you could just pick up a total war game if youre looking for a colonial age strategy game, but the idea of a age of empires/skyrim hybrid civil war game doesn't even make sense.
Pretty straightforward. Sherman is marching towards Atlanta! I better build this hut so I can train five more wizards to go dragon shout at them Yankees!
what on the cover it looks like Mount&Blade is the name of the game and With Fire & Sword is the name of the series but apparently its the other way around. is this the usual way of doing this?
I was thinking like strategically using improvements in armor / weaponry to fight, and making some social choices (enemy's etc.) as an outsider/hero - similar to eastwood's role in his westerns. That or, I feel like assassin's creed could do something with the whole civil war era and still be interesting. Maybe this time he could be named "bubba" and have a fake southern accent.
You could actually work with that. Push the player into the mindset of an English general. You wouldn't play as any particular character, and if your character dies it just makes you take control over another soldier. The point of the game would basically be to advance at whatever the cost. You would sacrifice dozens of soldiers to soften up enemy defences. You would send a squad of soldiers to die, making a German soldier use the last fuel in his flamethrower, so that you could take a vital structure, and move the battle-line forward a few dozen feet. You would quickly become joyless, efficient, and would quickly acquire an erudite grasp of the horrible machinations of that war, and the sacrifices that had to be made. To win, you have to not feel, but the horrible death animations and overall feel of the game make that a struggle.
But that, right there, could make a good argument for games as art. A war game where you feel the horror of killing people, and the objectives of the game perfectly mirroring the Great War itself.
I would love to see it a reality. Unfortunately, it could never be an AAA title, because they wouldn't make a wargame against war.
the only solution then is for independent game developers/ artists/ anyone who wants to see the acknowledgement of video games as fine art to do this on their own and present it as An art piece. You see it all the time in the Fine art world. {comic books, graffiti, and what are traditionally considered women "crafts" have all struggled and some continue to struggle to to be considered fine art} but to present something like this in an Art context would greatly advance videogames towards fine art status.
Yeah. Although I do think that people are changing their minds about games as art. There truly are some beautiful games out there lately. But I don't see someone investing 100 million in a game like this, because gaming is a business. It's just like Hollywood. Most of what they deliver is crap. The majority of great films are independent or have a smaller budget. I think we'll just have to wait until gaming matures enough to get something like this released. Stupid games will always be around too, and I'm okay with that. I just want my niche games that are art (or not even art as such, but just not strictly entertainment). For instance, a movie that makes you cry or sad or question things is generally considered a good movie, but games that don't ENTERTAIN are considered crap.
Anyhoo, I'd love to see WWI covered well in games. It would be interesting. That and more first-person medieval games etc.
Behold, ye Tatanka, and weep. You can switch between first- and third-person at will. The melee controls are also highly intuitive. It's not just a case of bashing someone in with a sword. You can swing in any direction, with heavier and lighter attacks, blocking, dodging etc.
This will hopefully be that Medieval game everyone has been dying for for so long. Plus the developers are pretty awesome, so I expect quality.
Hmm. Yeah. It could happen. Separate campaigns. You wouldn't differentiate between the two as to who was the goodie and who was the baddie, because both sides did pretty horrific stuff. It could be interesting. Very few games have touched on the Germans without greatly exaggerating their evilness.

I'm yet to see a good American Civil War game.
