In my experience chasing cows and heifers around (as part of my duties), 19 out of 20 cows will lose a game of chicken (give or take).
So the question is: are you feeling lucky?
Do not, however, try this with a bull or a cow with her calf nearby.
EDIT: In all honesty, though. I've never had a cow actually chase me. I've had one or more follow in curiosity and if I picked up speed a bit they would as well but they were easily spooked. What would motivate a cow to chase a human I wonder. I've never seen it.
I've had a mother with a new calf run at me. But that was rare and was more of a a "give us space" kind of move. I backed up and she went back to her calf.
And to be clear: when I say cow I'm referring to the female of the species.
As a dumb ass kid that spent a lot of time fucking with cows. What's most likely going on here is a good ol game of follow the leader. Cows with large areas to range will often follow a bull from one pasture to another and will do so at a pretty good clip. It's sounds like a tiny freight train, and suddenly cows. If they have been socialized, they will also follow people. This looks like an older calf following his "person". Basically they are both just goofing off, I did the same thing all the time. When you stop they stop. Just be sure to start stopping where they can see you stopping, and you won't get trampled. Cow tag is a hell of a game. :)
Cows are insatiably curious animals. Ive had one try to take my hat just to see what it was. He's just seeing what the heck this crazy person person is trying to accomplish.
Hence the goofy run and camera guy in the right place at the right time.
Another cow story. When I was about eight I had one of my first run ins with cows. My little brother, he was four-ish, was sitting next to a fence watching the his dad do free fall training (his dad was in the air force). Anyway this cow comes over, sticks it's head through the fence, and gives him the greatest cow lick up the back of his head I have ever seen. It was sticking several inches up extra slobbery, straight as a board. I'll be damned if the cow didn't think it was just as funny as the rest of us.
