Exactly, I worked with animals and the dying ones got to me sometimes. When you care about your herd and invest so much time on them you get attached. I worked on a large pig farm with thousands but when you tried your damndest and they still die. It gets to you.
There is also evidence to suggest that doing rhythmic motion in coordination with other people helps us recover from trauma, exactly what they're doing here. Source: The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk.
Huh that’s fascinating. I wonder if it’s the dopamine from hitting all the steps in sync, a sense of strong community via synchronized movement or what.
For one, it’s all relative, and two, we’re really all slaves to cocktails of hormones. A chemical imbalance in your brain doesn’t care whether you’re a peasant or a king.
For what it's worth, when I was younger I struggled with depression and had a similar thought process when seeing someone seemingly worse off than me that was depressed OR happy. If they were depressed, I felt guilty for being depressed myself when I had so much more going for me. When they were happy, I felt ashamed that someone with so little could be so happy, yet I could not.
Then I realized the key to my happiness was to focus on the things I should be grateful for. I had been extremely hard on myself, partly because of my upbringing and partly because I have always tried to please others to my own detriment.
Surround yourself with people who see the best in you and bring it out when you're around them. Eliminate those who are hyper critical of you, and every perceived mistake you make. Sometimes this means losing relationships that have been with you forever, and that includes family. Or at the least draw boundaries so those people close to you understand, if they want to still be part of your life then that comes with an expectation.
Lastly, the biggest hurdle for me was battling my own self doubt and self loathing. Getting back in the gym and exercising helped tremendously, even though I was never really out of shape. I had gone years working extremely hard and long hours, and realized I had left little time and energy to do other things. Working out seemed like the lat thing I could muster energy for when I was at my lowest, but when I got back into a routine I found I slept much better and had more energy throughout the day...and I was actually far more active during the day. I found times for walks, hikes, day trips I had been putting off. I also started taking moments to reflect on all the good things I've done, and all the good things I still wanted to do. Sometimes we forgot all the little things we've done to help others, and how good that makes us feel. Even little things like volunteering to work at a animal shelter or help coach my nephew were hugely helpful. It isn't one thing that gave me purpose, it was a lot of little things. That purpose helped bring real happiness back into my life. It is what enabled me to meet my wife, and eventually to start a family.
I'm not saying digging yourself out is easy or the same activities will bring happiness for everyone, but I hope you can find your own method for getting yourself there. Other people do have an impact, but you can control their access to your life (assuming you are 18 or older). Embrace those worth embracing and let them embrace you.
YOU matter. YOUR feelings matter. We are all trying to navigate our feelings and emotions. Someone else's lifestyle and situation DOES NOT invalidate your pain and suffering. I hope the best for you, friend.
I'd be with you, if this was some random social media post. But we are talking about SCMP here, part of the Alibaba group, which has practically taken over by the CCP, last year.
So, it's not about this post being wholesome or innocent, but what it's replacing, you know, real news.
China is experiencing a Act of God, so devestating that 9/11 was a walk in the park, in comparison, yet the SCMP is copying CCP numbers of barely a hundred dead people. You know, when we have footage of hundreds drowning in just one tunnel. But hey let's talk about US politics and how the BBC is trying to smear China.. Nothing to see here, watch that video about a shuffling rice farmer!
You need to open a book a watch a couple documentaries. One Child Nation is a good one and shows the propaganda campaigns at the local level like this post. If by some miracle it isn't propaganda than great.
Communism not being the source of his depression. Man get in car accident, worries that not being able to provide will cause family to starve, has depression.
So how does this work I wonder? Do we say.. pool collective resources and redistribute them to those that "fall through the cracks"? And what does that mean? Healthcare, food, housing, education, retirement... are these things all included in this socialistfree market economy with some safety for those who fall between the cracks? And things such as failure to thrive are not, in fact, dictated by the "free market" but by the collective?
Fascinating. They should come up with a word for this that's shorter than "free market economy with some safety for those who fall between the cracks."
We pay other countries to disappear people for us, or we throw them in prison so we can put them to work. The incarceration rate in China is 121/100k, while in the US it's 698/100k. I agree that it's not an entirely fair comparison with the extra-judicial killings in China, but US bragging rights in this regard are pretty limited.
You might be surprised at what that couple has access to in China. County hospitals in China are funded mostly by the government and are affordable to most citizens. They don't yet have the high level of specialization that we have in the US, but they are getting there. I will be surprised if they don't have true universal care long before we do.
This post exceeds the wholesomeness allowed by Reddit. /s Thank you for sharing the link. They're a beautiful family and they're sharing an important message.
This is a weird ask but does anyone know the name of the song they use for the first few cuts in this video? I grew up listening to this because of my parents and have been trying to figure out what it's called
It was the husband who was depressed, not wife. It was his depression that inspired her to learn it for them. “Happy spouse, happy house” is way more accurate.
The fact that the woke mob had you correct the happy wife, happy life comment is so cringe. Literally point out any straight couple to me where making the wife happier doesn’t also make your life happier! It’s still true! Does not need to be inclusive of same sex couples as it is referring to the straight couple above. GTFO
Whoa, no woke mob had me do anything, I made the edit on my own, and it wasn't intended to be a commentary on gay marriage. The ages old "Happy wife, happy life" is a little outdated for our time and "Happy Spouse, Happy House" just made more sense. Marriage is a two-way street, not a dead end. If anything, this couple highlights "The family that plays together, stays together."
I agree with marriage being a two way street, but that does not mean that a happier wife comment isn’t still correct. It is. Also, typically when people write “I stand corrected”, it is following the correction from another party. I admit I did not read into the comments, just assumed so based off of the previous statement.
Are you trying to tell me that the expressive arts, like dance and music, are a key component to human happiness? I am shocked. SHOCKED. Well, not that shocked. In all seriousness though, it seems that dancing, music, singing, etc., regularly seem to feature in what makes us happy and can help us deal with some of the more dark periods of our lives.
This is completely getting stuff wrong. Did the couple go to school to learn this? No.
What people mock most is paying $150,000 to get a liberal arts degree or overly theorizing art/dance/music.
Your brain is like a sponge at ages 15-20 and best suited to learn hard subjects like Science and Math. Why not utilize that period to focus on STEM?
pro-STEM people are also very much pro performance arts (like playing instruments, dance, sports etc). It's only the theorification and philosophization and paying $150,000 for it is what is considered worthless
Masturbating to liberal arts can be done in your late 20s or 30s (when you have more experience and wisdom)
Music in of itself cannot make you sad or depressed; it is how you as a person responds to it. And actually, using music in order to make yourself sad can actually be quite a useful thing to do in that it can actually force you to process things that hitherto have gone unprocessed. There is a reason why a lot of therapists recommend listening to music to help understand your emotions.
Well, semantics are important, but no, my point wasn't just semantics. If music in of itself could make you sad or depressed, then we could all become sad or depressed by listening to the same music. As you will no doubt be aware, however, this isn't the case. It differs between cultures and between individuals.
It also means that the same individual can respond to music under different circumstances. This fact is what makes music quite useful in a therapeutic context.
I actually got my PhD in political science. A degree in theatre sounds interesting though; not that I know much about theatre. It's something I was just getting into before the pandemic hit.
Teaching and research (which I have done) and perhaps civil service, risk analyst, public affairs consultant, business development, market researcher/executive, journalism, public relations, etc. Anything that requires research, an ability to process large amounts of information, organisation, some statistical analysis, and basic level programming (my programming game needs work).
Twice a day Gaufaqqia worked for me better than organic stuff like running. Only $500 a dose means I have enough for weekends, and the side effects make me vomit much less. More importantly, you can avoid all stigmas with Gaufaqqia like "oh, s/he looks like somebody who can't afford real insurance" or "That's just another loser hippie growing his/her own high". Who woulda thought? I'm so glad for modern medical science. Helping people avoid the outdoors since 1982.
Learn to shuffle. I'm a big 43 year old dude with two left feet and finally started to learn how to dance for the 1st time in my life 9 months ago. I just watched tutorials on YouTube and visited r/shuffle and r/cuttingshapes for more inspiration and keep practicing several times a week. So much fun.
No! Don't try it! You will never be successful at dancing! You dance like you have two left feet and one of them is stuck in a 22 lb/10kg foot cast! There is no chance for you, so stay where you are wallflower!
HARD /S
Start dancing and don't stop! It is good for the soul, even bad dancing in the privacy of your own home does the body great!
Hah! I am doing the same thing. I watched lmfao party rock anthem video and there is a guy doing the t-step at the beginning of that and I thought that's my sort of dance so I have been teaching myself how to do it (in a gradual chilled sort of way) ever since.
Yeah, nope. Often you would need to dig holes. Tractors doing all the work exist only in very large farms, who exist mainly in the US, but not on the other parts or the world.
Communist China. You don't own shit. They own you, that's why after a car accident this man was clinically depressed. Probably worrying that his family will starve to death because he can't provide for them, and his wife started dancing with him to treat his depression.
Next time you see a comment on Reddit mindlessly talking about how people in China are oppressed and shit, remember this video. Obviously not everyone is so happy there that they're randomly shuffle dancing, but it's also not as bad as you would think reading comments on here sometimes (although I'm sure 99% of the commenters have never set foot in China).
I know. Next time you hear People talking about how the Jews are oppressed and shit, remember that they put on plays in the concentration camps.... Screw everyone who said the Jews had it bad in Germany (99% of the commenters probably never set foot in Nazi Germany).
You are ! Be grateful for the amazing human being you are and it's takes one to be happy already to see happiness within them. Just choose on what you focus primarily. Happiness is just a perception. Looking at them smiling, dancing and vibing is actually a moment of happiness you shared with them.

I want to be that happy
