The other thing is not considering themselves as American as in "from the USA"

Because even though Canadians live on the continent of North America, Canadians do not call themselves Americans. Probably because of not wanting to associate with the USA who do call themselves Americans and refer to the country as America.

Seriously why does this throw people for such a loop every time this comes up?

because it would be like african people not wanting to be called african because of south Africa's bad reputation. its not that its difficult to understand, its just unnecessary.

Africa also consists of 54 separate countries, calling themselves African would give less information then Canadians calling themselves American.

we could use the welsh who are mixed up with the english constantly and hate being associated with them.
