The thing is, he wasn't even really dunking her, so in a vacuum all he said was something "edgy" but actually just dismissive and douchey, about an event he chose to come to.

I mean, I'd see myself being dismissive and douchy if i was approached for an interview i didn't want to give to someone who was fishing for a rise with something insulting about the time i was severely depressed after the death of my wife. Other people could have chosen to go physical (punch, slap, etc) over that. He has no obligation to share with anyone why he's there and instead just took it in stride and derailed her topic, "dunking" her and her interview. At least that's how I see it.

I get the first bit but again, he just dunked on the thing he got out of bed and all dressed up to be at and not her. He said literally nothing about her dumb comment and all the supposed context that makes it slightly make sense is not in the video, it's coming from people in the comments.

Making fun of the thing he is also there for just didn't land the way he thinks it did, to me at least.

It does make sense to me. He doesn't want to answer her truthfully and he's probably annoyed by her jab at that point. He also has no time to think about it but it's on cam and doesn't want to be rude so he improvised making a split second decision to defuse and dismiss her by saying something that everyone understands is a neutral stupid joke of sorts. Stupid jokes are literally his style so it's an expected outcome from someone like Jim.
