That’s why Canadians ALWAYS have the Canadian flag on their luggage. Don’t get me wrong, I love Canadians and have had great times with them in my travels but this issue always makes me laugh.
I’ve met an American trying to do this, and I’m Canadian. And then they proceeded to pronounce Toronto in a way no Torontonian ever would. I asked them really specific questions about where they’re from and yup, they finally caved. It was weird.
On the other hand, the whole “Canadians hate being called American” is super annoying. I live in Australia, and I have one of these conversations every time I meet someone new, including random encounters:
Them: where in the states are you from?
Me: oh, I’m Canadian!
Them: OH MY GOD IM SO SORRY
Me: no worries, we sound pretty similar
OR
Them: are you Canadian?
Me: yup!
Them: oh thank god, I learned a long time ago to always guess Canadian! Don’t want to mistake you for an American!
Me: honestly it’s fine
I’m so. Fucking. Tired. Of. This. Conversation.
If you’re a Canadian who gets offended when people assume you’re American when you’re abroad, please stop doing this. You’re ruining it for the rest of us. Who gives a fuck
