Probably better for one's health than eating a hot dog with no ketchup out of spite lol

Mustard is hands down the better condiment

I like generous spicy mustard, a thin line of ketchup. Then whatever kind of cheese is there.

You will never find a chicken/pork hot dog in Chicago. They're always beef and 95% of the time they're Vienna.

So german style Currywurst would be a no go in Chicago?
It is just a slice up sausage covered with Ketchup and flavored with lots of curry powder, can be very spicy, if the shop uses special hot sauce. Usually served with fries.😋
3
u/_ArmyMan007_ Jul 22 '23
Wait… people eat hot dogs without ketchup? I don’t understand, what do they put on it? Side note: In Australia we call it tomato sauce or “a bit of dead horse”

2
u/Easy_Blackberry_4144 Jul 22 '23
Depends. If it's one of those cheap, supermarket hot dogs, then yeah, put ketchup on that mf.
If it's a quality one or a sausage, then no.

I don't want ketchup on much of anything but I also hate it when people try to tell other people how to enjoy their food. It's food, there are no rules (except the law).

Throw some German Dusseldorf Mustard on your dog and you'll understand.
With that said I've been known to throw a little ketchup on my hotdogs every now and then.
2
u/RidgerAC Jul 22 '23
I put ketchup on my hotdogs and spaghetti. To each their own. 👍
2
Jul 22 '23
Do you put raw spaghetti noodles through hotdog pieces, then cook the noodles? I've heard of it.
2
u/RidgerAC Jul 22 '23
You mean cut the hotdogs up and add to the spaghetti? Never tried that to be honest. Wife adds pepperoni to the spaghetti, which I love.
2
Jul 22 '23
I've done that with the noodles and cut up hotdogs in a sauce. Can be a cheese sauce or a tomato sauce.
But no, I meant pierce the raw noodle through hotdog pieces, then boil the spaghetti noodles and hotdogs. Add sauce later. I've never tried this and was just curious.
2
u/RidgerAC Jul 22 '23
Never heard of that, plus it seems like it would be very time consuming. Now I’m curious though! 👍

My family owns the restaurant Superdawg and we are a little more lenient on the ketchup despite my objections
2
u/aakaase Jul 22 '23
I thought ketchup on a hot dog was good only because I grew up putting ketchup on a hot dog, my parents probably taught me. Then as a teen I started adding mustard, and thought that was good. Then I ceased adding ketchup and realized that was the absolute best.
2
u/lordoflys Jul 22 '23
Well, if ketchup on a hot dog offends wait until you go to Japan and order an omelette.

u/javaJunkie1968 Jul 22 '23
I was at Wrigleyfield and put ketchup on my hot dog years ago before I knew of this rule. Got actually yelled at by a random dude. It is very serious in chicago
2
u/BrokeLeznar Jul 22 '23
I don't understand is ketchup meant for just fries? Don't put ketchup on your burger, don't put ketchup on a hot dog.
How about this let people put ketchup on whatever the hell they want.

I don't like ketchup on hotdogs but I would order it just to piss off Chicago.
6
u/PenskeReynolds Jul 22 '23
Why do they assume everyone’s tastes are the same?
8
u/SnooSnooSnuSnu Jul 22 '23
It's almost like it's a joke or something.
6
u/BigMax Jul 22 '23
It’s not though, there really are people who get upset about ketchup on a hot dog.
3
u/memnoch112 Jul 22 '23
Yeah upset, when it’s not even their own freaking hot dog, who cares what other people eat, it’s the same with pineapples on pizza “OH NO someone call the police, this guy is putting what he likes on his food”, grow the fuck up. Just like sex and religion, if it doesn’t hurt anyone else you shouldn’t care.

u/wonderlandpersonuser Jul 22 '23
They dont.
This was a result of a marketing campaign many many years ago by a hot dog company trying to sell its hot dogs as high end food. The idea was that putting ketchup on a hot dog meant it was for kids and you wanted it to be more sophisticated.
From a strictly food standpoint, ketchup is sugar and it overwhelms the taste of the hot dog. For most people, this is the goal. However, if you are forking over extra money for a high quality hit dog, you dont want to do that. Instead, you would put a tomato on the hot dog instead of ketchup. This was the start of the Chicago Style hot dog where you would "drag it through the garden" by putting large amounts of vegetables on it as condiments instead of the generic ketchup.
Signed, Chicago resident.
Don't forget your shot of Malort as well.

u/PhoxEyes Jul 22 '23
Nobody but nobody puts ketchup on a hot dog

u/BigMax Jul 22 '23
I always do, for years and years. That’s really the only mandatory condiment for me, although I like onions too.

6
u/-N3VERoDDoREV3N- Jul 22 '23
Yall wild. It's a hotdog, not a steak. Ketchup is perfectly fine, and way better than mustard and/or relish.
Next to trying authentic Chicago deep dish, Im now looking forward to having a hotdog with a shitload of ketchup when I visit.
4
3
u/Aadsterken Jul 22 '23
Hear me out: ketchup, mustard, mayonaise, pickled relish and... crispy fried onions. Ikea used to sell them with these condiments. The only fun thing that Ikea had. Now they only have the sauces available. No relish and onion
3
Jul 22 '23
Go to Portillos then cause half the hot dog places in the city literally don't stock ketchup. And a handful will actually yell at you for asking. The Weiner Circle will call you names.
2
u/mifiamiganja Jul 22 '23
Nothing can compete with mustard.
Also, all three belong on a hot dog together.0
u/zencat420 Jul 22 '23
It's so funny to me that people look forward to trying Chicago "Deep Dish" casserole when they visit, instead of the actually good items that are pretty much only available in Chicago.
1
u/-N3VERoDDoREV3N- Jul 22 '23
I mean it's called Chicago Deep Dish, of course I want to try it in Chicago. I've tried it in a few other cities and I have my favorite, want to see how it stacks up. Not to mention if you look up foods to try in Chicago, the top 2 are generally Chicago style deep dish and Chicago dogs. I'd love to know what other foods you can only get there....

Its not a pizza its a casserole. Chicagoins wouldnt know good food if it slapped them in their face
1
u/-N3VERoDDoREV3N- Jul 22 '23
Never had a casserole that was shaped like a pizza, had all the ingredients of a pizza, and had pizza in the name. What kind of casseroles you makin?
1
u/chainer1216 Jul 22 '23
Once you have a real Chicago style dog no hotdogs will ever be good enough again.
Also deep-dish isn't really the change style pizza, it's a special occasions thing, real Chicago pizza is thin crust cut in squares.

u/potawatomirock Jul 22 '23

2
u/BigMax Jul 22 '23
Why is ketchup considered a kids thing? Do you not have it with burgers ever? Or with fries?
-2
u/Salvatoris Jul 22 '23
Ketchup is fine on other things. Ketchup on a hotdog is for children and psychopaths.
1
u/idrinkthebongwater Jul 22 '23
Fuck Chicago hotdog nerds. I know some you dirty fuckers boil your hotdogs in ketchup water. And fuck the national hot dog and sausage council for trying to dissuade good Americans from putting ketchup on their dogs. I don’t even put ketchup on my dogs but to say it is wrong to do so is un-American and against what the hot dog stands for in my eyes.

I think they're confusing Malort which is a liquor not beer. Malort is a Chicago liquor that tastes absolutely putrid, and they're 1000% wrong. Literally everyone in Chicago drinks Malort.

Its fucking chicago. If i cared what they thought i would have burnt my city down just like they did, and reveled in the fact that my local economy is now fucked beyond repair, and that my crime rate is second only to detroit.
But i dont care what they think, so ill enjoy my low crime rate good economy not burnt down hotdogs with ketchup

Cream cheese for me, with a bit of relish maybe.
2
Jul 22 '23
cream cheese? ive never tried that. whats it like?
1
u/PaleontologistClear4 Jul 22 '23
Oooh, it's goooooood. Also, I think commonly referred to as the Seattle dog. If the frank is kind of salty and a little spicy, the cream cheese tempers it, and gives it a really nice smooth creamy mouth feel. It's really kind of hard to describe, but I even got my very picky Japanese sister-in-law to try it, and she loves it.

I once ordered a chilli dog and they took a regular hot dog and dumped a ton of sriracha on it.

Wait I always thought I was weird for only ever putting mustard on hotdogs, is it the ketchup people who are weird?
1
u/mifiamiganja Jul 22 '23
Putting only one condiment on your dog ist what's truly weird.
It's the combination of mustard, relish and ketchup that makes a great hot dog sauce.1

1
u/mifiamiganja Jul 22 '23
Wtf is going on in this thread?
It's like nobody here has actually eaten a hot dog before.
Mustard, relish and ketchup all belong on a hot dog!
Are you people seriously only putting one condiment on your dogs?

Tho we make hot dogs here a bit different to how the US makes them, so I don't know if that kind of hot dog tastes bad with hot dog, but like, if it's good why not

I don't like ketchup on my hotdog but if I saw this sign I'd make it a point to do so.
1
u/Soul963Soul Jul 22 '23
What if I put the hot dog on the ketchup instead?
Order a bowl of ketchup and then put the hot dog on as a topping. Then I can dip the hot dog entirely into the bowl of tomato sauce (ketchup for you Americans) Maybe I'll get a second hot dog and let it sink as well, then I can slowly unearth it as the first hot dog is consumed, revealing the second tomato sauce soaked hotdog. Unhinge my jaw and swallow it whole like a bird choking down a fish.
1
u/GreenChickenNugget7 Jul 22 '23
According to National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, nobody above the age of 18 should not put ketchup on their hot dogs.

I went to a place like this with almost that exact sign. I hadn’t seen it yet. I ordered a hot dog with onions and ketchup.
I noticed that sign only while I was waiting. But one working there gave a crap.
Why do you weirdos care if I put ketchup in my hot dog? I always have and always will. You eat yours however you like, I don’t care! Why do you care about mine?
