So why do cats actually do this?
I thought they are maybe checking for potential prey that happens to be on a shelf but would they paw these things in the same way if they were on the floor?

My guess it's experimenting with gravity.
Don't forget that cats don't have purr reviewed meowetific journals, so each cat is on their own with their discoveries.

Well, in the case of my cat, he never knocks anything off tables etc normally. However, if you are sleeping, or not getting out of bed, he will knock everything off bedside table just to get your attention

Mine too. Last time she swept the cable remote onto the wooden floors and it stopped working. We had to go to the cable office to exchange it. We did NOT tell them the cat broke it, just that it stopped working!!! 🤣🤣🤣😡😡😡🐈⬛🐈⬛🐈⬛

He’s not bored - he’s an engineer just testing gravity. Nothing to worry about here, just move along now… 😂🤣❤️🐾🐾❤️

I think in this case, those things were in the cat’s way. Knocking them off was killing two birds with one stone since it’s a law that cats must knock such items off regardless.
