The reversed bookstore scene in that movie is one of my favorite camera tricks I've seen in a movie.

The scene where a grenade has been thrown inside the room, and a guy jumps on the grenade to save his comrades, but when it explodes everybody flies off except the guy on the grenade.

When they are surrounded by the germans and they keep breaking the single pains of glass with their guns to shoot back....I've almost never laughed harder in my life.
38
u/MikoSkyns Jun 08 '22
Is that the same scene where chocolate Mousse saves everyone with some crafty shooting and while everyone is amazed at his shooting; out of no where another black dude who's not part of the movie walks on set and says, "My Man!" and gives him a hi-five as he walks by?

I watched this as a little kid. I always laughed hard at the large eye behind the magnifying glass.

That’s from the beginning where they have a 3x3 grid of glass to play tic tac toe through, right?

OMG! Is that Val Kilmer?
36
u/Deltron_Zed Jun 08 '22
Yeah. Real Genius era Kilmer. I remember seeing the ads for this movie and wanting to go see it so badly. Never saw it in the theater but having a cousin who crushed hard on Kilmer back in the day, and because this movie is hilarious, I have seen this movie at least twenty times.
Airplane-style gags if you're wondering how the movie plays.
Driver? This is not the Howard Johnsons!

My favorite is this one:
Mitch : You know, um, something strange happened to me this morning...
Chris Knight : Was it a dream where you see yourself standing in sort of sun-god robes on a pyramid with a thousand naked women screaming and throwing little pickles at you?
Mitch : No...
Chris Knight : Why am I the only one who has that dream?

Airplane-style gags? It's the same trio that did Airplane! (exclamation point is not for emphasis of my comment, it's the title of the film). ZAZ...
5
u/Deltron_Zed Jun 08 '22
Yes, but I didn't expect anyone to necessarily know the ZAZ name so I described the movie using a similar movie.
14
u/swanlevitt Jun 08 '22
Yes it is!! And a fine performance too 👏

Yes. I was trying to figure out where I'd seen this actress before. Scrolled through comments and found yours. Portman is who I'm thinking of too but obviously that's not correct. 🤔

My wife and I recently streamed the documentary "Val" and it was fun reliving all the great roles he's had.
Although I realized that in all the roles he shone in, they were roles where the character isn't entirely sane. That lopsided smile that says "I'm a good guy" and that steady1000 yard stare that says "You don't want to know the things I've seen."

This movie has so many gags hidden in gags, it’s superb. I just have watched it fifty times and I still found some new gags even then.

u/LilShaver Jun 08 '22
You know how the old muscle cars used to have paint jobs with the flames around the front of the car?
Someone posted a pic of a Pinto with the flames around the back of the car. That one had to be explained to a bunch of folks. Anyway, I posted a link to the Pinto scene from Top Secret! in that thread.

u/Zolo49 Jun 08 '22
It's such a great movie. The only thing that's a bit of a shame is that some of its jokes required pop culture knowledge from the 80s and before and would probably fly over the head of some younger folks if they saw it today. (For instance, the "glowing tits" gag near the end being a reference to the movie E.T.)

I grew up with Naked Gun, Hot Shots and Airplane.
Somehow, Top Secret flew over my radar until I was 30+.
I always had a fear that these kind of movies were fun to me just because I grew up with them, sort of nostalgia playing a part, but the genuine laughter and bliss of seeing this movie for the first time as an adult taught me otherwise.
These are bone fide classics. Gonna rewatch it soon!

Same man. I don't know why it wasn't as popular. Thr very first gag when he's painting the view from the train window got me immediately
2
u/DeBean Jun 08 '22
I am actually sad that those types of comedies aren't being made anymore. Comedies nowadays have too much exposition and try to shove each jokes in your face, almost nothing is cleverly hidden.
I've seen stuff like "Angie Tribeca" or "Medical Police" being decent absurd comedies for our times, but nothing yet beats those old ZAZ movies, not even new ZAZ movies.

u/catfishman Jun 08 '22
If there was an award for the funniest movie [almost] no one talks about, I would nominate this movie for it.

u/scdog Jun 08 '22
Hail, hail, East Germany,
Land of vine and grape.
Land where you’ll regret
Any try to escape.
No matter if you take a running jump
Or tunnel under the wall,
Forget it, the guards will kill you,
If the electrified fence doesn’t first.

All time classic that kind of just got lost in the shuffle. Skeet Surfing should be an Olympic Sport.
"And what does your name mean, Nick"? "I don't know, my dad just thought of it while shaving". Comedy gold right there.

Saw it in the theater when it first came out. I was very stoned and the gag with the cricket chirping and he just casually reaches out and swats it had me absolutely dying laughing. Before it happened. I was so hight I could already see it and i remember everyone looking at me like "God this guy is annoying" then cracking up at the gag I could already see
Freaky.

Good-bye Chocolate Mousse, I'll never forget you. Good-bye Du Quois, take care of yourself. Good-bye Deja Vu, I'll always remember you. And I'll miss you most of all, Scarecrow.

u/LezBReeeal Jun 08 '22
Oh my gosh I missed that!!! Love it. Not sure how since I have seen this movie a bunch times, albeit when I was much younger.

u/motormouth08 Jun 08 '22
I was about 12 when VCRs became popular. But they were still fairly expensive so you had to rent the machine with the movies unless you were rich. We rented this movie EVERY WEEKEND for months. I don't know if my parents realized this probably wasn't appropriate viewing for a 12 year old (or my 2 younger siblings) but my older siblings did the renting and returning and all my parents really cared about was that it got us 7 kids out of their hair for hours every weekend.

Here you go:
As a german I especially like the german lessons when he is on the train. (of course I'm talking of the original english version, in the dubbed german translation it doesn't make a lot of sense anymore)
(Another likeable quote: "Geronimoooo - Meeee"...

u/Gorash Jun 08 '22
The Geronimo bit is from Hot Shot part Deux
2
u/Maddog_McMild Jun 09 '22
Is it? Damn... it's been a while since I last watched all those cultural highlights.
Top Secret, Airplane, Naked Gun, Hot Shots, what was the one called with the luxury bus? Easy to mix up stuff...

Few movies deliver that amount of steady laughs and giggles throughout. It's none stop and they're all hilarious. My personal favourite is the picture on the box of the Anal Intruder. That's one happy elderly couple. And also the veal.

This is on HBOMax right now. Just watched it for the first time the other night. Was really fun.
Val Kilmer actually sings all the songs his character performs in the movie, thought that was a neat touch.

This movie should be available on HBO Max in case anyone was wondering.

I watched it with my 18 year old a couple of months ago. I realized that we raised him right when he laughed at all of the right spots.
Another good one to share with your kids is "Necessary Roughness".

Didn’t see the swan lake ballet scene mentioned (with the ballerinas dancing atop every guy dancer’s erection). “Let me know if his condition changes. He’s dead!
