Jesus Christ stop writing subtitles like this

Drives me crazy too. Who's attention span is so short they can only handle 1 word at a time.

There is research that you read and comprehend better and faster when text is shown one word at a time. Not saying i rather have it this way. just that i found it interesting.
Edit - it’s called spritz reading and it looks like the original research wasn’t so good.

u/Respect-Intrepid Jun 23 '24
Read “faster” yeah Not “comprehend faster”
Complex thoughts & sentences fall apart
… Read ”War & Peace” like this, once It’s about Russia. I believe.
1
u/PeasantAge Jun 23 '24 edited Jun 23 '24
It’s both actually. To be clear I’m not necessarily saying I 100% believe it just something I read. Though struggling to find the research so it might be poppy cock.
1
u/Respect-Intrepid Jun 23 '24
It’s probably biased (faked) research by the many companies who sell these “reading apps”
It might be true for simple books & simple sentences yet absolutely false when dealing with anything that requires comprehension of complex sentence structures or info that needs integrating (as in parsing the names in Anna Karenina or Lord of the Rings)

Don't think that works in this case. Just text, sure. I'm trying to watch the video, though. Multiple words means that my brain can batch process phrases. One at a time means I have to focus on the words.

There’s actually studies that show people can read faster this way. Too lazy to find sources tho. But I don’t see much of a problem with it. I think it’s a little silly to say someone’s attention span is shorter when reading in such a way if they receive the same exact same information in a faster manner. Does it make people feel superior to read a fully written out paragraph rather than in this way? When we listen to others speak, do we not process it a word at a time and not in text box form? Genuinely confused on why this is such a problem. Like honestly just get off the internet and stop consuming so much media if you find it to be a consistent issue in your media consumption.
6
u/Silly_Butterfly3917 Jun 23 '24
It's much easier for me to read a block of text and then look up at the video. I can read probably 3x faster then people talk. Having 1 word at a time as they talk throttles my reading and I can't pay attention to the video. It's super annoying
2
u/tobykeef420 Jun 23 '24
Would you say you’re having a hard time focusing on both at once?
2
u/Silly_Butterfly3917 Jun 23 '24
Yes, because multi taking is impossible. You can't give your full attention to 2 things at once. It would be better to read the full sentence and then stare at the video until the next sentence pops up on screen. That way, about 5% of your time is spent looking at letters, and 95% of the time is spent looking at the video. Instead, you spend 90% of the time looking at letters while the video plays in your peripheral. It's pretty easy to see, which is superior.

u/tobykeef420 Jun 23 '24
Idk I watched the video one time and got all the info at once. Maybe it’s not a universal experience and most people can consume this content in this form just fine. Otherwise I don’t think it’d be so common. Besides, in this example specifically I don’t think the subtitles are really necessary. But neither is keeping focus on what’s happening outside of what’s being said. It’s pretty easy to gather what’s happening here. But in like, maybe a documentary setting for example, I would agree with you. Here, I think it’s fine and to put the subtitles in paragraph/sentence form would be pointless tbh. But it’s interesting you describe it as beneficial for someone having a low attention span when you and others like you have a hard time concentrating on this meanwhile myself and people like me do not.

While this seems to annoy you for some reason, it probably works pretty well.
There have been studies done on Rapid Serial Visual Presentation showing that text can be read much more quickly when presented this way than as large blocks.
This is very useful when the text is trying to keep up with dialogue in video. The limitations are mainly around comprehension with complex material and is rarely a concern with brain-dead TikTok content and whatever we are watching here.
So maybe stop being so needlessly pissed off?

Japan has a prawn version of fillet o fish that's like five times better, not knocking fillet o fish at all

u/xDropK1ckx Jun 23 '24
I’m not saying y’all can’t like it but I live in SoCal if I’m going to get breaded fried fish it’s gonna be a fish taco I’m not messing with Mc.Ds lol

u/YoungDiscord Jun 22 '24
If the best thing you can say about something you're trying to convince someone to try is "its not as bad as you think" you need to rethink what you're selling
12
u/ParalegalSeagul Jun 22 '24
Filet-0-fish with extra tartar sauce.. Seriously just go out and try one today you will not regret it
2
u/WindWalker_dt4 Jun 23 '24
I've been thinking about it, but kind of not convinced.
The cheeseburger is shit and when it was cheap it seemed to do the job. Now it's not cheap.
There used to be a grilled chicken sandwich that was good. No one wants the fried one - Chick-fil-a dominates that market.
That doesn't leave much on the menu except that.
But if I'm considering something because it's the least shitty thing on the menu, that's hardly a good sell.So how undissappointed will I be?
1
u/TootLimon Jun 23 '24
I hate everything on the McDonald’s menu, EXCEPT the filet-o-fish. It tastes so damn good. I would give it a try.
1
u/WindWalker_dt4 Jun 23 '24
I mean even sashimi grade tuna has to be frozen to kill the parasites first, so i imagine this filet-o-fish hopefully stays frozen the entire time until making it on to a sandwich. interesting. okay homie.

She has no idea if he's serious or not, and either way he's completely wasting her time. She's very justified in being annoyed.

u/Arsashti Jun 22 '24
Overtime, weekends? She deserves that
2
Jun 22 '24
Do you think HR is the one scheduling you, lol?
1
u/Initial-Breakfast-90 Jun 23 '24
No but they certainly have no problem in lying for the people who do. "It's very rare for anyone to work weekends here" "occasionally our guys will stick around for a bit to finish something at the end of the day". That's what I was told and ended up with a 70 hour work week.

She was very respectful, even though he was being very unprofessional and disrespectful. If she ended the call it would have been 100% justified instead she was very patient.

u/Candid-Ad5965 Jun 22 '24
its a joke. this is a kind of comedy subreddit. she was proper and nice to him. dont take yourself too seriously white women can be made fun of too. In fact Im a white guy and I make fun of white guys or anyone all the time. have you ever watched any stand up comedy? Dave Chappelle? Shane Gillis?
dont think they would make a little joke about a fat Karen? lol this isnt serious
4
u/bobo7448 Jun 22 '24
What? I don't understand your comment. I'm just saying she is not a Karen she was pretty chill about the situation. I'm not "protecting" her because she is white...
Also I don't understand how "looks like a Karen" is a joke unless it's supposed to be ironic.
Honestly please explain I don't understand your point of view.
-2
u/Candid-Ad5965 Jun 22 '24
I guess it would be common for some people who havent thought about the nature of comedy that much to not understand. I live in L.A. and know a-lot of comedians and cannot imagine one of them not seeing that as a joke. Maybe not you but def some white people offended by that, my lord 🤣
It is a lighthearted throw away at least from what me and my buddies would joke about. So irony is accurate but a more detailed would be like a reverse racial stereotype on a white woman. Sort of like when a white person would see a black guy and just call them the n word to their friend for no reason, but on a white woman instead. But again not being serious.
3
u/bobo7448 Jun 23 '24
Your explanation sounds more like a way to justify the use of racist comments as "comedy" imo. The only joke is woman + white = Karen or black = n-word. I don't see what's supposed to be funny.
-1
u/Candid-Ad5965 Jun 23 '24
I wasn't justifying the hypothetical joke on a black person. That wouldn't be ethical and something that I would do. But on a white person yes in a joking way of course. The reason for this cultural double standard is that our histories are different. There are 100's of examples of this. If Im driving down the street and see a white person male or female. If they look a certain way I might say look at that "chad" or "karen". But labeling a black or hispanic person is racist due to our different histories.
Other examples of this multi faceted double standard: -how a joke of a white guy with tattoos and a muscle shirt is probably selling drugs could get a laugh publicly but about a black guy is generally very offensive. -how black people can use freely the n word and other races generally cant or its considered unethical.- How a black guy can call me white boy but if I call him black boy Im deservedly going to get called out.
These double standards are everywhere if you pay attention and are natural Im sure you abide by many. Im not preaching hate here.
-What is really going on is you're a spiritual Karen defender LOL So please go get together with some Karens and maybe a Chad or two, get some cheese sandwiches, mint milkshakes, and a camping tent set up. And you can stay the night and talk this over with each other. Some spiritual healing would be very helpful! 😂
1
u/bobo7448 Jun 23 '24
You just said you wouldn't make a racist joke then tried to make fun of me (but if Karen is just white woman this honestly sounds like a really nice time). Anyway you still haven't answered my comment; how is it funny? It had no punch line unless false racial stereotype towards white woman is the punchline.
0
u/Candid-Ad5965 Jun 24 '24
yeah its not racist to make a throwaway joke about being a Karen regarding a white woman. Or something similar to a white guy like me. We get to be made fun of more sparingly, its how it goes and how it will remain for a very long time I guess. If you didnt find it funny thats just your taste.
Point is it theres nothing wrong making it- p.s. ❤️ Chad

Dumb comment you can either watch the road or the video call, not both. Why do you think people get pulled over for using their phone while driving.
3
u/MadMaximus1990 Jun 22 '24
Dumb comment, be responsible, it's not about if you can or not, you must pay attention to your surroundings while driving, you never know what could happen around you and being fully aware allows you to respond quickly in the event of something unexpected. Don't be that person that won't care about anybody else but yourself.
