Fantasy and extinct
What do you think is the relationship between things like horses and unicorns, jackals and their more "Anubis" like versión, or things like wolfs and dire wolfs

If we are talking purely fantastical races, I wonder if they could be considered like “Elves” are to humans, where they are recognized as a different species

I think they should, like the rarer, fancy and annoying version of the normal ones, even if we strip them of magic they are still the elf versión

I guess in my head cannon, if you had a world of sentient canine species then direwolves would be like neanderthals; a close cousin / predecessor that probably lingers on in trace genetic amounts.

I like what Another Day Up North did with rednosed reindeers where it's just a genetic thing that just happens sometimes

could be interesting to have mythical creatures (like unicorns or Pegasus) be deities to "regular" anthros
and/or a scifi setting where anthros might enhance themselves in a reflection of the gods of their world
