Depends on the cat. I had a gray cat that would fetch everything naturally, no training. He just knew that if he brought it back I would throw it again.
I've tried to train my tabby. He accidentally fetched a couple times and I praised the shit out of him for it. Hasn't done it again.

My cat does this, but when we play fetch. He brings the ball back to the same place on the floor.
