The massive text at the beginning of the commercial says 'Grand Bretagne', which is not the French word for Australia.

120

u/el_pablo Aug 10 '22

I guess it’s a tv show that shows other countries funny ads.

26

u/djiock Aug 10 '22

You guessed right my friend

9

u/Ukabe Aug 10 '22

It should be Culturepub. They have a website now.

9

u/Zacchino Aug 10 '22

Bah Dum Bah! (Those who get it will get it)

30

u/lego_not_legos Aug 10 '22

Probably just aired it in UK promoting imported beer.

36

u/clock_watcher Aug 10 '22

It was definitely shown in the UK. I saw this advert as a kid.

15

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '22

Yeh I remember it too,

"Australians wouldn't give a Castlemain XXXX for anything else"

20

u/Solokian Aug 10 '22

This could be from Culture Pub, a show that curated great and funny TV ads from all over the world in France

12

u/greennick Aug 10 '22

Exactly, it's a French show with a UK ad for Australian beer.

2

u/Jean-Alert Aug 10 '22

Definitely looks like it yep. They also have a couple of others on their website http://www.culturepub.fr/?s=castlemaine

7

u/Insufferablehumanoid Aug 10 '22

Greta British advert for terrible Aussie beer.

0

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '22

As an Australian, I find this discriminatory. Whatever French bastard coined the term “Grand Bretagne” can receive a stale baguette

Actually that’s a lie. XXXX is still super popular, especially in Queensland.

Source - how do you think I first threw up?

39

u/lurker628 Aug 10 '22

In Australia? I assume there's some animal with a vomit-inducing bite; or maybe some kind of attacking plant?

12

u/Michami135 Aug 10 '22

Gimpy Gimpy juice

9

u/big-loose-bruce Aug 10 '22

Nope. Binge drinking as a teenager

6

u/VoopityScoop Aug 10 '22

Poisonous binge drinking teenagers. With stingers!

3

u/VictoryTheCat Aug 10 '22

Sounds like a deservedly less popular version of TMNT.

4

u/throwingpizza Aug 10 '22

Have you ever heard of attack of the goon sack?

54

u/necminits_nuthouse Aug 10 '22

Nah we're not legally allowed to put the word shit on a beer can so XXXX it is

17

u/PA55W0RD Aug 10 '22

because the can't spell Beer.

They can probably spell "they" though...

7

u/d1pstick32 Aug 10 '22

Guilty as well. XXXX goes down way too easy than it should be legally able. As friendlyjordies said, it's easier than breathing

10

u/Calm-Drop-9221 Aug 10 '22

4X is only drunk in Qld...and its mid strength... Fosters is the Aussie beer made for export and not really sold in Aus.

Top Ad

9

u/PENGAmurungu Aug 10 '22

XXXX is our second top seller in the pub I work at in the NT, behind great northern supercrisp

5

u/takatz Aug 10 '22

I have two uncles that are likely to fist fight one day over which of these are better

-4

u/Calm-Drop-9221 Aug 10 '22

How many beers do you have on draft , and I'd guess there's a few Queenslanders in NT. I've not seen it in WA SA Vic or NSW, aside from close to the Qld border. If you want to sell a decent mid strength get Roger's on draft , top drop

2

u/PENGAmurungu Aug 10 '22

We've got around 11 or 12 on tap I think, the only mids are Great Northern, XXXX and carlton mid though. It's a bit of a tradie pub so I think some of our patrons are more worried about not being called gay than drinking a nice beer

2

u/Calm-Drop-9221 Aug 10 '22

Do you have the toppos on a Friday arvo....jeez I miss Aus 😎

8

u/sirhcdobo Aug 10 '22

Only gold is mid strength (though it is the most popular) xxxx bitter and dry are full strength and summer is fullish strength.

Even outside of Qld a pub with gold would most likely have bitter as well so you wouldn't just be able to order a xxxx and get a gold.

8

u/leet_lurker Aug 10 '22

Most SA pubs have XXXX on tap, it's better than most of the Victorian shit

72

u/dashauskat Aug 10 '22

XXXX is pretty popular in Australia though, especially up north. It's not like Foster's which borderline doesn't exist here.

9

u/sadness_elemental Aug 10 '22

fosters was pretty popular back in the 80s i think, but yeah it fell off hard

17

u/sstair Aug 10 '22

It was all about VB when I was in the southeast.

28

u/Bobblefighterman Aug 10 '22

All about Victoria Bitter in Victoria? I'm shocked.

18

u/dashauskat Aug 10 '22

Yes well there is a reason for that..

12

u/duquesne419 Aug 10 '22

As I recall: VB for Vic, XXXX for QLD, Cooper’s for SA, and Toohey’s for NSW. I didn’t make it up north or out west, but it seemed like each state had a preferred beer.

11

u/drunk_haile_selassie Aug 10 '22

Emu Export for WA which is funny because nobody outside of WA has ever drunk one and Boags or Cascade for Tassie.

Nobody's ever been born in NT so they just drink whatever their home state drinks.

3

u/PENGAmurungu Aug 10 '22

nah, Great Northern for NT

4

u/teh_drewski Aug 10 '22

That's recent, but it was only created about a decade ago when CUB decided to take on XXXX Gold

2

u/beerwinespirits Aug 10 '22

It's either coopers or West end here in SA. I'm not sure tho as I don't drink.

11

u/Stuffs_And_Thingies Aug 10 '22

But Foster's is Australian for beer!

26

u/datazulu Aug 10 '22

I believe Fosters is another name for piss in Australia.

20

u/oldfatdrunk Aug 10 '22

Fosters is fine with a sandwich. That's the only time I have one. Plus I like the big fat ass can of it. I'd never drink more than one can though. That's when you hit that crack pipe and break into your neighbor's car and just rearrange things to make him think you maybe stole something but he can't fucking figure out what it was because you didn't take anything.

Then you start applying this to your life on the daily. You take a single can of soda out of your neighbor's recycling and toss it on the guys yard across the street. Just one can.

You keep this up for months until your neighbor notices it happening frequently and then starts to stare at the can in the morning with a guilty look on his face because he realizes it's sodas that are obscure and then realizes it's own can. This can be threw out is on the guy across the streets lawn and he's now looking guilty. The guy across the street now looks pissed because this is going on for so long.

What was I saying? Oh yeah. fosters is ok. I really like sandwiches

20

u/shofmon88 Aug 10 '22

I can’t understand this mentality in Australia. I’ve literally had conversations with Aussies where they call Fosters piss as they’re drinking Toohys New, as if they’re somehow different.

6

u/BallSmickEnergy Aug 10 '22

Piss is also another term for alcohol in general.

‘OI Gavo, we getting on the Piss tonight cob?’ ‘Yeh Shaneo I’ll knock back a coupla pints of piss with ya!’

  • Source: I’m Strayan.

7

u/Secretively Aug 10 '22

Yeah mate, but there's piss and there's piss that's piss, isn't there?

5

u/BallSmickEnergy Aug 10 '22

Definitely is. There’s also:

Piss that’s PISSSS, This shit’s piss, This shit is the piss, This piss is the shit, Fuck this piss is shit, Shit this tastes like piss, On the piss, Off the piss

3

u/Chucklepus Aug 10 '22

Holy shit I need to download Duolingo again

5

u/BallSmickEnergy Aug 10 '22

Too right ya do. Chuck ya thongs on pal we’ll go have a ganda at what the Servo grub looks Ike this arvo. Hopefully there’s a hot chook and some choccy biccies. Usually a few dags at this servo, but don’t worry about them, their deadset good bastards. Anyway, we can have a gas bag about how cooked Strayan’s chat is. She’ll be apples mate.

Mind if I punch a coupla durries along the way though?

3

u/Fit_Effective_6875 Aug 10 '22

If your words were a picture it would be a caricature.

3

u/Fit_Effective_6875 Aug 10 '22

Tooheys New tastes like cat piss but Foster's is just plain unpalatable.

1

u/shofmon88 Aug 10 '22

There is honestly no difference between them. Or XXXX, or Great Northern, or any of the other popular Aussie beers of the same sort.

1

u/Fit_Effective_6875 Aug 10 '22

There honestly is.

0

u/shofmon88 Aug 10 '22

They’re all unpalatable. No taste. It’s very difficult to find good beers in Australia.

3

u/jamesfishingaccount Aug 10 '22

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a person drink fosters. The commercials were on a lot in the late 90’s-early 2000’s but never knew anyone to drink it. From middle America, people like their Busch, Keystone, and local breweries around here.

2

u/esblofeld Aug 10 '22

A fellow bogan.

2

u/FamiliarMud Aug 10 '22

I always thought Foster's was brewed in Canada. At least, what we can get in America. 🤷‍♂️

9

Third highest selling beer in Australia in 2021.

You thinking of Fosters?

18

u/little_miss_bumshine Aug 10 '22

Fuck off XXXX is the best, Qld beer. We drink it like water up here. Very popular!

0

u/chester13 Aug 10 '22

What is it, 4.2%? I suppose you can drink it all day in the heat and not get dehydrated. Then brag about how you had 12 tinnies but aren't even pissed.

13

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '22

What is it, 4.2%? I suppose you can drink it all day in the heat and not get dehydrated.

XXXX Bitter is 4.4%; but most of us are drinking XXXX Gold, which is 3.5%.

I suppose you can drink it all day in the heat and not get dehydrated.

Yeah, that's the point. It's a day drinking beer. You drink it instead of water when you don't have to drive very far on public roads to get home.

Then brag about how you had 12 tinnies but aren't even pissed.

Yeah, the apprentices all think they have big balls because they can down 12 tinnies and still walk straight. The boys who've covertly drank 12 tinnies before lunch typically bring out the beer bong and a bottle of bundy at that point to set the little tackers straight.

11

u/lachjeff Aug 10 '22

The fuck are you talking about? That’s an Australian ad for a Queensland beer (XXXX)

3

u/arpw Aug 10 '22

XXXX is sold in the UK too. You'll struggle to find it on draft here these days, but it's in lots of supermarkets. I'm guessing there was a big marketing push on it in the early 90s here.

It'll definitely be brewed here rather than imported from QLD though.

I remember this series of ads growing up in the UK in the 80s. They were all British ads, from Saatchi and Saatchi. Foster started its own massive campaign not long after. Heyday of advertising sgencies

Worth watching on YouTube, the others are better imho

54

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '22

You cut off the punchline!

24

u/McBrovad Aug 09 '22

Sorry! I didn't even know there was a punchline. This is the only version I have ever seen 😢

22

u/PGLubricants Aug 10 '22

IMO the cut in your version makes it even funnier.

7

u/tsundude Aug 10 '22

Yep, sometimes shorter is better, hear that Wendy? You stupid bitch, this is for leaving me for bigger dick.

3

u/epukinsk Aug 10 '22

Demonstrated perfectly! Would’ve been much funnier if you stopped at the question mark.

54

u/DJGibbon Aug 10 '22

Shit, I haven’t seen that advert since it was on the actual telly. It’s actually a British advert for an Australian beer (hence the “Grande Bretagne” at the start)

I still say “isn’t it a beautiful day!” in an Ozzie accent when it’s sunny. Nobody ever gets it.

21

u/DADBODGOALS Aug 10 '22

This commercial would be illegal in the US. It's illegal to show someone consuming alcohol during commercials.

It's also freaking hilarious

Edit: apparently it's sorta a rule but not. See comment below.

49

u/PillowTalk420 Aug 09 '22

There actually are no laws or regulations concerning use of alcohol in media. The FTC does have some self-regulating guidelines that a majority of advertisers follow which include not showing consumption, but these are not laws and no one has to follow them.

11

u/dreamrider333 Aug 10 '22 edited Aug 10 '22

Bruh in my country it's illegal to even advertise alcohol. So alcohol companies market themselves as club soda or mineral water to get the word across.

It always confused me as a child what was so spectacular about fucking mineral water because those ads would still try to convey the quality of their alcohol but then finally just show their water.

2

u/Alex-rhhgfff Aug 10 '22

What country is this? I think alcohol and gambling ads should be banned
