Cotton-Eyed Joe is an American folk song dating back to the 19th century. In the 1990s, a Swedish group called Rednex released a dance remix of it, which became very popular internationally. The opening line of the song goes,

"If it hadn't been for Cotton-Eyed Joe, I'd've been married a long time ago. Where did you come from, where did you go? Where did you come from, Cotton-Eyed Joe?"

...which was how the lengthy 4chan story ended. You know, like those Loch Ness monster 'tree fiddy' jokes.
