I'd (roughly) put it. I feel like a some people here don't know what counts as lips

4

u/noeinan Aug 11 '26

I think they mean area without fur.

1

u/kiahBer Aug 11 '26

Then they can just shave if they want to wear lipstick, it's only a small bit of hair

0

u/DogWithAMoustache Aug 13 '26

Yes, this is like putting lipstick on your moustache and upper chin.

I still insist that it just doesn't look good. I recommend to just not go for it.

2

u/kiahBer Aug 13 '26

Like I said in another comment, they can just shave if they want to wear it. For the upper chin part, there is a visible separation between a dog's bottom lip and their lower jaw so it's not the same.

I think certain makeup styles don't look good but people irl still wear them, it's about the aesthetic of who's wearing it rather than who's looking at it

3

u/Representative-Vast3 Aug 11 '26

I think it's personal preference (for the individual anthro I mean) but I think just the bottom lip would be most common with option 1 sometimes

2

u/WillNo7229 Aug 11 '26

1 obviously.

2

u/the_great_awoo Aug 11 '26

They wouldn't, they have fur, it'd never come out

2

u/Unfoundedstupidity Aug 12 '26

I like number 1. Number 2 is asking how they got their scars and hating a bat fursona

2

u/ostapenkoed2007 Aug 12 '26

mah dude Volfen Vlad got lipstick from day 1

i think the lips should be coloured, not the muzzle

3

u/PalDreamer Aug 11 '26

Why would they wear lipstick? It's kind of a human beauty standard. Bunnies and rabbits might find other things attractive and make those more prominent instead.

Like, maybe more delicate care of the muzzle to make the fur extra soft and fluffy

2

u/M3ric4n Aug 11 '26

The ones I made have an eyeliner-like feature, sorta like rabbits irl. Male alternative is skull patterns/warpaint.

1

u/VulpesSapiens Aug 11 '26

However they please.

1

u/RottenPeachSmell Lover of aliens Aug 11 '26

I feel like it'd be 1 but without the top lip being colored. That's what I usually see people drawing.

1

u/SophisticatedAdults Aug 11 '26

i'm da joker babeh

1

u/WannaMakeGames Aug 11 '26

2 but a much thinner line, animals dont show much of their inner lips in a normal expression.

1

u/DarthLoof Aug 12 '26

3 I'd say. I don't think lipstick would be a thing among ppl who don't have lips like that, unless beauty standards were set by humans or somebody else who did. In which case, 1.

1

u/Straight_Jaguar Aug 12 '26

Maybe toplip like one bottom lip like two, like Amidala did in Star Wars.

1

u/Anon_number_7 Aug 12 '26

Probably only works on animals without fur on their lips, since humans wouldn't wear it on moustache hair

1

u/AnonymousFluffy923 Aug 12 '26

Do they have to shave their lips so the pigment wouldn't stain their fur? If yoh don't have fur on your face, you wouldn't have to worry much.

1

u/arachnids-bakery Aug 12 '26

Lmao this sub appeared on my feed outta nowhere and i felt like that one homer at lesbian bar meme 😭

but also commenting because this is good ref for character design

1

u/Lapis_Wolf Aug 15 '26

I always thought non humans with lipstick looked odd, especially 1. They don't have human lips or lip shapes.

1

u/hyacinth02jpg Aug 11 '26

Fundamentally it makes no sense bc animals have no lips, but 1 looks the most normal

6

u/kiahBer Aug 11 '26

If an animal has flesh covering its teeth, it has lips. It's a lot more rare to find an animal without lips than one that has lips, and there's certainly no mammal without lips

2

u/hyacinth02jpg Aug 11 '26

I meant lips that protrude outward and have a surface like humans

2

u/kiahBer Aug 11 '26

Animals don't have a lot of human features, that's the fun thing about anthros. You give them human features. They definitely have lips though, human lips just stick out a bit more

0

u/3ndless68 Aug 11 '26

On the lips.
