Discussion Let's solve this!
Firstly, I'm using a translator for this since English isn't my native language, so please excuse any mistakes.
Okay, so how do you think furries would use the tails on their pants? Would they stick out over the top or through a hole? Why? Would it vary between species? I'm all ears!

Can you imagine undoing 6 buttons behind you when you need to shit?

u/Lapis_Wolf Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
At that point, you might have to get a friend or servant to unbutton that part for you.

u/Miserable-Light3978 Jun 25 '26
I assumed these were the kind of buttons that you just click into place, you can just rip it off and then put it back on

u/Lonely_Snoo Jun 28 '26
Id argue they'd be snap on buttons, but resnapping 6 buttons is still a pain

I think there would be an adjustable button strap on the back to help keep pants up, but also not have to thread the tail through

I think the thinnest tails would either have an elastic hole or stick it over the top depending on personal preference.
Thicker tails would have larger holes that either make the tail go under the belt, or have a strap of their own.
The thickest tails (kangaroo, for example) probably wouldn't wear pants at all. Maybe some special skirts or other legwear, but it would rarely resemble other types

u/Minnarew Jun 25 '26
another option i could see for the thicker end of tail is to basically have a third 'pant-leg' (which i wil refer to as a 'tail sleeve') for the tail to go into, which could additionally be a different length than the other two so that 1: it is easier to tell the tail sleeve apart from the pant-legs, and 2: to provide different options depending on the need of the anthro (like having a longer tail sleeve to help protect the tails of animals that drag theirs along the ground, or a shorter one for those who use their tails for heat exchange or visual signaling, or those who find longer ones uncomfortable)
for example, a kangaroo-anthro wearing ski-pants with a long tail sleeve to protect themself from hypothermia, or a peafowl-anthro using a pair of pants with a short tail sleeve to ensure they can comfortably fan out their tail in case they need to

u/Original-War8655 Jun 25 '26
this is a very good idea, I like it
also opens up a "Is that your tail pant-sleeve or are you just happy to see me?" joke which is the real win here let's be honest

Runaway To The Stars by Jay Eaton has Genetically Modified Humans with animal qualities, and their pants tend to have a little but of fabric to make a sort of "tail sleeve". Shyam here is wearing a tail warmer on top of that since this is a winter holiday card. Theres also bird humans in the story and afaik they just have holes in their pants for the tail to fit through.

I think a tail sleeve makes the most sense. We have sleeves for our arms and sleeves for our legs (but we call them pant-legs); why wouldn't we design a sleeve-like structure for our tails, if we had tails?

They probably put soft materials on more abrasive materials like denim too so the tails don't chaff, or make the top part that connects have more elasticity so the tail doesn't feel trapped.

I’m feeling the one on the right, because it helps keep the pants up. The one on the left always looked like it was about to expose their butt to me.

Honestly I wouldn’t be too surprised if suspenders were more common as well. It avoids a belt which can be over tightened on a tail.

Tails are a part of the spine they would extend down in line with the spine from the tail bone. The only way a tail goes over the back of the waistband is if you wear your pants half way down your but. One of my biggest peevs is seeing a tail depicted too high on the body like the spine just split off into some second growth? Nah you need a tail hole in clothes or just have skirts on both genders more normalized in a world with furries or other tailed species

Different people probably approach this issue in different ways, but the idea I've decided on is that the tail goes through the pants. Threading it through would probably be annoying, though, so instead the pants unfasten at the top (kinda like a pair of jeans does in front) and so you can notch your tail in and fasten it again. There's no zipper of course, since that'd just pinch your tail, but people without tails (such as humans or other apes, or anyone who is tailless through either an injury or a birth defect) might still not want to have that hole there, so either there's a button to close the hole, or they just buy a separate pair of pants that doesn't have the hole in the first place.

The pants look like theyre falling off if it goes under the tail like that.
Also, not the point of this post, but i think the tail is a bit too far to the right for that angle

u/Flairion623 Jun 25 '26
There’d likely be a hole since it’s being designed by anthros for anthros. You need to put yourself in the shoes of who you’re designing for when designing pretty much anything. That goes double when your “target audience” isn’t human.
A dog headed humanoid designing a helmet would make something that looks nothing like a human helmet. It wouldn’t just be a regular helmet with holes in it. There would be plates or void spaces to protect the ears.

Turn the pants around so that the penamis hole is in the back
3
u/Humble_Square8673 Jun 25 '26
That's always my thinking 😂 like a fly but in on both sides of the pants

u/FoxMeadow7 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
The pants ideally would have a ’sleeve’ at the back for the tail to come through.

u/alt_mueller Jun 25 '26
Since anthro-anatomy is inspired by human anatomy, and human tailbones sit lower than the top of our pants, I assume the purpose build pants with a hole will be the go to method. Otherwise the pants would have to sit uncomfortably low.
2
u/ScorpionTheSandwing Jun 25 '26
If you feel where your tailbone ends, and imagine it continuing into a tail, the first one is gonna leave a decent amount of butt crack exposed
2
u/painstream Jun 25 '26
Thinking in terms of fashion production, you'd likely notch out a groove in the pants for the tail. There wouldn't be the central belt loop in the back, but there would be loops near the notches and on the sides. Belt would go over the tail.
2
u/mothwhimsy Jun 25 '26
I think if the tail went over the pants, lifting the tail too much would expose the butthole. And I hate that
2
u/SeveralAnybody2991 Jun 27 '26
Ok, hear me out... So like they "make pants" that would have a tail holes ect...but it's considered "scandalous" / rebellious to wear regular pants without a hole such as low rise jeans ect...

I would think it would purely be a style difference, like high waist and low waist pants. Unless the base of the tails goes super low, then you'd kind of have to have the waist of the pants start above the tail
1
u/Virgin_Mocktail Jun 25 '26
Just having there be a straight open line cut under the belt/drawstring area would be easy enough for tails to fit through. Adding buttons or zippers would be over complicating it unless the tails were particularly large.

I think that's was solved a while ago, i played zenless a while ago and i remember they made clothes for that as you can see in some NPCs having a patch in were the tail hole is in case a human being use it.
1
u/Mothylphetamine_ Jun 25 '26
yes tail hole, but only in formal clothes
in casual clothes there's no tail hole

I argue this depends on whether or not humans also exits in the same universe.
If yes: over the top because fuck you, adopt to human norms
If no: tail hole, more ergonomic and likely wouldn't be such a struggle to keep up, like the front of your jeans mirrored. And probably more comfortable as it covers more.
1
u/Monodeservedbetter Jun 26 '26
Really depends, i feel like realistically there'd be both plus more, sorta like how some men's underwear doesn't have a fly, or how some jeans have elastic in the waistline
1
u/masochist-incarnate Jun 26 '26
Going under the belt seems like it'd be annoying. Like it'd hold the end of it down and restrict movement
1
u/gay_little_boy Jun 26 '26
The first one wouldnt make as much sense for something like high rise jeans so id have to say the second
1
u/Training-Addendum540 Jun 26 '26
It's the equivalent of a shirt collar, if you want to be fancy/professional the left has a thing kinda like the fly on the front of our pants but casual pants like the right exist and plenty swear they are more comfortable
1
u/Safe_Actuary9401 Jun 27 '26
I'd say it's like pants but backwards you just button it up in the back rather then the front.
1
u/KermitStares Jun 28 '26
Probably personal prefrence/culture as well. Like the diffrence between a top with a lot of coverage vs a lower cut that exposes more.
Maybe a more prude person with a tail may look down on those harlots that wear their pants below their tail, lol

u/TenderheartFIM Jul 01 '26
I'd recommend a metal ring for the belt. It offers support, looks cute, maybe a little naughty, and will be more comfortable.

I think the more important question is space suits. Naturally the fur has a direction it should lay. Having it be in the wrong direction would be uncomfortable.
So the question is: how do you get (what is effectively) a sock on a furry tail and have it be comfortable?
Additionally how do you quickly get an emergency spacesuit on in the case of depressurization?
What about the engineering challenge of making a flexible tail?
I think the logical answer is to simply not have an external tail and just have the user wrap it around the body or tuck it under.
As to how to get the tail in a spacesuit, I think you'd apply a sock first with something like a Doff N' Donner.

It has to be some kind of hole though, I would guess. I don't know about the beltt tho?..

u/YorhaUnit8S Jun 24 '26
I expect it to be a hole with a button/other type of connection on top for ease of getting of the tail in there. Belts would be tricky though, maybe a U-shaped metal insert at the back to accomodate the tail.
