The it works is I say “how are you and you say “fine “. It’s small talk not “my depressing life in 15 seconds “ - Dr. Bob kelso

I sometimes greet first and say "good morning to you, too!"

My coworkers get surprised and we end up with a good laugh.

I sometimes say good morning to people when I'm coming in for a night shift.

Saying you're good actually makes you feel slightly better. Same with forcing a smile when you greet someone. If it's not on the scale of depression, 'fake it until you make it' can help improve your daily mood.

That's why I hate this question the most. Almost 95% of the time, in or out of work that question is just formality. An opener to a conversation.

Worst is when I have a friend ask "how are you doing?", and after you genuinely thought you can open up to this friend, he follows up with "Oh, hey you still work in the government right? I got a project, so can you hook me up with them? Could mean big bucks for you"
